What are the worst seaside resorts in the UK? Anyone leaving home to spend some time at a resort is going with high expectations. There are tons of things to do at seaside resorts. However, it’s not all seaside resorts that live up to their designation. Some of them could be better described as anything else but resorts. Some of these pseudo-seaside resorts are there in the UK. We hereby present to you the 10 worst seaside resorts in the UK.
After considering each of them, the choice is yours to patronize them or steer clear of them. These seaside resorts in the UK were rated based on several features that are expected in seaside resorts and they were weighted over 100 points. The following are the scores.
10. Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England
Burnham-on-Sea is a seaside town located in Somerset, England. You would be fair to this place at the mouth of the Parrett River, upon Bridgwater Bay, if you reckon with it as a fishing village or town, for the sake of respect, that it used to be until the late 1700s when it began to grow.
While the park at Burnham-on-Sea was lovely with clean facilities and lots of activities, the resort could not score more than 48 points. The onsite pizza costs too much; you need a 10-minute walk to get a better deal. Most of the accommodation here is caravans without heating in the bedrooms. The bedding quality of the rooms is begging to be upgraded.
9. Colwyn Bay, Conwy, Wales
Colwyn Bay, a town and community in Conwy County Borough cannot escape our attention. Conwy is on the north coast of Wales where it is overlooking the Irish Sea. The town of Colwyn Bay is recognized as a seaside resort within the historic county of Denbighshire, no doubt. But what is in doubt is the quality of the resort. From what we know Colwyn Bay can’t earn more than 58 points.
Yes, the clean rooms, the security, and proximity to the North Wales Expressway, the railway station, and the beach count for something. However, the services were generally poor. The rooms are freezing without a heater and electrical fittings including plumbing were not being maintained. The food options were zero.
8. Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
Then next is Great Yarmouth. Joining them in removing the prefix “great,” let’s comfortably join in referring to it by just Yarmouth which is more fitting than Great Yarmouth. In any case, it is recognized as a seaside resort town in Norfolk, there in England. Straddling the River Yare, it is located 30 kilometers east of Norwich.
As a seaside resort, Yarmouth ties with its more neighborly Burnham-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay in Wales to score 58. Though it has sandy beaches and two historic piers, amusement rides, and restaurants, Yarmouth as Norfolk’s flagship beach town is always crammed. Holidaymakers during the summertime suffer disorderliness here as if there are more services than the management could handle in an organized manner.
7. Morecambe, Lancashire, England
Morecambe is a town in the City of Lancaster in Lancashire, England. It’s hard to understand why Morecambe is still being referred to as a seaside resort. Up until the mid-20th century, it was a thriving seaside resort. Then it was home to the country’s largest Pontins resort.

The ranking is based on a survey of over 4,000 people. Almost 100 seaside towns and villages were ranked based on the quality of service and seaside facilities. The result is what you’re about to enjoy now. Here’s the list of the 10 least seaside destinations in the UK.

10. Skegness, Lincolnshire, England
On the Lincolnshire coast of the North Sea, you will find the town of Skegness 69 kilometers to Lincoln and 35 kilometers northeast of Boston. We are starting with this seaside town and a civil parish in the East Lindsey District of Lincolnshire. Skegness once ranked as the worst seaside resort in the UK. It, therefore, should come as no surprise if it is found on this list of the 10 least popular seaside destinations.
Weighted over 100, it averages only 48. If you need proof of this, here is it: In an ONS study of 57 English seaside resorts not long ago, Skegness proved to be the most deprived seaside town. For example, 61.5 percent of their statistical areas (LSOAs) were in the country’s most deprived quintile.
9. Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, England
In Somerset is where you will find the town of Weston-Super-Mare which is among the least popular seaside locations in the UK. This town, also known as Weston, is in North Somerset, England lying by the Bristol Channel, 32 kilometers southwest of Bristol.
The popularity of Weston as a seaside holiday destination has suffered a decline in recent times because of the advent of cheap foreign holidays. The demise of the traditional works holidays usually declared for and by heavy and manufacturing industries is also a big blow. In a nutshell, Weston is rated among the least mainly due to economic reasons.
8. Ilfracombe, Devon, England
In the eighth position of the least popular seaside destinations in the UK is Ilfracombe, also tagged as a seaside resort on the North Devon coast of England. The unpopularity of this civil parish with a small harbor surrounded by cliffs actually is usually from within. In the last few years, the confidence in the authorities of the town has waned.
People in the street in Ilfracombe no longer expect a better future. This is terribly affecting the quality of services and disposition of the hospitality workers in the town. If you receive a kind of unwelcoming or uncomplimentary treatment, please note that this is due to no other thing but the general atmosphere of the town.

Visit Burnham-on-Crouch
Called often the Cowes of the East Burnham-on-Crouch has a distinctly nautical atmosphere. Historically it has benefitted from its location on the coast, first as a ferry port, later as a fishing port known for its oyster beds, and most recently as a centre for yachting and arts. The town retains an air of friendly, laid-back relaxation, seemingly unscarred by the frenetic way of todays' life. Burnham is a favourite haunt for day-trippers and although many people visit the town because of the quaint streets and historic buildings, its museum, excellent riverside and parkland walks and the wide choice of eating places and pubs, undoubtedly the majority visit because of the sailing.

Burnham-on-Sea is a town in Somerset, England, at the mouth of the River Parrett and Bridgwater Bay. Burnham was a small fishing village until the late 18th century, when it began to grow because of its popularity as a seaside resort.
It forms part of the parish of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge and shares a town council with its neighbouring market town of Highbridge. The position of the town on the edge of the Somerset Levels and moors where they meet the Bristol Channel, has resulted in a history dominated by land reclamation and sea defences since Roman times. Burnham was seriously affected by the Bristol Channel floods of 1607, with the present curved concrete wall being completed in 1988. There have been many shipwrecks on the Gore Sands, which lie just offshore and can be exposed at low tides. Lighthouses are hence prominent landmarks in the town, with the original lighthouse known as the Round Tower built to replace the light on the top of the 14th century tower of St Andrews Church. The 110-foot (34-metre) pillar or High Lighthouse and the low wooden pile lighthouse or Lighthouse on legs on the beach were built to replace it. The town's first lifeboat was provided in 1836 by the Corporation of Bridgwater.
A stone pier was built in 1858 by the Somerset Central Railway. Soon afterwards, in 1860, a steamer service to Wales was inaugurated, but it was never a commercial success, and ended in 1888. Burnham-on-Sea railway station was the terminus of the Burnham branch of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. It opened in 1858, closed to scheduled passenger traffic in 1951, and stopped being used for excursions in 1962. The former Great Western Railway station is now known as Highbridge and Burnham. A second pier, built of concrete between 1911 and 1914, is claimed to be the shortest pier in Britain.
Burnham-on-Sea is notable for its beach and mudflats, the danger they pose to individuals and shipping, and the efforts to which locals have gone in defending their town and preventing loss of life. Burnham is close to the estuary of the River Parrett where it flows into the Bristol Channel, which has the second highest tidal range in the world.
The original lighthouse, known as the Round Tower, was built after the local vicar, either John Goulden in 1764 or Walter Harris in 1799, raised a subscription amongst the local population to replace the light on the top of St Andrews Church tower. The four-storey Round Tower was built next to the church. A 900 ft (270 m) stone pier was erected in 1858 by the Somerset Central Railway. Soon afterwards, in 1860, a steamer service to Wales was inaugurated, but it was never a commercial success, and ended in 1888. The pier retains its railway lines under a surface coating of concrete.
Burnham-on-Sea railway station was the terminus of the Burnham branch of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, but the tracks continued onto the jetty, where ferry services to South Wales could be boarded. The station opened in 1858 as Burnham, and was renamed Burnham-on-Sea in 1920. It closed to scheduled passenger traffic in 1951 and stopped being used for excursions in 1962.

According to the 2011 census the population of the parish (i.e. including Highbridge) was 19,576, of which the populations of the wards of Burnham Central and Burnham North, which made up most of the town, totalled 13,601.
