In this episode, we decided to visit the Cat Ba island since I have already done Ha long bay in 2014 and didn't feel like visiting again, I thought Cat Ba would be nice. But unfortunately, Cat Ba had really bad vibes and we had to cut the trip short and decided to go back to Hanoi.
I visited Phu Quoc island in 2019 and didn't like the island as much as I love the mainland. Vietnamese islands aren't as great as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia or even Cambodia IMO.

We spent 4 days on Cat Ba island, where we were exploring different caves, beautiful beaches, the National Park and also took a boat tour through Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, which was absolutely stunning.
You will see, that a trip to Halong bay does not have to be expensive. We will share our tips, on how to do Halong Bay on a budget.
Overall, we were super surprised by the beauty of Cat Ba Island and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting Vietnam.

If you had told me a year ago that we were going to sell all of our stuff to start backpacking the world, I would have called you a liar. We moved in with our parents, sold everything we own including our cars, and paid off $70,000 worth of debt. We worked 70hrs/week over the last year trying to save up $15,000 to make our dreams come true. Now, we are travel journalists who showcase the beauty in different cultures and inspire others to chase their dreams through our YouTube Channel and website Chase for Adventure. We want to show others that if they want something bad enough, they’ll figure out how to get it; show people who are struggling that they can make the light at the end of their tunnel. CAT BA ISLAND | Budget Friendly way to See Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Hello friends! One of the top tourist destinations in Northern Vietnam is Ha Long Bay made famous by its stunning limestone mountains and beautiful waters. If you are traveling on a budget like so many of us do, the best way to see Ha Long Bay is by first going the lesser known~ Cat Ba Island~ from here you can see the beautiful scenery for just $20 for a full day boat tour. Whereas many tours from Hanoi are upwards of $100+
In the video I forgot to mention the bus + ferry is both ways! so after your boat tour of the bay, they will pick you up from your accommodation and take you back to Hanoi. Definitely worth $8 :)

Welcome to the travel diaries, episode 2: my Vietnam Vlog! In this video I vlog my 3 day trip to Cat Ba Island, Ha Long Bay!

The BEST PLACE for a BUDGET HA LONG BAY BOAT TOUR! Cat Ba, Vietnam
The best place for the cheapest budget friendly Ha Long Bay cruise boat tour! Cat Ba Island, Vietnam.
Our final stop before arriving in Hanoi was Cat Ba Island, the largest island of Ha Long Bay in North East Vietnam. We had been told by many people that this was the best place to go for a budget friendly boat tour of Ha Long Bay without the crowds of tourists.. so as usual we took the advice!
We decided to stay in Woodstock, a relaxing hippy style hostel next to the beach as it offered boat tours directly and the beach was on our front doorstep. The tour from the hostel cost an acceptable $20 and lasted the whole day! We were picked up at 8am from the hostel and taken to our boat for the day.
For the first part of the tour we briefly passed through a fishing village before going through Lan Ha Bay which surrounded us with the incredible limestone islets and fishing boats. It was like being on another planet, just a shame the weather wasn't complimenting the views.
Next up was a visit to a fish farm to learn about how they grow fish, followed by some kayaking through the caves, but unfortunately the weather had other ideas so we had to take shelter for over an hour. Once the rain had stopped we spent around an hour kayaking through low hanging caves and getting up close the the gigantic limestone cliffs, it really was magical.
The next stop was a secluded beach where we could swim and snorkel. Me and Louis recently got new tattoos in Saigon so instead of risking an infection from swimming a I took this oppurtunity to see Ha Long Bay from the sky. I don't regret this decision because it looked even more amazing from the sky!
Finally we briefly passed through a fishing village again before heading back to the hostel at 5pm. We had planned to catch one last sunset but unfortunately the weather wasn't playing along, however I took the drone up anyway for one final flight in Cat Ba.
