Places to see in ( Bradford on Avon - UK )

Bradford on Avon is a town and civil parish in west Wiltshire, England. Bradford on Avon canal, historic buildings, shops, pubs and restaurants make it popular with tourists. The history of the town can be traced back to Roman origins. Bradford on Avon has several buildings dating from the 17th century, when the town grew due to the thriving English woollen textile industry.

Bradford on Avon lies partly on the Avon Valley, and partly on the hill that marks the Vale's western edge, eight miles southeast of Bath, in the hilly countryside between the Mendip Hills, Salisbury Plain and the Cotswold Hills. The local area around Bath provides the Jurassic limestone (Bath Stone) from which the older buildings are constructed. The River Avon (the Bristol Avon) runs through the town. Bradford on Avon directly borders Trowbridge to the south east. Bradford on Avon includes the suburbs of Bearfield and Woolley; the parish includes the hamlets of Widbrook and Woolley Green.

Bradford on Avon has been the headquarters of Avon Rubber, a large manufacturer of rubber products for the automotive and other industries. Bradford-on-Avon lies on the A363 Trowbridge to Bath road, which runs through the town from south to north, and crossed over by the B3109 linking Bradford-on-Avon with Melksham and Frome.

Bradford-on-Avon railway station lies on what is now the Bristol—Weymouth railway line. It opened in the mid-19th century and was built by the original (pre-grouping) Great Western Railway. Running parallel to the railway through the town is the Kennet and Avon Canal and Bradford Lock. The use of this canal declined as the railways grew but it was restored to full working order during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Hello and welcome. I hope you enjoy this video. It is 6am in the morning, today we are walking around Bradford on Avon. Bradford on Avon is a town in the west of Wiltshire, in south-west of England. It is quiet now. It can get busy later in the day and is popular with tourists. Bradford on Avon is just over 100 miles drive from central London and can be a two to three hour train journey from Waterloo Station, London. Today we started our walk along the Kennet & Avon canal now we are walking around the old Grade 1 listed Tithe Barn. The barn was built around the 1330s and is one of the largest of its kind. Taxes in the form of goods would have been taken from the towns people and stored in the barn. Originally the barn was owned by Shaftesbury Abbey in 1539 the abbey was dissolved and it became a farm. In the 1970s the barns were purchased by Wiltshire Council. The barn is usually open everyday from 10:30am to 4pm and is free to the public. Check times on the English Heritage website if you plan to visit and would like to go inside. As we carry on we walk over the River Avon that runs through the middle of Bradford on Avon. In the 17th and 18th century the river used to power wool mills, and Bradford on Avon prospered. Later the English woollen industry moved north to Yorkshire and the last mill here closed in 1905. Today the old mills have been converted into shops, restaurants or housing and the river, like the canal, is mainly used for leisure. During the day the you may see rowers or paddle boarders up-and-down the river. We eventually leave the river and head into the centre of town, where we meet the road. The main road through Bradford on Avon can get quite busy, a well used route between the town of Trowbridge and city of Bath. First though we wander down some alley-ways and side-streets coming out at the Holy Trinity Church, built around 1150. When we meet the river again look out for the larger old mill buildings along the side of the river. Bradford on Avon has so many interesting old historic buildings you could spend all day soaking up the history. Movies and TV shows that have been filmed here include: Robin of Sherwood (1984), Creation (2009), Wolf Hall (2015), The White Princess (2017), Amazon Prime’s The Spanish Princess (2019) and Netflix’s Cursed (2020). At the end of our walk we can see the Grade 1 listed Town Bridge. The bridge was originally a narrower packhorse bridge and widened in the 17th century. In 1643 during the English Civil War, Royalists seized control of the bridge on their way to battle. There is a small building on the bridge, originally a chapel, later used as a town lockup (prison cell). Thank you for joining me on this early morning walk and finding out a little bit more about the town. Please do leave a comment, or like the video, it is lovely to hear from people all over the world. If you have never been to Bradford on Avon I hope this video helps you feel a little closer to it. If you have then I hope you enjoyed reminiscing as we walked around. It gives me great pleasure to make places like this accessible to people.

Morning Walk in Bradford-on-Avon

Out and about Walking in Bradford-on-Avon

Today's walk is in the historic town of Bradford-on-Avon in the county of Wiltshire. At the last Census the town had a population of 9,042.

Bradford-on-Avon is located eight miles southeast of Bath. Some of the town's buildings date back to the 17th century. One of the town's popular landmarks is the Lockup which is on Town Bridge. It is said this is where troublesome locals were locked up. The town's historic roots date back as far as Roman times but it was the woolen industry that really kickstarted the growth of the town in terms of buidings & people.

We start the walk on Coppice Hill, then turn right into the Shambles and then cross over into Church Street whilst passing through the grounds of Holy Trinity Church. From there head up torwards Newtown which takes in views of some fabulous floral displays on the frontage of a row of houses. From there we make our way down Conigre Hill back onto Newtown then turn right onto Market Street then right onto Silver Street and then for a short time onto St Margaret's Road before doubling back to walk through by the War Memorial to finish up on Keever Bridge.

This walk felt very atmospheric especially with the beautiful sunrise taking place at the time.
