The island of Santiago was discovered by Diogo Gomes, a Portuguese, in 1460. Gomes settled at Ribeira Grande with his family members and Portuguese from Algarve and Alentejo in 1462. The settling conditions were good due to the abundance of water from the river Ribeira Grande, which gave it an advantage over the other settlement on Santiago, Alcatrazes. The settlement became a key port of call for Portuguese colonization towards Africa and South America. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was a centre of maritime trade between Africa, the Cape, Brazil and the Caribbean. Due to its proximity to the African coast, it was an essential platform for the trade of enslaved persons.
Cidade Velha's port was a stopping place for two great navigators: Vasco da Gama, in 1497, on his way to India, and Christopher Columbus, in 1498, while on his third voyage to the Americas. In 1522, it was the stopping place for the later explorer Ferdinand Magellan who served under Spain on his way to circumnavigate the world.
Cidade Velha has the oldest colonial church in the world - Nossa Senhora do Rosário church, which was constructed in 1495. In 1533, Cidade Velha became the seat of the new Roman Catholic Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde, created by papal bull of Pope Clement VII. Currently, the seat is in Praia.
The riches of Ribeira Grande and conflicts between Portugal and rival colonial powers France and Britain attracted pirate attacks, including those by Francis Drake (1585) and Jacques Cassard (1712). Despite the construction of Forte Real de São Filipe in 1587–93, Ribeira Grande remained vulnerable and went into decline. The capital was moved to Praia in 1770.
Ribeira Grande (now Cidade Velha) was reduced to the rank of a village and its civil, religious and military buildings went in decay. Since the 1960s, restoration works have begun. In 2009, it became a UNESCO's World Heritage site.
As of 2010, it has a population of over 1,200.

Its population was 570 at the 2010 census. It is located 7 km north of the city center of Praia. 3.5 km to the east is the Bay of São Francisco, and 2.5 km to the northeast is the village of Vale da Custa, which is part of the municipality of São Domingos.

Cape Verde is a country in West Africa. It comprises a group of islands of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. It is part of the region of Islands collectively known as Macaronesia. Cape Verde has won a positive reputation in promoting what is considered the most stable democracy in Africa, a standard of living higher than most African nations, and one of the most politically liberal nations on the continent, and in the world.
Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes. São Vicente is home to the cultural capital of the islands, Mindelo, which throbs with bars and music clubs. On Sal and Maio, undulating windswept dunes merge with indigo-blue seas on unspoilt beaches of powdery white sand. Meanwhile, far-flung Fogo and Brava in the southwest offer their own enchantments, from surreal volcanic landscapes, to sparkling bays framed by towering peaks. Throw in the constant beat of music that Cabo Verde is famed for and the renowned morabeza (Creole for hospitality) of its people and you’ll see why many have come – and never left.
Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September. Some islands see almost no rain, these are Sal, Boa Vista and Maio; these are arid. The islands with the most rain fall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao, but are nonetheless semi-arid.
Cape Verde is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets. The main islands are :
Santo Antão
Great hiking.
São Vicente
With the cultural capital of Mindelo.
Santa Luzia
Santa Luzia is uninhabited but can be visited as a day trip from São Vicente.
São Nicolau
Rural mountainous island based on agriculture. A quiet and relaxed get away.
Sal
Has great beaches, water sports and resorts aplenty.
Boa Vista
Even nicer beaches. Great scuba diving
Maio
Even more nice beaches.
Santiago Island
The first island settled in Cape Verde. It holds the current capital Praia, the original capital Cidade Velha, and the bulk of the nation's population.
Fogo
A spectacular volcano island which erupted as recently as November 2014.
Brava
A small island only accessible by boat and is a great place to get away from it all.
There are plenty of hotels and guest houses throughout the archipelago. Though the largest hotels are based on the islands of Sal (Riu Funana and Garopa hotels--1000 rooms combined), and Boa Vista (Riu Touareg--881 rooms). Cape Verde has fantastic fresh seafood. Tuna is common, as is Wahoo - a white fleshed fish with similar texture.
There are ferry services between the islands. Depending on the distance between the islands you are going from and to, flying can be significantly shorter but also significantly more expensive.

???????? Plateau is the historic center of the capital of Praia, on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It receives its name (from the French “plateau”) for being located in a plateau overlooking the port of Praia. Its average elevation is 37 meters above sea level. [1] Plateau's population was 1,019 at the 2010 census. Many public buildings are located in the Plateau, including the Presidential Palace, the cathedral, the City Hall and the Ethnographic Museum.
Praia was founded as a small village near the natural harbor in the early 16th century. Due to its strategic position on a plateau, it was easily defended against pirate attacks, which gave it a great advantage over the old city of Ribeira Grande (Cidade Velha). It gradually replaced Cidade Velha to become the most important settlement in Cape Verde, and became the seat of the colonial government in 1770. In the course of the 19th century, the Plateau was completely rebuilt with streets according to a square plan, aligned with large colonial buildings and mansions. Since 2016, the historic center of Praia has been on the provisional list of World Heritage sites.

Sua elevação média é de 37 metros acima do nível do mar. [1] A população de Plateau era 1.019 no censo de 2010. Muitos edifícios públicos estão situados no Plateau, nomeadamente o Palácio Presidencial, a catedral, a Câmara Municipal e o Museu Etnográfico.
Praia foi fundada como uma pequena aldeia perto do porto natural no início do século XVI. Devido à sua posição estratégica num planalto era facilmente defendida contra ataques piratas, o que lhe conferia uma grande vantagem sobre a antiga cidade da Ribeira Grande (Cidade Velha). Gradualmente substituiu a Cidade Velha para se tornar o assentamento mais importante de Cabo Verde, e tornou-se a sede do governo colonial em 1770. No decorrer do século 19, o Planalto foi completamente reconstruído com ruas de acordo com uma planta quadrada, alinhada com grandes edifícios coloniais e mansões. Desde 2016, o centro histórico da Praia está na lista provisória de sítios do Patrimônio Mundial.

A ilha foi descoberta em 1460 pelo o Portugues, Diogo Gomes. Foi povoada pela primeira vez no final do século XVI, quando a terra era utilizada para a criação de gado, especialmente cabras. O sal foi explorado pela primeira vez no século XVII, o que fez com que a população crescesse.
Vila do Maio (AKA Porto Inglês) é uma cidade na parte sudoeste da ilha do Maio, no sudeste de Cabo Verde. É o principal aglomerado urbano da ilha, sendo também sede do Concelho do Maio. A sua população era de 2.971 habitantes em 2010. O nome Porto Inglês refere-se aos navios ingleses que exportavam desta vila o sal produzido na ilha do Maio. A exploração do sal continuou até o século XIX. A inconclusiva Batalha do Maio foi travada entre esquadrões de fragatas britânicas e francesas perto da cidade em 23 de janeiro de 1814, nos últimos estágios das Guerras Napoleônicas.
O porto de Porto Inglês tem serviços de ferry para a Praia na ilha de Santiago. O aeroporto doméstico do Maio fica a 1 km a norte da cidade.

The island was discovered in 1460 by the Portuguese, Diogo Gomes. It was first settled at the end of the 16th century, when the land was used to raise livestock, especially goats. Salt was first exploited in the 17th century which caused the population to grow.
Vila do Maio (AKA Porto Inglês) is a city in the southwestern part of the island of Maio in southeastern Cape Verde. It is the main urban settlement of the island, and also seat of the Maio Municipality. Its population was 2,971 in 2010. The name Porto Inglês refers to English ships that exported salt produced on the island of Maio from this town. Salt exploitation continued until the 19th century. The inconclusive Battle of Maio was fought between British and French frigate squadrons close to the town on 23 January 1814 in the last stages of the Napoleonic Wars.
The port of Porto Inglês has ferry services to Praia on the island of Santiago. The domestic Maio Airport lies 1 km north of the city.

We will focus on the project Xalabas, created through a partnership between the ONG Africa 70 and Pilorinhu Association. It aims to contribute to a greater integration of the community in the development of sustainable tourism by expanding and diversifying the tourism offer, through urban art workshops, urban remapping and any other activities.
