Places to see in ( Blandford Forum - UK )

Places to see in ( Blandford Forum - UK )

Blandford Forum, commonly Blandford, is a market town in the North Dorset district of Dorset, England, sited by the River Stour about 24 km northwest of Poole. It is the administrative headquarters of North Dorset District Council.

Blandford is notable for its Georgian architecture, the result of rebuilding after the majority of the town was destroyed by a fire in 1731. The rebuilding work was assisted by an Act of Parliament and a donation by George II, and the rebuilt town centre—to designs by local architects John and William Bastard—has survived to the present day largely intact.

Blandford Camp, a military base, is sited on the hills two miles to the north east of the town. It is the base of the Royal Corps of Signals, the communications wing of the British Army, and the site of the Royal Signals Museum.

Blandford is situated between Cranborne Chase and the Dorset Downs, to the south east of the Blackmore Vale, 24 km (15 mi) northwest of Poole and 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Salisbury. It is sited in the valley of the River Stour, mostly on rising ground northeast of the river, but with some development south of the river at Blandford St Mary.

ost of the buildings in Blandford's centre are Georgian, due to the rebuilding after the 1731 fire and the absence of subsequent change. Pevsner stated that hardly any other town in England can be compared with it. A 1970 report by Donald Insall Associates described Blandford as the most complete and cohesive surviving example of a Georgian country town in England, with the Market Place area in particular given the status of An Area of National Importance and described as a brilliant master piece . Buildings that have received Grade I listing by English Heritage are the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, the town hall and corn exchange, The Old House, Coupar House, Pump House, and several buildings in Market Place: numbers 18, 20 and 26, and the old Greyhound Inn. All the listed structures in Market Place, including the church and another seventeen buildings with either Grade II or Grade II* status, form a group, together with several listed properties in West Street and East Street.

Coupar House, dated around 1750, is the largest private house in Blandford that dates from the post-fire period. It has a richly decorated interior with a notable staircase, and is unique among the town's private dwellings for having Portland stone dressings to its brick façade, though the design of this frontage has been described as curiously amateurish with little attention ... paid to rules of proportion.

Blandford lies at the junction of the A350 and A354 main roads but is skirted by an eastern bypass. The main road running through the town is the B3082, connecting Blandford Forum to Wimborne Minster. Buses run from the town to locations including Poole, Bournemouth, Salisbury and Shaftesbury with the primary operator being Wilts & Dorset. Blandford is 15 miles (24 km) from Bournemouth Airport.

Blandford is 15 miles (24 km) from Poole railway station. From 1860 to 1964, Blandford Forum was a stop on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, which ran from Bath to Bournemouth, until the line closed to passengers in 1966. Located between Templecombe and Broadstone, the railway was still open until the closure of the Blandford's goods yard in 1969, after which the track was lifted. The station was immortalised in 1964 in the song Slow Train by Flanders and Swann.

( Blandford Forum - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Blandford Forum . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Blandford Forum - UK

BEST ENGLAND GOLF TOURS with Mark Crossfield & Coach Lockey

BEST UK GOLF TOURS: Rory plays golf at Isle of Purbeck Golf Club with Mark Crossfield & Coach Lockey post lockdown 2021. On their way around this spectacular Bournemouth Golf Tour golf course, Rory talks about some of the best places in the UK to go on an England Golf Tour.

SUBSCRIBE:

The Isle of Purbeck's golf club was originally formed in 1892, and is among the most spectacular courses in England. Visitors will enjoy splendid views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, but the terrific scenery is not the Isle of Purbeck's only selling point; the course has consistently been included in Golf World's list of the Top 100 Golf Courses in Great Britain.

Past owners include the children's author Enid Blyton, and it was under her stewardship that the club added the nine-hole Dene Course to the original Purbeck layout. The Purbeck may only measure 6,295 yards, but there is no shortage of menace in the shape of the heather and devilish bunkers. Arguably the most picturesque course in the area, the Isle of Purbeck is a firm favourite on Bournemouth's excellent golfing trail.

Walking London's Lost Rivers - The Tyburn (4K)

A walk along the course of one of the lost Rivers of London - The Tyburn. This buried river flows from Hampstead through Swiss Cottage and Regent's Park, along Marylebone Lane, through Mayfair and Green Park beneath Buckingham Palace where it splits into channels and we follow it as it joins the Tachbrook to make its confluence with the Thames near Vauxhall Bridge.

Ep5 Flying The S&D - NORTH DORSET RAILWAY (UK) - Vision to Reality - 4K

In this episode we take a closer look at the achievements and aspirations of The North Dorset Railway at Shillingstone.
We discuss the feasibility of re-instating part of the original track bed from here to Sturminster Newton, and show behind the scenes footage of the railway's current activities.

Local politicians and town councils show their support for the project, and good progress has already began on extending the line Northwards to Lamb Bridge.
Small scale operations may even begin in the next couple of years!

....and we meet some of the volunteers, and they tell us what it means to them to volunteer on the railway.

Phibsboro - Dorset Street | Walking City Tour | County Dublin | Ireland | Travel n' Explore Ireland

#phibsboro #dorsetstreet #ireland #dublin #dublinireland #travelireland

Dorset Street, Sráid Dorset in Irish) is an important thoroughfare on the northside of Dublin, Ireland, and was originally part of the Slighe Midh-Luchra, Dublin's ancient road to the north that begins where the original bridging point at Church Street is today. Subsequently, yet prior to the street being given its current name in the 18th century, the road was known as Drumcondra Lane and was shown on maps as such. It is divided into Dorset Street Lower (northeast end) and Dorset Street Upper (southwest end).

The street runs northeast from Abbey Street and Bolton Street at Dominick Street junction, north of Parnell Square and Mountjoy Square, and leads into Drumcondra Road at Binn's Bridge on the Royal Canal. It makes up part of the most common route from Dublin Airport to the city centre, and the R132 regional road follows Dorset Street for part of its route.[1] It meets the R135 route at the junctions with Blessington Street, location of the Blessington Street Basin, and St. Mary's Place; other major roads feeding onto this spine street include North Circular Road, Gardiner Street, Eccles Street, North Frederick Street, and Granby Row.

Physically the street rises up from the Liffey valley at its south western end to its apex at roughly where it meets with Blessington and North Frederick Streets; proceeding north-west the street slopes down again on the approach to Binn's Bridge at the Royal Canal.

Some early Georgian houses are dotted along the street, primarily identifiable by the stone Gibbsian doorcase entrances, and close to the crossroads with Blessington and North Frederick Streets. Much of the street redeveloped during the Victorian era, with a number of significant buildings built, such as the Gothic style stone-built Dominican priory, designed by J. L. Robinson in 1884–87 at the corner of Dominick Street, while across from it is the red brick Italianate former fire station, designed by C. J. McCarthy and completed in 1903. Much of the street consists of vernacular Victorian terraces, with shops opening straight onto footpaths at ground-floor level. During the latter part of the twentieth century, stretches of the street were again redeveloped by Dublin Corporation for social housing flat complexes near Dominick Street.

Defined by Victorian redbrick architecture, residential Phibsborough has modern bars and bistros alongside long-standing pubs and chip shops. Young Dubliners brunch at artsy cafes and browse indie book and clothing stores. Phizzfest runs a year-round programme of live theatre and music at various… more

The Bradogue River crosses the area in a culvert, and the Royal Canal passes through its northern reaches, notably at Cross Guns Bridge. Formerly, a branch of the canal ran to the Broadstone basin, later the site of the Midland Great Western Railway Terminus and currently the headquarters of Bus Éireann. Mountjoy Prison is located in the district.
Phibsborough

Phibsborough is located about 2  km north of the old city centre, in Dublin 7. It is bordered by Glasnevin to the north, Drumcondra to the east, Grangegorman and Cabra to the west and the King's Inns on Constitution Hill to the south. The busy commercial centre of Phibsborough is located around the crossroads of the Phibsborough and North Circular Road, commonly known as Doyle's Corner

BusEdit

Phibsborough is served by many Dublin Bus routes passing outbound to the north city suburbs: numbers 4, 9, 38, 38a, 38b, 38d, 39n, 46a, 83, 83a, 120, 122, 140 and 155. Inbound services serve the city centre.

LuasEdit

Phibsborough, Grangegorman and Broadstone both have stops on the Luas Green Line located along the former Midland & Great Western Railway line. The Phibsborough stop is located at the railway cutting between the North Circular Road and the Cabra Road. It has lateral platforms. Access to the platform level is from both the North Circular and Cabra Roads via stairs and lifts from the new deck levels abutting the existing road overbridges. The Broadstone stop is located at Prebend Street and the Western Way. The Phibsboro stop serves the residential communities and facilitates interchange with bus services on the North Circular and Cabra Roads. The Broadstone stop serves the Mountjoy area and the newly built Technological University Dublin campus located at Grangegorman.[4]

The Luas Cross City project has joined the Luas Red and Green lines with a line from Broombridge in North Dublin (interchange with Irish Rail station) and St. Stephen's Green Green Line stop. Services began in December 2017.

London walk: Marylebone & Oxford Street - Portman Square, James Street, St Christopher's narrated 4K

A mooch around Marylebone on a warm August afternoon in London yields so many surprises. A few seconds from Oxford Street lie Marylebone and the Portman Estate, full of history, eateries and boutique shops. In the heart of Marylebone, Chiltern Street and New Quebec Street provide special places to hang out or browse independent retailers. Portman Square has a history that includes Churchill's F Section while Manchester Square is the famous location for the album cover of the Beatles' Please Please Me AND in the history of the building homing the Wallace Collection there is a scandalous past involving a former Prince Regent. Before returning to Oxford Street, there are the cosy eateries of James Street and St Christopher's Shopping Centre.
