Cornwall Best Beaches (Top 10)

Cornwall is famous for the quality and variety of its beaches. The long, exposed stretches of sand on the north coast, such as Perranporth and Godrevy, provide excellent surfing conditions and are great places to walk on a stormy winter's day. The more sheltered sandy coves of the south coast, such as Porthcurno and Praa Sands, offer excellent swimming and protection from cold northerly winds. Remote beaches such as Harlyn and Kynance offer the chance to really get away from it all, while bustling town beaches, such as Marazion and Porthmeor, are great places to spend the day, with plenty of cafes, restaurants and galleries within easy walking distance. Here we have picked out our 'Top Ten beaches in Cornwall.

Bude is a seaside town in north east Cornwall, England. There are a number of good beaches in the Bude area, many of which offer good surfing conditions. Bude was the founder club in British Surf Life Saving. Summerleaze, Crooklets and 'middle' beach, are all within the town.

In 1953 Bude became home to the first Surf Life Saving Club in the UK, while the popular lido Bude Sea Pool opened in 1930. Bude Sea Pool is a partially man-made tidal swimming pool or lido in the rocks at Summerleaze Beach, Bude, Cornwall. The pool was previously administered by Cornwall Council but lost public funding in 2010/11. The Friends of Bude Sea Pool, a volunteer charity organisation, was formed in May 2011. The group aims to preserve, improve and enhance the sea pool as an amenity for the benefit of the community and visitors to the town. The pool is open 365 days a year, but only lifeguarded by RNLI during high seasons. The RNLI and the Bude Surf Lifesaving Club use the pool for training and exams. Bude Sea Pool is a popular attraction and is ranked number one visitor attraction in Bude.

In the 18th century there was a small unprotected tidal harbour at Bude. The Bude Canal Company built a canal and improved the harbour. Around twenty small boats use the tidal moorings of the original harbour during the summer months. Most are sport fishermen, but there is also some small-scale, semi-commercial, fishing for crab and lobster.

Bude is home to a number of sports teams including Bude RFC – the town's rugby club, and Bude Town FC – the local football club. Bude is the host town of the North Cornwall Cup, a large youth football event held every August. Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club is ideally situated within the town centre. Bude is also home to the Bude Cricket Club.

Did you know there is a canal in Bude? A circular walk around Bude and Bude Canal

Join us as we walk along the vast, beautiful beach on a crisp, sunny day in February.

Did you know that there is a half tide marker in a cluster of rocks to aid navigation into the harbour? Did you know that the beach is up to a mile wide at low water? Did you know that it is rumoured the Atlantic Rollers can be heard for 10 miles?

The harbour at Bude is fascinating. At the entrance of the harbour is a pair of lock gates that are open at high tide to allow boats in and out. The lock gates give a big clue as to the purpose of the harbour and beyond. It is actually the start of Bude Canal which was completed in 1825 to carry sand from the beach to fertilise the farmlands in the area.

We follow the first part of the Canal using the tow path which has been beautifully restored. Only the first couple of miles of the Canal is still in existence, with two working lock gates. There are some architectural features at the end of this first stretch where an inclined plane was used to lift tub boats to the next passage of water.

Join us as we explore the remnants of the former industrial innovation that was revolutionary at the time.
