Newtownards, is a large town, townland and civil parish in County Down, Northern Ireland. Newtownards lies at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough, 10 miles east of Belfast, on the Ards Peninsula. Newtownards is situated in the civil parish of Newtownards and the historic baronies of Ards Lower and Castlereagh Lower. Newtownards is the largest town in the former Borough of Ards. It is known colloquially by locals as Ards.
The town of Newtownards is overlooked by the 100-foot (30 m) high Scrabo Tower. The tower is 41 metres high, and was erected as a memorial to Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, in recognition of his concern for the plight of his tenants during the great potato famine. It is open to the public and houses a historical and local environment exhibition. The basalt topped sandstone hill at Scrabo is one of the dominant features of north Down. The tower now stands tall in Scrabo Country Park with its woodland walks and parkland through Killynether Wood.
The Somme Heritage Centre, which is situated a little north of the town, is the Somme Association's flagship project. Situated adjacent to the Clandeboye Estate outside Newtownards, the centre is a unique visitor attraction of international significance showing the reality of the Great War and its effects on the community at home. The centre commemorates the involvement of the 36th (Ulster) and 16th (Irish) divisions in the Battle of the Somme, the 10th (Irish) Division in Gallipoli, Salonika and Palestine and provides displays and information on the entire Irish contribution to the First World War.
The centre promotes cross-community contact, mutual understanding, an appreciation of cultural diversity, and is a major visitor attraction. The centre is built on ground provided by Ards Borough Council in what is to be the Whitespots Country Park. It is linked to Helen's Tower on the Clandeboye Estate via the Ulster Way. Historically, the 36th (Ulster) Division trained on the estate during the first few months of the war and German prisoners of war were interned there. A replica of Helen's Tower was built on the Somme battlefield as Northern Ireland's national war memorial.
On the east shore of Strangford Lough, a few miles outside Newtownards and near Greyabbey, stands Mount Stewart, an 18th-century house and garden – the home of the Londonderry family. The house and its contents reflect the history of the Londonderrys who played a leading role in British social and political life. The ninety-eight acre garden at Mount Stewart has been proposed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Largely created by Edith, Lady Londonderry, wife of the 7th Marquess, in the 1920s, it has an unrivalled collection of rare and unusual plants.

Castle Gardens Lisburn; A Refreshing Walk in the Garden
If visiting Lisburn City - the Castle Gardens is a nice place for a walk - one of the best things to do in Lisburn - perfect for a family or just to chill for a little while. There are a few other nice places to check out in Lisburn as well - do check out some of our links below.
Lisburn is known to be the third largest city in all of Northern Ireland and this brings us to the point of visiting and exploring its streets and some of the most important touristic attractions which one should head for once being in the city. One of those most visited places and which happens to be the most important is the Castle Gardens in Lisburn.
Lisburn Castle Gardens is the ideal place for those who want to have a relaxing and refreshing walk by nature or even those who just want to sit in a place steeped in history and bring their minds to rest for some time. There are some statues located in the garden that would immediately link you to the history of the place and will bring you to know more about it all.
Actually, Lisburn Castle Gardens is the most historically significant open space in Lisburn and it was also the place where Lisburn Castle was once situated; a 17th century manor house that was once built by the Conway family, the landlords of Lisburn. This garden was not a public place until the death of the last landlord of Lisburn, Sir Richard Wallace, and his wife, Lady Wallace, that their heir Sir Murray Scott gifted it to the people of Lisburn in 1903. The Manor House was actually destroyed during the great fire that took place in Lisburn in 1707.
The upper section of the garden dates back to the Victorian times and it actually carries many historical significant features that include the 1677 red sandstone gateway, the Wallace drinking fountain, and a memorable erected in 1891 that honors Lisburn's landlord Sir Richard Wallace.
There were some archaeological excavations that took place in Lisburn Castle Gardens during its renovation times and at this point there were different 17th century artifacts discovered that include a double flight staircase and a gazebo; some of these different artifacts are now placed and found in Lisburn Museum which is located in Lisburn city centre.
What you are going to see in Lisburn Castle Gardens is not the same as the old one which used to be found back in the 17th century of course, there are different renovations done to the place
by Lisburn city council that was even supported by Grant Aid from The Heritage Lottery Fund in 2008.
It always feels different to visit a garden that dates to years and years back and takes its part in the history of the whole city, but in addition to the history of the place, it is also considered important to enjoy the place as being one green area that you could walk through, sit in, and have some kind of refreshed air away from all the tension that you might be passing by in your daily life.
Lisbrun city is not far away from Belfast, so it won't be hard to go and visit it if you have some spare time which you are willing to spend somewhere else - it is only 8 miles southwest of Belfast - and there are actually different things to visit there in addition to walking down the streets of the city.
While exploring Lisburn Castle Gardens, we also had the chance to visit the famous Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum which would take you through the linen industry of the city and it also offers some workshops and free tours ( there is also the famous Christ Church Cathedral which was named St. Thomas Church before and which is also important when it comes to this city ( the Island Arts Centre is another place and option to consider ( and finally there's the famous Giant's Ring (
We have been to Lisburn before several times and in every single one of them we managed to explore something new about this beautiful city. We have been through a walk before that included passing by those different locations and we actually fell in love with it all; exploring the streets, passing by all these shops and boutiques, and at the same time knowing that one of Northern Ireland's biggest shopping destinations, the Bow Street Mall, is actually located in Lisburn and it has more than 70 shops (
If you are looking forward to explore a new city other than Belfast, you could head to Lisburn for being close, for once being part of the Belfast Metropolitan Area, and also for being situated on River Lagan forming the boundary between county Antrim and county Down.

Belfast (UK: /ˈbɛlfɑːst/ BEL-fahst, elsewhere /ˈbɛlfæst/; from Irish: Béal Feirste [bʲeːlˠ ˈfʲɛɾˠ(ə)ʃtʲə], meaning 'mouth of the sand-bank ford') is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, standing on the banks of the River Lagan on the east coast. It is the 12th-largest city in the United Kingdom and the second-largest on the island of Ireland. It had a population of 343,542 in 2019. Belfast suffered greatly during the violence that accompanied the partition of Ireland, and especially during the more recent conflict known as the Troubles.
By the early 19th century, Belfast was a major port. It played an important role in the Industrial Revolution in Ireland, becoming briefly the biggest linen-producer in the world, earning it the nickname Linenopolis. By the time it was granted city status in 1888, it was a major centre of Irish linen production, tobacco-processing and rope-making. Shipbuilding was also a key industry; the Harland and Wolff shipyard, which built the RMS Titanic, was the world's largest shipyard. Belfast as of 2019 has a major aerospace and missiles industry. Industrialisation, and the inward migration[8] it brought, made Belfast Northern Ireland's biggest city. Following the partition of Ireland in 1921, Belfast became the seat of government for Northern Ireland. Belfast's status as a global industrial centre ended in the decades after the Second World War.
Belfast is still a port with commercial and industrial docks, including the Harland and Wolff shipyard, dominating the Belfast Lough shoreline. It is served by two airports: George Best Belfast City Airport, 3 miles (5 kilometres) from the city centre, and Belfast International Airport 15 miles (24 kilometres) west of the city. The Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) listed Belfast as a Gamma + global city in 2020.The townlands of Belfast are its oldest surviving land divisions and most pre-date the city. Belfast expanded very rapidly from being a market town to becoming an industrial city during the course of the 19th century. Because of this, it is less an agglomeration of villages and towns which have expanded into each other, than other comparable cities, such as Manchester or Birmingham. The city expanded to the natural barrier of the hills that surround it, overwhelming other settlements. Consequently, the arterial roads along which this expansion took place (such as the Falls Road or the Newtownards Road) are more significant in defining the districts of the city than nucleated settlements. Parts of Belfast are segregated by walls, commonly known as peace lines, erected by the British Army after August 1969, and which still divide 14 districts in the inner city. In 2008 a process was proposed for the removal of the 'peace walls'. In June 2007, a £16 million programme was announced which will transform and redevelop streets and public spaces in the city centre. Major arterial roads (quality bus corridor) into the city include the Antrim Road, Shore Road, Holywood Road, Newtownards Road, Castlereagh Road, Cregagh Road, Ormeau Road, Malone Road, Lisburn Road, Falls Road, Springfield Road, Shankill Road, and Crumlin Road, Four Winds.[95]

Belfast city centre is divided into two postcode districts, BT1 for the area lying north of the City Hall, and BT2 for the area to its south. The industrial estate and docklands BT3. The rest of the Belfast post town is divided in a broadly clockwise system from BT3 in the north-east round to BT15, with BT16 and BT17 further out to the east and west respectively. Although BT derives from Belfast, the BT postcode area extends across the whole of Northern Ireland.
Since 2001, boosted by increasing numbers of tourists, the city council has developed a number of cultural quarters. The Cathedral Quarter takes its name from St Anne's Cathedral (Church of Ireland) and has taken on the mantle of the city's key cultural locality. It hosts a yearly visual and performing arts festival.
Custom House Square is one of the city's main outdoor venues for free concerts and street entertainment. The Gaeltacht Quarter is an area around the Falls Road in west Belfast which promotes and encourages the use of the Irish language. The Queen's Quarter in south Belfast is named after Queen's University. The area has a large student population and hosts the annual Belfast International Arts Festival each autumn. It is home to Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum, which was reopened in 2009 after major redevelopment.[99] The Golden Mile is the name given to the mile between Belfast City Hall and Queen's University. Taking in Dublin Road, Great Victoria Street, Shaftesbury Square and Bradbury Place, it contains some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. Since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, the nearby Lisburn Road has developed into the city's most exclusive shopping strip. Finally, the Titanic Quarter covers 0.75 km2 (185 acres)

Aunt Sandra's Candy Factory Castlereagh Rd Belfast
I'm down on the Castlereagh Road in East Belfast to visit the unique and famous Aunt Sandra's Candy Factory.
I have passed this traditional sweet shop many many times but never ventured in. I found it an amazing place. I didn't realize there was so much in it!
Here we have traditional sweets of all types from our past made on the premises! All sorts of flavoured hard boiled sweets, liquorice, honeycomb, chocolate. Many are becoming very difficult to find to buy and those on sale from the big outlets simply don't taste how we remember them, because they are mass produced.
Remarkably all sweets at Jim's Candy Factory are home made and hand made, using tradiitional recipes and traditional methods.
As well as selling sweets there are regular displays of sweet making and then there are birthday parties where folks are encouraged to take part in the sweet making process. Jim even has a travelling roadshow for those folks who live further afield.
Come and see it for yourself! I guarrantee you will not leave empty handed. lol
