Castle of Brasschaat
A look around at the castle of Brasschaat, a town in the north of Antwerp.

Te midden één van Vlaanderens mooiste parken is het befaamde Kasteel van Brasschaat gelegen. De indrukwekkende inkomhal met open haard en het zonnige terras met zicht op de parkvijver dompelen u meteen onder in de sfeer van luxe en grandeur uit lang vervlogen tijden. De omgeving met prachtige groenpartijen, vijvers, fonteinen en een unieke rozentuin schept meteen de juiste sfeer. In de 18e eeuw werd de Helhoeve tot een lusthof verbouwd en in 1864 kwam dit in bezit van graaf Auguste Reusens. Diens zoon liet in 1872 de Helhoeve slopen en daarvoor in de plaats kwam een groot kasteel: het Kasteel van Brasschaat. The famous Brasschaat Castle is located in the middle of one of Flanders' most beautiful parks. The impressive entrance hall with fireplace and the sunny terrace with a view of the park pond immediately immerse you in the atmosphere of luxury and grandeur from times long past. The environment with beautiful green areas, ponds, fountains and a unique rose garden immediately creates the right atmosphere. In the 18th century, the Helhoeve was converted into a pleasure garden and in 1864 it came into the possession of Count Auguste Reusens. His son had the Helhoeve demolished in 1872 and a large castle was built in its place: the Castle of Brasschaat. My Mini Euro Trip 2017; Brasschaat, Belgium
A travel vlog I made to capture the memories on my little summer getaway! In this Part 1 of my travel Vlog, I am departing from Kuala Lumpur to Paris Charles De Gaulle airport. Upon arrival, I took a train to Antwerp which passed through the beautiful countryside. Last but not least I then took a few trams and a bus to get to the quaint town of Brasschaat! The video contents are the bits and pieces of the town and some Belgian food! Towards the end, I am preparing to travel off to my next destination so in the meantime, enjoy and stay tuned! :)

Brusselse Bossen-Kattekesberg (Brasschaat)
De Brusselse Bossen is één van de laatste open weidelandschappen in Brasschaat. Het is 27 hectare groot en vormt samen met de speelzone Kattekesberg één groot geheel. Het dankt zijn opmerkelijke naam aan het feit dat in de 18de eeuw de orders tot bebossen vanuit Brussel kwamen, namelijk van het Oostenrijkse bewind. Het gebied Brusselse Bossen werd aangekocht door het Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos en de gemeente Brasschaat.
Het weidse landschap van de Brusselse Bossen contrasteert sterk met de nabijgelegen Kattekenberg (11 ha), die helemaal bebost is.
De grootste troef van de Brusselse Bossen is het afwisselend landschap. Je wandelt er zowel door kleine bosjes als door open weiden met mooie vergezichten. In mei siert een tapijt van bloeiende boterbloemen de weide. De aanpalende Kattekesberg is een groot speelbos voor kleine kapoenen: pret verzekerd!
Voor de dagjestoeristen waren de Kattekesberg en de Hondjesberg in de bossen van Sint-Mariaburg decennia lang trekpleisters. Hun ontstaan situeert zich in het neolitisch tijdperk. Van den Weyngaert liet de 10 meter hoge Kattekesberg in twee snijden door de aanleg van de Emmalei en beide stukken door een betonnen brug verbinden. Tevens liet hij er in 1912 een houten uitkijktoren van 25 meter hoog construeren. Vanop deze ‘belle-vue’ had men een prachtig uitzicht op de Polder en de Schelde.
De naam ‘Kattekesberg’ zou afgeleid zijn van ‘cattlesberg’, een beschutting voor het vee (cattle) tegen de roversbenden die die in de 17de eeuw de streek plunderden. Naar analogie met katten zou de andere heuvel de naam ‘Hondjesberg’ gekregen hebben.
Feit is dat de jeugdbewegingen uit Groot-Antwerpen tot in de jaren ’60 hier ontspanning kwamen vinden. De mei-bedevaarten van de Chiro blijven in ieders geheugen voortleven. Zelfs motorcrossen werden op de bergen georganiseerd. De Hondjesberg is inmiddels door een nieuwe verkaveling verdwenen.

We had lots of fun and a great time. When it was coffee time, I set up, for the first time, my tarp. It didn't go as easy as you see in other hiking clips but that's what learning is all about.

Het leven gaat snel en daarom moeten we proberen zoveel mogelijk fun te hebben. Als gezin met 3 kinderen weten we maar al te goed dat het niet steeds simpel is om iedere dag als een dartelend veulen rond te springen. Er zijn zeker lastige dagen, kinderen die wenen, ziek zijn, drukke agenda's, enz... Maar te tijd vliegt zo snel dat we zeker niet mogen vergeten om fun te hebben. Voor we het weten zijn de kinderen het huis uit. We proberen met ons kanaal een inspiratie te zijn voor gezinnen met kinderen. Leuke uitstapjes en ideeën willen we met jullie delen. Antwerp is home to many trades due to it being a port city, which is proven through its diverse populations, you can notice the mixed culture and immigration within this city. Then as a result of finding a China Town just outside the train station - I knew we had to get some Asian food too!
