【4K】Bicycle Journey | Waterloo | 4K | SLOW TV | Travel | Belgium

A journey from Woluwe-Saint-Pierre to Waterloo on a beautiful September afternoon. Fall is in the air!

The name of Waterloo was mentioned for the first time in 1102 designating a small hamlet at the limit of what is today known as the Sonian Forest, along a major road linking Brussels, Genappe and a coal mine to the south. Waterloo was located at the intersection of the main road and a path leading to a small farming settlement in what is now Cense. The crossing can still be found today as the intersection of the Chaussée de Bruxelles with Boulevard de la Cense. Waterloo was a place where travellers and merchants, particularly those carrying coal from the mine to the south, could find rest and protection from bandits.

Waterloo was located in the Duchy of Brabant created in 1183 with Leuven as the capital city. The Duchy of Brabant extended from Luttre to 's-Hertogenbosch in 1477. Brussels became the capital city of the Duchy of Brabant in 1267 and the capital city of the Burgundian Netherlands in 1430.

Waterloo started to develop during the 17th century. A royal chapel was built in 1687 in Petit-Waterloo, and was extended in 1826, becoming the Church of Saint Joseph of Waterloo.

During the late 18th century, whilst the region was under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire, a period of unrest marked the wake of the 1789 French Revolution. Reforms designed to quell those agitating to bring enlightenment ideas to the region were unsuccessful. in 1794, the French invaded, bringing an end to the region's Ancien Régime, encompassing the monasteries, their official record-keeping, and the privileges of the nobility.

Up until 1796, Waterloo was divided into two parts, Grand-Waterloo and Petit-Waterloo, depending, respectively, of the parishes of Braine-l'Alleud (Bishopric of Namur) and of Saint-Genesius-Rode (Bishopric of Mechelen). A new system based on municipalities was established under French rule. The municipality of Waterloo was created from Petit-Waterloo detached from Sint-Genesius-Rode and three former hamlets (Grand-Waterloo, Joli-Bois, Mont-Saint-Jean) detached from Braine-l’Alleud.

In 1813, half of the hamlet of Chenois was detached from Braine-l’Alleud and became part of Waterloo. In 1824, Waterloo grew again as the areas Roussart and Sainte-Gertrude from the Sonian Forest became part of the municipality. Waterloo had 1,571 inhabitants in 1801 and 3,202 in 1846.

In 1795, the invaded territories were divided into nine departments. Some municipalities, including Waterloo, became part of the Dyle department, which became the province of Brabant Méridional in 1815 under Dutch rule, following the defeat of Napoleon. Upon Belgian independence in 1830, it became part of the province of Brabant.

In 1977, the second half of the hamlet of Chenois was detached from Braine-l’Alleud and became part of Waterloo together with a part of the hamlet next to the Lion.

In 1995, the province of Brabant was divided to match the limits of the administrative regions of Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders created in 1980. The part in which Waterloo is situated became the province of Walloon Brabant.

The Battle of Waterloo took place near Waterloo on 18 June 1815 between the First French Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Seventh Coalition (troops from Prussia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Hanover, Brunswick and Nassau), under the main allied commanders, the Duke of Wellington and General von Blücher.

Louvain la Neuve, Belgium

Louvain-la-Neuve (pop. 30,000), 30km south of Brussels, is an almost exclusively student town. The town was only founded in 1972, after the split of the University of Leuven (Louvain in French) between the Dutch and French speakers in 1968, thus creating the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL).

Louvain-la-Neuve is not only th newest town in Belgium, but also a quite particular one, as half of its population are currently attending its university, while the other half is made mostly of former students, making it also the youngest town in the country.

The novelty of the town means that there is of course no historical buildings, but Louvain-la-Neuve make it up by its architectural harmony, pure air (the town is mostly pedestrian) and its spaciousness. It was designed around a lake and the modern layout of its streets certainly contrast with that of other Belgian cities.

In other words, Louvain-la-Neuve is more like a very big village where people greet each others at almost every corner, and parties presides over the life of its inhabitants.

The only touristic site is Museum of Louvain-la-Neuve, although the whole city is an attraction in itself.

Basingstoke Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hampshire, and roughly halfway between Southampton and West London, is the town of Basingstoke.

Basingstoke is named after the Basingas - an Anglo-Saxon tribe who settled in the area around the 7th century. 'Stoke' is simply Old English for 'place'. Two miles to the east is the village of Old Basing, which was the site of a battle in 871 AD where the kingdom of Wessex was defeated by the Danes.

Since 1214 Basingstoke has held a regular weekly market. During the Middle Ages it was a small market town, achieving relative prosperity via the wool industry. Over the coming centuries Basingstoke suffered multiple fires owing to the flammable properties of the timber-framed buildings with thatched roofs.

The architecture of Basingstoke is a stark blend of old and new. St Michael's Church on Church Street was consecrated in 1510. Around a century later Deanes Almshouses were built between 1607 and 1608 to house the poor, seen right at the start of the video. For the most part, the rest of Basingstoke is distinctly 20th century. This is due to it being allocated an overspill town in 1961 as a means to accommodate those wishing to commute to London from the post-war period onward.

In 1971 the M3 motorway opened, creating a direct route by car from Basingstoke to London. Over the decades that followed, multiple shopping centres were constructed, including The Malls and Festival Place. By 1988 central Basingstoke had become completely pedestrianised, utilising footbridges to span Churchill Way East - the busy main road running straight through the town centre. Since 1961 the population has grown from around 16,000 to over 100,000 today.

A couple of statues feature in the walk. The first, in order of appearance, is the Blue Coat Boy Statue. It stands on Cross Street on the site of the former Basingstoke Blue Coat School, founded in the 17th century from funds pledged in the will of wealthy businessman Richard Aldworth to set up a school to educate, feed, clothe and apprentice 10 poor children a year. The school eventually closed in 1880. To the north, on Alencon Link is the 'L'Arc' statue. Featuring two figures on either side of the road, each holding a curved pole, it represents Basingstoke's close relationship with its European twin towns as the curved poles, if extended, would meet to form a circle, creating a gateway. The twin towns are Alençon in France (hence the street name 'Alencon Link'), Braine-l'Alleud in Belgium and Euskirchen in Germany.

Famous people from Basingstoke include Elizabeth Hurley and the late Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.

Amigo Hotel Rocco Forte Brussels Belgium

Sign Up now for your free membership and benefit from exclusive perks and promotions in over 2000 luxury hotels worldwide.

The five-star Hotel Amigo has a rich historical pedigree spread over 500 years. The historic property used to be a prison in the 1500s. But hey, don't judge just yet. This offering from Rocco Forte Hotels is a combination of award-winning service and a glimpse into Brussels' rich history.

Brussels is well-known for its two culinary delights that include beer and chocolate. But the historic city extends beyond these two experiences. There is so much else to do. Along with numerous visit-worthy arts and cultural sites, it also features exquisite buildings and a picturesque square – the Grand Place.

Just around the corner from this square, which has been voted multiple times as the most beautiful square in Europe, it is one of Brussels' famous luxury hotels, Hotel Amigo.

It all began in 1522 when the property was sold to the city. It used the existing structure as a prison and continued to do so for a long period. As a result, many believe that its name originated from here. In the 16th Century, some Spanish soldiers misunderstood the word vrunt (prison) for vriend, meaning friend, and started calling Amigo, Spanish, for a friend.

Later in the 1950s, the Blanton Family converted the building into a hotel to welcome royalty and visiting nobilities worldwide who came to Brussels for the World's Fair in 1958.

Hotel Amigo continued as a rather uninspired accommodation until the year 2000 when Rocco Forte Hotels acquired and carefully refurbished it to what it is today. With an extensive renovation, designer Olga Polizzi restored the building to its former glory. Her team worked tirelessly to protect its artistic, cultural heritage and enabled Hotel Amigo to reclaim its spot as Brussels' best luxury hotel.

The hotel boasts a great location in Brussels' heart, which is the first thing that captivates tourists' attention. With Brussels Airport about twenty minutes drive away, this business hotel serves as a home away from home for many business travelers.

Moreover, it offers numerous opportunities to explore the city as the area has great public transportation facilities. For example, you can take a trip to the antique district of le Sablon and its popular Notre-Dame du Sablon church from the Central train station. Besides, you can take a taxi from the hotel forecourt to see the many museums and art galleries. There is also the Royal Palace of Brussels and many business centers around the city.

The area is a financial district in the center of Brussels. The main tourist attractions on this area's cobbled streets include a traditional-style Belgian cafe opposite the hotel, the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate merely a block away, and Manneken Pis fountain, a two-minute walk.

Additionally, the resort provides a stylish and central base from where you can explore Brussels' historical heritage along with a modern twist.

Looking at the building from outside, you will never assume that it used to be a jail. Instead, at this Spanish Renaissance yet upscale establishment, you will be ushered inside by an immaculately dressed - top-hat-and-tailed – doormen.

The interior is unfussy, and all about modern-day luxury and convenience - this the guests' living experience is entirely different. Olga Polizzi did justice to her name in this respect. Like local fittings, René Magritte prints, and fixtures, her close attention to details set Amigo apart from other international hotels.
