【4K Town Walking Japan #381】Taketa OITA ぶらり散歩 竹田 大分

The first town walk in Oita Prefecture is the town of Taketa, an ancient city rich in nature, close to the Aso and Kuju mountain ranges. This city, which developed as a castle town of Oka Castle, has many famous places and historic sites such as castle ruins, traditional townscapes, remains of samurai residences, and many temples and shrines. On a sunny summer afternoon, I would like to take a leisurely stroll around the old town centering on JR Bungo-Taketa Station,.

Start point : 32°58'14.7N 131°23'25.3E

This time, our hosts visited Bungotakada, a city located in Oita Prefecture’s Kunisaki Peninsula.
The city developed long ago as the peninsula’s commercial center, and its “Showa Town” (Showa no Machi) is known for its nostalgic shopping arcades recreating the bustling atmosphere of the time.

There are many retro shops lining the streets, including cafes to experience Japan’s time-honored tea culture; Nikuno Kanaoka, where you can taste exquisite “Okara Croquette” enjoyed since the Showa period; Konchu no Yakata, an offbeat store that sells unique toy insects, and more.
Strolling through this old-fashioned neighborhood will make you feel as if you’ve slipped back in time!

One of the symbols of Showa Town is Showa Roman Gura, a theme park recreating the Showa era.
The facility was built from a renovated rice storehouse, and is filled with fun!
Highlights include the Showa no Yumemachi 3 Chome-kan, which recreates daily life, classrooms, and more from the era; Dagashiya no Yume Museum, which boasts a collection of roughly 60,000 carefully-selected childhood toys and such from around the 1950s (Showa 30); and the “teamLab Gallery Showa no Machi,” an immersive interactive digital art experience from teamLab.

Plus, Showa Town is also the starting point of the “Koikana Road,” which connects a series of spots known for granting luck in love.

This gorgeous 20 km route connects Showa Town with Cape Nagasakibana, famous for its stunning arrangement of flowers and art.
It is dotted with highlights like Awashima Shrine, dedicated to the god of matchmaking, and the Matama Coast, renowned for stunning sunsets, weaving together a romantic seaside drive with some of Oita’s most photogenic scenery in the background.

Discover the charm of old-school Japan in Showa Town, and tour the matchmaking spots of the Koikana Road for some shots to light up your socials!

Our hosts visited Hita City, Oita Prefecture.

At Ontayaki Village, which coexists seamlessly with the grand nature of Hita City, they met potters with the inheritance of traditional skills, and watched as they made pottery using a “Kara-usu”(mortars), which has been passed down since the Edo Period.
The sound of the Kara-usu smashing the clay echoing throughout the quiet village relaxes the soul.
The clay used for the pottery is collected in the local area, and only that with a high concentration of iron and reddish hues is used.
Once it is smashed with the Kara-usu together with the abundant water of Hita, the potters can create traditional masterpieces using their hands. As everyday utensils, they add a simple, homespun warmth into one's life.

Next up, our hosts visited Mameda Town, which is registered as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings for its Edo Period townscape that remains today.

It is also dubbed “Kyushu's Little Kyoto,” and our hosts had the opportunity to meet craftspeople who have inherited ancient techniques.
Such traditions are protected at a sake brewery that brews with Oita Prefecture rice and Hita water, and visitors can purchase sake and original products while enjoying the warm and mellow aromas of “koji” fermentation mold.

There is also a Sake brewery museum that showcases the history and culture of sake brewing, along with the Sake Study Room to learn about the process and appearances of sake brewing as it was handed down from generation to generation.

Next, they visited Life Design Shop Areas, which introduces the works of local craftspeople, the manufacturing techniques and culture that have been passed down in Hita City, which flourished under direct control of the shogunate, after the placement of a “Gundai” (a rural intendant) since the Azuchi-Momoyama Period.
The shop is full of original products designed by local craftspeople.

Hita City is also a famous furniture manufacturing region, which, when combined with Ontayaki pottery and other household items, allows you to fill your life entirely with local products, a rarity even in Japan.
Our hosts listened as the shop owner shared his thoughts on Hita’s multi-generational crafting scene and how the shop supports the town.

At Cafe & Bar Kotonean, our hosts relished the original Dolce Shaved Ice, which is made from the delicious water of Hita turned into soft and fluffy ice with seasonal fruits and more grown in Kyushu. The popular classic shaved ice is available all year, while different seasonal flavors are offered at limited times.
Moreover, the tableware is made of local Hita cedar wood, giving the cafe a regional feel adored by the community.

Lastly, they visited Caffel Hina-no-Sato and rode a houseboat on the Mikuma River, taking in the striking nature of Hita and stunning sunset.
It is said that houseboats have a history in Hita stretching back to the Edo Period, and while they are popular in summer, Caffel Hina-no-Sato’s original houseboats host night cruises between April and September, and sunset cruises from October to March, allowing you to enjoy them not only summer, but whenever you visit.

They own several different houseboats, offering attractions like a clear panel ceiling to look up at the stars while cruising, or a cafe to savor treats on the river.
The cruise offered an elegant way to experience the magnificent nature of Hita, with its spectacular views of the sky and river, and the fresh breeze blowing through the air.

We hope that this video inspires you to visit Hita and experience the local crafts passed down the generations, and embrace the magnificent nature.

This time, our host visited Bungoono City in Oita Prefecture to experience a “nohaku” farm stay in a beautiful mountain village.

Nohaku is an abbreviation of the Japanese phrase “noson minpaku,” which translates as “farming village lodging,” and it started in Japan in Oita Prefecture’s Ajimu Town.

Similarly to a homestay, you’ll spend the night in a residence of an agricultural, mountain, or fishing village, and mingle with the locals while experiencing their everyday life.

Many of these are run by couples and families, and overflow with unique charm and heartfelt service. With a homely, warm ambience, you’ll feel as if you’re part of the family, and greetings like “tadaima” (I’m home) and “ittekimasu” (I’m going out), will quickly become natural.

Asayake, an accommodation facility DIY renovated from an old homestead, was created by a couple with lots of experience as the former Local Vitalization Cooperators for Bungoono City.

Asayake has a traditional Japanese “washitsu” room (max capacity 4) and a Western-style room (max capacity 2), so groups, families, couples, and friends are able to stay.

In addition, the bathtub and bathroom walls are made from hinoki cypress wood, and soaking amidst its warmth and vibrant aromas is utter bliss.

Outdoor bamboo cooking experiences are also held utilizing the abundant nature of the mountain village.
This activity, popular even with families, has participants cut the bamboo, fashion it into a cooker, and steam rice using charcoal for a one-of-a-kind, out-of-the-ordinary experience.
Bamboo-steamed rice is even more fragrant than normal, and is imbued with faint bamboo aromas, making it extra delicious.
While waiting for the rice to cook, our host enjoyed meeting the chickens lovingly raised in the village by the couple, which you can also try feeding.

Asayake also has its own home vegetable garden, and our host was able to harvest seasonal vegetables from the property’s farm.
While being shown the correct techniques, they carefully hand-picked the vegetables one by one.
These vegetables are pesticide-free, and are grown on the abundant nutrients of the land, ensuring they are both highly nutritious and delicious.

Meals consist of dishes using seasonal and locally-picked ingredients. Our host also enjoyed “tamago kake gohan” (egg on rice) with fresh eggs from the chickens raised on the farm, and she was delighted by the fantastic taste!

Generally, the main meal at dinner is wild game cooking using high-quality venison acquired from hunters in the mountains of Bungoono City. These painstakingly crafted dinners are packed with the goodness of the mountain, and are a must-try!
Breakfast is traditional Japanese cuisine consisting of Ogata rice (from local rice terraces) with fish, “tsukemono” pickles, and more.
The drinks also use plenty of homegrown fruit, offering a gentle, delectable flavor that envelops the palate.
Please check the official website for details on how to book and find each facility.

We hope that this video inspires you to visit the beautiful mountain villages of Bungoono City to experience the bounties of the four seasons.

Walking video of Showa Town in Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture【大分県 豊後高田市 昭和の町】

The central shopping district of Bungotakada was the most prosperous town on the Kunisaki Peninsula from the Edo period to the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa 30s. It has been a key point of maritime transportation since the Edo period, and even in the early Showa period, many carriers to and from Keihanshin were anchored in Isomachi. The road was a collection of five main lines, and was a key point to the inner part of the peninsula and the coastal area and Usa area. However, it is gradually being left behind by the waves of the times and becoming a lonely town like many shopping streets.
did.

Therefore, Showa Town was launched in 2001 to revive the energy and vitality of the Showa 30's, the last era when the shopping district was energetic. Showa Town certified stores started from 7 stores at the beginning, and now there are about 40 stores. Today, it is in the limelight nationwide and is a shopping district that welcomes about 400,000 visitors annually. In Showa Town, there is a heart-to-heart exchange that modern people have left behind.
