Stokesay Castle (Shropshire) 11.06.07

Stokesay Castle is a fortified manor house in Stokesay, Shropshire, England. It was built in the late 13th century by Laurence of Ludlow, then the leading wool merchant in England, who intended it to form a secure private house and generate income as a commercial estate. Laurence's descendants continued to own the castle until the 16th century, when it passed through various private owners. By the time of the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1641, Stokesay was owned by William Craven, the first Earl of Craven and a supporter of King Charles I. After the Royalist war effort collapsed in 1645, Parliamentary forces besieged the castle in June and quickly forced its garrison to surrender. Parliament ordered the property to be slighted, but only minor damage was done to the walls, allowing Stokesay to continue to be used as a house by the Baldwyn family until the end of the 17th century.

Ashby de la Zouch Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Leicestershire, and around 15 miles south of Derby, is the town of Ashby de la Zouch.

The town's distinctive name means 'ash tree farm/settlement', with the 'de la Zouch' suffix added in 1160 when Norman nobleman Alain de Parrhoet La Zouch inherited his position as Lord of the Manor by marriage. Locally, it is commonly referred to as, simply, Ashby.

In the late 15th century Edward IV granted Ashby Manor to William, Lord Hastings, who converted it into a castle and also rebuilt St Helen's Church nearby in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The church would later be enlarged in the late 19th century.

During the English Civil War Ashby de la Zouch Castle was occupied by a Royalist garrison. The castle was surrendered to the Parliamentarians in 1646 following a year-long siege, and later slighted to prevent further use. The castle would later be referenced in Walter Scott's historical novel Ivanhoe from the early 19th century.

Historically, skilled craftsmen including silversmiths, swordsmiths and clock makers operated in the vicinity of Market Street. From the early 19th century Ashby de la Zouch became a spa town following the discovery of water with medicinal properties in the mining village of Moira nearby. The Ivanhoe Baths were built in 1822, followed by the adjacent Hastings Hotel in 1827 (now Royal Hotel). The baths would eventually close in 1884 due to falling visitor numbers, apparently caused by a surge in popularity of seaside resorts.

In 1849 a railway station opened in Ashby de la Zouch. This formed part of the Midland Railway's line between Leicester and Burton-on-Trent. However, in 1964 the station was closed as part of the notorious Beeching cuts, along with over 2000 other stations across the country in an effort to encourage motorway travel. Today the nearest railway station is Burton-on-Trent. Direct bus services from Leicester, Coalville and Swadlincote, among other locations, are available.

Coombe Abbey Park - 4K Drone Shot

Coombe Country Park is a country park located in Warwickshire, England. The park is only 4.5 miles (7.5 km) east of Coventry city centre and is managed by Coventry City Council. The park has been developed from the grounds of an old Cistercian abbey, the buildings of which have now been converted into the Coombe Abbey hotel.

In the 18th century the landscape of the park was designed by Capability Brown making it an historically important site for the region, however evidence dates back to occupation in the area to the Romans. The eldest daughter of James VI and I, Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia was also educated at Coombe Abbey, and there are links to Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.

The statue in the lake, 'Fisherman and Nymph', is by Percy George Bentham.

Music is Medieval dance (Ductia, 13th century), anonymous.

Acton Burnell Castle is a 13th-century fortified manor house, located near the village of Acton Burnell, Shropshire, England (grid reference SJ534019). Beacon Fell Country Park in Lancashire's Ribble Valley

Beacon Fell Country Park.
This superb rural country park is roughly 10 miles north of Preston and is signposted from Longridge, Broughton and Whalley. Overlooking the great Lancashire Plain, the park offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views across Lancashire. Specially managed to provide for the day-tripper with excellent free car parking and picnic areas, Beacon Fell provides the ideal day out for all the family.
The Beacon Fell Country Park consists of 110 hectares (271 acres) of woodland, moorland and farmland. The Beacon Fell summit is 266 metres (873 feet) above sea level and offers spectacular views of the Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay. On a clear day it is even possible to see the Isle of Man. There is an abundance of wildlife for those who are prepared to be observant. Rabbits and hares are frequent and are easily spotted. Roe deer are a little more elusive, but patience may well be rewarded! Stoats and weasels can be seen running across the road or clambering over the dry stone walls. As many as 11 species of dragonflies and damselflies may be seen around the ponds during the summer months.
Beacon Fell Country Park is one of the oldest in the country, being designated in 1970. It also provides an excellent base for Lancashire Countryside Ranger service, who provide help and advice for anyone who is interested in wildlife and the environment. There is a value-for-money café too, selling local-produced high-quality food and drink.

Discover Stanton - Peaceful walk through this charming English village

This video is 4k
Walking in Stanton, a peaceful small Village in Gloucestershire, South West England. Only 198 people reside here, so it is very quiet. The setting is perfect for painters or photographers looking for old traditional stony houses and cottages. We find our way to St Michael's and All Angels church, a medieval building dating back to 12th C.
Stanton isn't very touristy, but hikers and history lovers can enjoy the many architectural details the village has kept throughout the centuries.

Croft Sunday Car Boot Sale - VIDEO TOUR (Croft, Leicestershire, UK)

Visiting Croft Sunday car boot in Leicestershire. It's probably the biggest car boot sale I've ever seen and definately the biggest in the midlands, if not, UK! It starts REALLY EARLY at 5:30am so bring your flashlights lol! £7 to sell as a car, £1 entry on foot. We made some good money selling here!

Address: Broughton Rd, Stoney Stanton, Leicester LE9 4JA, UK
Phone: +44 7540 293058
Website:

Car boot sales or boot fairs are a form of market in which private individuals come together to sell household and garden goods. They are popular in the United Kingdom, where they are often referred to simply as 'car boots'. In America, you would call this a 'swap meet' (but without the Mexican folk lol), or maybe like a large 'neighborhood yard sale'.

Car boot sales are becoming prevalent across many cities and towns and have evolved from shady operations selling mass produced products, to anyone and everyone attempting to sell surplus household items. Some scientific research has studied people's shopping habits at car boot sales. These group of scientists see the rotation of surplus household stock as essential as it prevents waste and disposal costs, and also produces a small community where thriftiness and entrepreneurship flourish. The term car boot sale refers to the selling of items from a car's boot. Although a small proportion of sellers are professional traders selling goods, or indeed browsing for items to buy, most of the goods on sale are used personal possessions. Car boot sales are a way of attracting a large group of people in one place to recycle useful but unwanted domestic items that otherwise might have been thrown away. Car boot sales generally take place in the summer months. However, in a growing trend, indoor boot sales, and all-year hard-standing outdoor boot sales, are now appearing in some parts of the UK. Items for sale are extremely varied, including for example antiques and collectables, as in a flea market. Car boot sales are also very popular in parts of Australia, and have a growing presence in mainland Europe.

Windy afternoon at Acton Bridge (ACB/WCML) | Tuesday 6.04.2021

Welcome to another video from Trains_Planes_442417!

*2160p, 4K HD*

A quick change of plans resulted me in taking a trip to Acton Bridge, a place I thoroughly enjoyed the last time I was there so, thought it would be nice to return to see what's about!

Sadly, I didn't see as much of a variety as last time but still saw some good stuff. Including, DRS 57 308 on a training run, GBRf 60002, x2 class 70s and DB 90 034 also on training runs!

The weather was crazy for this time of year: snow showers and very windy. So, I apologise for the windiness!

This video includes:

London North Western Railway (LNWR): 350 (Desiro)
DB Schenker: 66 & 90 | DRS: 57 & 88 | Freightliner: 66 & 70 | GBRf: 60 & 66

The reinterment of Elizabeth Cookworthy, and another person

Elizabeth Howard, a member of the Society of Friends (or Quakers) was born on 6th October 1763 at Lower Thames Street in the parish of St Dunstan in the East in the City of London.

Her father, Thomas Howard (2 March 1737 - 29 April 1824) was a brazier and tinplate worker.

On 10th May 1792, at the Friends' Meeting House, Peter's Court, Westminster, she became the second wife of William Cookworthy, grandson of the William Cookworthy who discovered how to make porcelain using Cornish kaolin, or china clay.

Elizabeth's husband was a chemist and druggist in Plymouth so after her marriage she moved to the town with him.

He died in Plymouth on 9th May 1797 and was buried close to his first wife in the Friend's Burial Ground, Vennel Street, Plymouth on 14th May.

Elizabeth lived as a widow for over thirty years and died in Plymouth on 9th October 1833.

She was buried in the same grave as her husband's first wife on 18th October 1833.

The graves in the Vennel Street Burial Ground (later known as Treville Street Burial Ground) were excavated in 1955 as part of the building of the new Bretonside Bus Station. The remains were reinterred in the Quaker Burial Ground at Efford Cemetery in 1956.

During the demolition of the Bus Station in December 2017 Elizabeth's lead coffin was discovered, buried at a much greater depth than the others.

It could easily be identified by the coffin plate which gave her name, age and date of death.

In Grave 109 some other remains were discovered. These could not be identified but were reburied with Elizabeth's.
