The country's capital city, Cardiff, is a lively and cosmopolitan place, while Wales's other cities, such as Swansea and Newport, offer a more traditional Welsh experience. Bridgend is a town in Bridgend County Borough in Wales, 18 miles west of the capital Cardiff and 20 miles east of Swansea. The river crossed by the original bridge, which gave the town its name, is the River Ogmore, but the River Ewenny also passes to the south of the town of Bridgend .
Bridgend railway station has regular services to Cardiff Central, Bristol Parkway and London Paddington to the east; Port Talbot Parkway, Neath, Swansea and the West Wales Line to the west; and Maesteg to the north. There are also services to Manchester Piccadilly. Bridgend is the western terminus of the Vale of Glamorgan Line which reopened to passenger traffic in 2005.
Wildmill railway station, about 1 mile (2 km) north of Bridgend railway station, serves the estates of Wildmill, Pendre and Litchard and is on the Bridgend-Maesteg branch line. A park and ride station at Brackla, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-east of Bridgend railway station is planned and is due to be constructed once capacity improvements have been made to the South Wales Main Line. Services to a new railway station in Llanharan began in December 2007. Bridgend bus station has services to urban and rural areas in South Wales. Most services are operated by First Cymru.
Bridgend's Travel to Work Area has expanded since 1991 and the 2001-based area now incorporates the western part of the Vale of Glamorgan. Bridgend recovered quickly from the decline of traditional industries, particularly coal-mining due to other alternative forms of employment. Wages are generally higher here than in other parts of the South Wales valleys. There are large industrial estates at Bridgend and Waterton (formerly Waterton Admiralty) which host a number of small-scale and multi-national companies, mainly manufacturing.

Both are stunning wild swimming spots and one of them you can even cliff dive.
The South of Wales is also home to lots of awesome waterfalls and in this guide I share with you my favorites. First being the Four Waterfalls Walk and the other two being Sgwd Gwladys and Henrhyd Falls.
Finally on the best places to visit in South Wales I included my favourite hiking spot found in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Llyn y Fan Fach is a lesser known South Wales hike with amazing views and a lake perfect for wild swimming!

12. Blaenavon, Torfaen
A good place to search for accommodation is Blaenavon, a town and community in Torfaen County. The home of award-winning mystery writer Dorothy Simpson, several famous rugby players, and Olympic athletes is high on a hillside on the Afon Lwyd source. It’s one of the Welsh best places to live. Thanks to the efforts being made by many thriving community groups who have served to improve the town. One of them is Future Blaenavon, whose efforts have led to the creation of a community garden down the town. In 2000, parts of Blaenavon were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The place occupying 33 square kilometers has several attractions, events and dance performances.

10. St Davids
St Davids is likely the only city found here. Also known as St Davids and the Cathedral Close or St David's, the community is the smallest geographical area granted city status in the UK by population and by urban area. The city, lying on the River Alun, is the final resting place of Saint David, Wales's patron saint. It was obviously named after him. The link to this patron is a powerful reason why things are going well for this one of the small cities.
9. Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
Just like Brecon and other places mentioned earlier, Abergavenny, a market town and community in Monmouthshire, well deserves its slot here. What we can’t be sure of is whether you would want the town in this 9th position. Okay, you’re free to let us know if it deserves a higher ranking. In any case, we all can agree that the town approximately 10 kilometers from the border with England has beautiful scenery, locally delicious food, and appealing ecotourism.

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

Bridgend Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the Welsh county borough of Bridgend (historically in Mid Glamorgan) and around halfway between Cardiff and Swansea, is the town of Bridgend, or Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr in Welsh.
Following William the Conqueror's invasion of 1066, the Normans would later build three castles close to where Bridgend town centre is located today. These were Newcastle Castle, Coity Castle and Ogmore Castle. In 1141 Ewenny Priory was founded, just south of the town centre. Its Norman nave still serves as the local parish church.
In the early 15th century a stone bridge was built over the River Ogmore, from where the town's name is derived, both in English and Welsh. This is believed to have been used by pilgrims on their way to St David's Cathedral in Pembrokeshire. In 1775 two of the bridge's stone arches were washed away in a flood, and were later rebuilt.
In the 17th century the first coal mining operations began just north of Bridgend. Ironworks and brickworks were also established around this period, however the ironworks ceased operating in 1836.
In 1850 the railway arrived in Bridgend. This brought about significant growth in the town as it allowed for the transportation of the local coal to the nearby ports. Today the station is situated on the South Wales Main Line, with direct services to Cardiff taking around 20 to 30 minutes, and Swansea in around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on stops. Bridgend is also home to a bus station providing access to, among other destinations, the seaside town of Porthcawl whose railway station was controversially closed in 1963.
Famous people from Bridgend include newsreader Huw Edwards. The metal band Bullet for My Valentine formed in Bridgend in 1998.

What are the best towns in Wales? We do not get to hear a lot about cities and towns in Wales, not as much as we do about those in England and Scotland. However, whenever the towns to live in the UK are ranked, Welsh towns find their way in. That inevitably reveals the best places to live in Wales. Sorting through the ranking, we are able to isolate the 12 best towns to live in Wales. Please bear in mind that our ranking relies to a large extent, but not entirely, on the most recent ranking of towns in Britain in the marketing report by the property finder company, Garrington’s. Factors considered are employment, green spaces, physical environment, quality of living, and architecture or heritage.
12. Narberth, Pembrokeshire
Just two years ago, Narberth was among the 8 Welsh villages and towns named the best places to live in the UK. It actually tops that ranking. Two years later, things are only getting better. A reputable online mortgage broker gives the town's average property price as 164,950 pounds. You can’t rush through your shopping in this beautiful small town. There are a lot of good and uncommon things to be bought and at reasonable prices there. On the high streets of this town are antique shops, vintage and craft outlets, award-winning cafes, delicatessens featuring local produce, restaurants and pubs among others. It also has a museum and romantic castle ruins. It has very good schools and great transport links.
11. Usk, Monmouthshire
Usk, a town and community in Monmouthshire, stands out in Wales. This town located 16 kilometers northeast of Newport is on the River Usk and is spanned by an arched stone bridge toward the western entrance to the town. This is a town with well-designed homes and bursting with community spirit.
We perfectly agree with the Sunday Times’ expert judges ranking Usk among the loveliest towns to live in Wales. Truly, on a more important note, a look at the air quality, school standards, broadband speed, and transport in this town will necessitate its inclusion here. It also ranks so well for green spaces, community culture, and the health of the attractive high street.
10. Glanaman, Carmarthenshire
Glanaman is another town with an overall high rank among the best towns to live in Wales. Out of 1372 places ranked in the United Kingdom, it ranks 71st. In the same ranking, we find it in the second position for natural beauty. For the quality of life rank, it holds the 200th position while its architectural beauty places it in the 796th position. As for green rank, it finds a place in number 555.
This town has a strong historical link to the ancient coal mining industry. Sited in the valley of the River Amman, Glanaman’s average family home cost is less than 350,000 pounds.

10 Worst Towns to Live in Wales
What are the worst towns to live in Wales? We don’t want to make it boring. Otherwise, we would have listed all the towns in Wales in the order of how they are considered good. Even if we could do that, some people may view such a listing as conjectural. Towns considered good by a reviewer may be seen as bad by another. But then, for the sake of this production, let’s assume that all the towns in Wales are good. But they can’t all be equally good. If some had higher degrees of goodness, yes, they are better. And if some towns are better than others, the logic follows that some are worse. On that positive note, let’s discuss the 10 worst towns to live in Wales.
10. Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale, the town at the head of the valley which is formed by the Ebbw Fawr tributary of the Ebbw River is the largest town in Blaenau Gwent county borough. Its direct access to the A465 Heads of the Valleys trunk road doesn’t make it a good place to live in Wales. The town bordering the Brecon Beacons National Park Ebbw Vale isn’t economically viable with the second-lowest mean salary in Britain. In fact, for the people to survive, 5 food banks are operating in the community. This has also affected the town educationally. This is indicated by its having the worst GCSE results in Wales. Meanwhile, Ebbw Vale is the town with the cheapest home price in England and Wales as no one would be willing to buy a home in a place very bad to live in.
9. Pontypool
As we think about Pontypool, we’re filled with the emotion of love for the residents of the people. No, this doesn’t mean we love to live among them or envy their situation. We only salute their resilience that makes them remain in a town without no places to visit, no nightlife, no restaurants and bars, and with zero social life. This administrative center of the county borough of Torfaen has nothing like a sense of community. Ironically, there’s no privacy in this town as almost everyone will notice your presence or absence. Your financial status is in public knowledge. Care needs to be taken in such a town to select a date if you don’t want to have an incestuous amorous affair.
8. Llangefni
The case of Llangefni, the county town of Anglesey, whose name in Welsh means meaning “church on the River Cefni,” is pathetic. The town which is home to the principal offices of the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the second largest settlement in that county has too many bad reviews. But to stay on a kinder side, we would side with those who consider it one of the worst Welsh towns to live because of the number of old people in the town. The town is actually gradually taking up the appearance of old peoples’ homes as it has a higher percentage of older people. That should tell you that the town is boring and is economically disadvantaged. The town’s unemployment rate is higher than the national average.
7. Port Talbot
What image does the name of the town, Port Talbot evoke? If you choose to turn a blind eye to the negatives, you are likely to see a town and community of the home of one of the biggest steelworks in the world. That is cute. But that economic opportunity which covers a large area of land, dominating the southeast of the town does not come without a cost for the town. The environmental pollution this has caused for the town some 13 kilometers from Swansea has made it one of the worst places to live. The town is filled with the stench from this and other dirt dominating the place.
6. Llantwit Major
Our attention is now on Llantwit Major, a community on the Bristol Channel coast. This is one of 4 towns in the Vale of Glamorgan. The community located about 7.2 kilometers from Cowbridge, 14 kilometers from Bridgend, 16 kilometers from Barry, and 24 kilometers from Cardiff has not allowed these nice locations to rub off on it. It is one of the 10 worst places in Wales on this list for anyone who cares about safety. The crime rate there is rather on the high side and this is obviously inimical a good living. We would recommend living in any other place in Wales before mentioning Llantwit Major.

What are the most loved towns to live in Wales? You need to appreciate the features of the best towns in Wales to understand why Welsh love their towns and cities. And we love them too! You can gain some insight into what we are saying by considering the report by Garrington, a property finder company, on the ranking of the villages, towns, and cities in the United Kingdom based on the four categories of the physical environment, quality of living, architecture or heritage and going green. The nominated places were assessed by expert judges on the basis of factors such as schools, transport, broadband speed, and health of the high street, from all that, we present these 12 most loved towns in Wales for your consideration.
12. Porthmadog, Gwynedd
If the coastal town of Porthmadog could rank third best in Wales and 42nd in the UK as a whole, it should be loved by not only the residents but also the visitors. What brought this town to our list is its high ranks for both natural and architectural beauty. Yet, it’s not such a green town for it doesn’t rank so good in that regard. Nevertheless, you’re likely to love a beautiful town where the average family home is not up to 350,000 pounds.
11. Narberth, Pembrokeshire
The town of Narberth in Pembrokeshire in west Wales was once known as home to Pwll, Prince of Dyfed, in the Mabinogion. The excitement of its nomination in the Google Street View Awards as the home of Britain’s best shopping street is fetching it much love. Other things making it a lovable town are the Narberth Food Festival and The Grove. This is a town where you can stroll in the Oakwood Theme Park.
10. Machynlleth, Powys
Machynlleth, a market town in Powys, is surrounded by rolling green fields that make it an awesome town in Wales. It’s surprisingly a cosmopolitan center. For education, it’s loved as the Centre for Alternative Technology, an eco-hub in Europe where everyone from school kids to engineers learns about the need to protect the planet. Foodies will fall in love with Ynyshir, a Michelin-starred restaurant whose reputation goes far and wide as the 12th best restaurant in the whole of the UK by the Good Food Guide.
9. Cardigan, Ceredigion
We can’t do without this pleasant town in Ceredigion. We too love the town not because it is homonymic to our lovely winter-resistant garb, no, not for its name, but because of its features. And we possibly can’t tell you all that here. But we shall try. Cardigan ranks 5th in Wales and 47th across the UK. The most important feature of this attractive town is the average home cost. With less than, 325,000 pounds, you can own a home. But then, it also ranks well for architectural beauty and quality of life. It’s not doing badly on green rank with a score of 247 out of 1372.
8. Barmouth, Gwynedd
Barmouth, a town in Gwynedd, is the 8th most loved town in Wales. Wales Things To Do in one week United Kingdom
Life Doesn't Suck brings you our complete trip to the Welsh Countryside of Great Britain over the course of one week. In it you'll experience the most fun activities Wales has to offer, such as Pentre Ifan, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, The Smallest House in Great Britain, Brecon Beacons National Park, The Big Dipper Sand Dunes, The Henge of Anglesey North Wales aka Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber.
Along the way we stop at some famous Castles including Newcastle Castle, Candleston Castle, Coity Castle, Ogmore Castle, Manorbier Castle, Carew Castle, Cardiff Castle, Conwy Castle, Pembroke Castle and Ewenny Priory, which isn't a castle but looks like one.
We visit popular attractions like, The Doctor Who Museum.
We enjoy Welsh Food from the Candy isle of Sainsbury's including Maltesers and Cherry Laurel. We drink with the Welsh and chat with a drunk Welshman.
We visited the United Kingdom and discovered an incredible time in Wales!

Castles Everywhere - BRIDGEND To Ogmore Castle, Walking With ‘The Normans’ In Wales
Bridgend South Wales - Yes, another castle in Wales. This time I start my walk at Newcastle overlooking the River Ogmore and Bridgend town centre and walk along the river to Ogmore Castle.
Newcastle Castle was built in the 12th century as the River Ogmore was the border between the invading Normans and the Welsh to the West.
From the castle, I walk down Newcastle Hill to the River Ogmore and follow it through Bridgend. South towards the New Inn Bridge which is better known as the Dipping Bridge.
Then it’s across the fields past the ancient settlement of Verville to Ogmore Castle.
Ogmore (along with Coity and Newcastle) was part of a trio of castles built to guard Glamorgan.
All these castles are managed by CADW and are free to enter. Check their website for the latest opening times.

What are the greenest towns tin the United Kingdom? As many as 7 of the greenest towns in England are among the 10 greenest towns in the UK. This is not surprising at all. England is only being prevented from being equated with the entire United Kingdom. Thus, for records purposes and the sake of clarity, don’t be surprised to find towns and cities in England dominating listings of bests or worsts of towns and cities in the UK.
Other UK towns that slug it out with the towns in England on this list of the 10 greenest towns in Britain are Falkirk in Scotland, Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, and Bridgend also in Wales. It appears other regions of the United Kingdom have something to learn from England about nature and its preservation.
10. Barnsley, England
The first to be considered among the 10 greenest towns in the UK is Barnsley, a large market town and the fourth-largest settlement in South Yorkshire. This town doesn’t allow inappropriate development within its areas and the conditions in building permits are stricter. By doing this, it has been able to preserve its green space.
The River Dearne Valley and Worsbrough Mill Park and reservoir are just two examples of efforts that the town is making to be one of the greenest towns in both England and the entire United Kingdom. As of 2017, it has some 23,050 hectares of green belt which was first defined in 1979. Its rural landscape features encourage recreation and leisure interests.
9. Stafford, England
Stafford, a county town of Staffordshire in the West Midlands, lying about 24 kilometers north of Wolverhampton, 24 kilometers south of Stoke-on-Trent, and 39 kilometers northwest of Birmingham, is the next of the 10 greenest towns in the UK.
The nature reserves in Stafford include Astonfields Balancing Lakes, a local nature reserve of two lakes constructed for flood protection. There’s also Doxey Marshes, a wet grassland habitat about three kilometers northwest of the town center managed by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. It’s 150 hectares of nature reserve and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It's home to wading birds and wildfowl. Kingsmead Marsh and Radford Meadows are also green spaces in this town.
8. Falkirk, Scotland
Falkirk, a large town in the Central Lowlands of Scotland. The town which is 37.5 kilometers northwest of Edinburgh and 33 kilometers northeast of Glasgow is doing great in maintaining a wide range of greenspace.
It has an initiative called Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN). The unrivaled network aims at transforming Central Scotland into a place where the environment adds value to the economy and people’s lives are enriched by its quality. GSGN has no peer in Europe as a green space initiative that has been embedded in all relevant plans, policies, and strategies. The result of this is seen in the green revolution in the town.
7. Daventry, England
Yet another town on this list is Daventry, a town that is close to the border with Warwickshire with a population of 25,026 as of 2011. As the sixth-largest town in Northamptonshire, it’s one of the 10 greenest towns in the UK.

Newcastle Castle - Bridgend

Newcastle Castle in Bridgend is a small and cozy 12th century structure that has changed little since then. Part of the Coity, Newcastle and Ogmore trio of castles built to defend the western front it now stands looking over Bridgend.

----- Short History -----
- In the early 11th century, William II encouraged Robert Fitzhamon, Baron of Gloucester to attack the Welsh Kingdom of Morgannwg in South Wales.
- Newcastle Castle was initially constructed as a ringwork in 1106 by William de Londres, one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan.
- William de Londres was a knight loyal to the Norman baron Robert Fitzhamon.
- Its defences were strengthened in the late 12th century.
- These included a 2m thick curtain wall.
- A welsh uprising is thought to have inspired the increase in local defences.
- It is noted for its exceptional stonework, including the Norman doorway.
- It remained in Royal ownership until the death of Henry II in 1189.
- Prince John then acquired it but handed it over to Morgan ap Caradog to strengthen welsh relations.
- In the early 12th century the castle changed hands multiple times.
- Tudor upgrades were added in the 16th century.
- In 1718 it was purchased by Samuel Edwin of Llanmihangel Place but later became part of the Dunraven estate.
- It has seen little attention since the late 12th century.
