Places to see in ( Brackley - UK )

Places to see in ( Brackley - UK )

Brackley is a town in south Northamptonshire, England. It is about 19 miles from Oxford and about 22 miles from Northampton. Historically a market town based on the wool and lace trade, it was built on the intersecting trade routes between London, Birmingham and the English Midlands and between Cambridge and Oxford. Brackley has connections with Formula 1 as it is close to Silverstone and home to the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.

Brackley, originally also known as Brachelai or Brackele, was held in 1086 by Earl Alberic. After this it passed to the Earl of Leicester, and to the families of De Quincy and Roland. In the 11th and 12th centuries Brackley was in the Hundred of Odboldistow and in the Manor of Halse. Richard I (The Lionheart) named five official sites for jousting tournaments so that such events could not be used as local wars, and Brackley was one of these. The tournament site is believed to be to the south of the castle where the A422 now passes.

Brackley used the poor house at Culworth until 1834, when Parliament passed the Poor Law Amendment Act and as a result Brackley Poor Law Union was founded.[5] A workhouse for 250 people was built in 1836, southwest of the town on Banbury Road. It was demolished in the 1930s.

Brackley Castle was built soon after 1086. Its earthwork remains lie between Hinton Road and Tesco. It comprised a motte mound 10 feet (3.0 m) high and approximately 44 yards (40 m) in diameter with an outer bailey to the east. Archaeological excavation has revealed evidence of a ditch defining the perimeter of the bailey. Two fishponds originally lay outside the ditch but have subsequently been infilled – however south of St. James Lake may have formed a part of this. Brackley Castle may have gone out of use in 1147. It was destroyed in 1173.

The almshouses were founded in 1633 by Sir Thomas Crewe of Steane. They have one storey plus attic dormers. They were originally six houses but by 1973 they had been converted into four apartments. Brackley Manor House was also a 17th-century Jacobean building that also originally had one storey plus attic dormers. In 1875–78 the Earl of Ellesmere had it rebuilt on a larger scale, in the same style but retaining only the doorway and one window of the original building. It is now Winchester House School, a coeducational preparatory school for children aged from 3–13. It used to be a Woodard School.

Brackley is close to the A43 road, which now bypasses the town, linking it to Towcester and Northampton to the north-east and the M40 motorway to the west. The A422 links it to Banbury and Buckingham. The nearest railway station is Kings Sutton, about 6 miles (10 km) west of the town. Brackley had two railway stations of its own that were closed in the 1960s. Brackley's first station, known in its latter years as Brackley Town, opened in May 1850 as part of the Buckinghamshire Railway's Buckingham and Brackley Junction line between Verney Junction and Banbury Merton Street via Buckingham.

Charming small town in England: Brackley

We found many cozy and picturesque towns in the heart of England. You would adore so many of the good towns there. Despite being little, they are useful, have a vibrant culture, and have a deep history. One benefit of living in England is having access to its many charming, different towns that are dispersed throughout the country. Brackley is a market town and civil parish in West Northamptonshire, England, just on the border with Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Since the old times, it was a market town where people provided the wool and lace trade. it was built on the cross of trade routes between London, Birmingham, the Midlands, Cambridge, and Oxford. Brackley is just next to Silverstone and the place where the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team was started.

Places to visit in the United Kingdom

United Kingdom

I have a puzzle for you. What is in common in Scotland, Wales, Norther Ireland and England? Well not much other than they are one country, the United Kingdom. These four countries offer a unique experience on their own, but together they create a county nothing like any other in the world. The scenery varies from breathtaking steep rigid shores, to lush green pastures, creeks, hills. Beautifully preserved country villages, mansions, castles and cutting edge architecture are all getting on well with each other. The capital is London. An ancient city on the shores of the River Tames. Home to many historical sites such as the Tower Bridge, The parliament with its famous clock tower the Big Ben, The Buckingham Palace, the residence of Queen Elizabeth. Apart from its great historical heritage London is the economical and cultural center of the UK, this includes its bustling social life. When the sun sets the disco fever starts in the Soho, rock bands flood Camden, and hipsters gather in Shoreditch. The old an new entangles in the city's architecture, lifestyle and kitchen.

Places to see in ( Bicester - UK )

Places to see in ( Bicester - UK )

Bicester is a town and civil parish in the Cherwell district of northeastern Oxfordshire in England. This historic market centre is one of the fastest growing towns in Oxfordshire. Development has been favoured by its proximity to junction 9 of the M40 motorway linking Bicester to London, Birmingham and Banbury.

Bicester has good road links to Oxford, Kidlington, Brackley, Buckingham, Aylesbury and Witney, as well as a railway stations on two axes; Bicester North and Bicester Village. Bicester has its own town council, approximately a one quarter of the population hence ward contribution to the District Council and further representation as to different local governmental matters on the County Council.

The other large town in the district is Banbury. In 2014 the Government in concert with the local planning authority planned for Bicester to become a garden city on the basis of the size of its buffers, distance from the Metropolitan Green Belt and in part to accommodate the demand of commuters to London and Oxford. Up to 13,000 new homes will be built.

The town's nearest motorway is the M40 which has two junctions serving Bicester; junction 9 to the south which is an interchange for the A34 towards Oxford and A41 for Bicester and Aylesbury and junction 10 near Ardley to the north with the A43 towards Brackley. Bicester has a ring road which is made up of the A41, A4095, A4421 and the newly completed Vendee Drive which forms part of the B4030.

Bicester benefited from the Railway Mania of the 1840s. The Buckinghamshire Railway completed the railway between Bletchley and Oxford in 1851, opening a neat station at the bottom of the London road in 1850 to serve Bicester. Bicester also has local bus services to Oxford and Banbury, and is served by long-distance route X5 between Oxford and Cambridge. Northampton once ran service 8 as far as Bicester

Bicester is within an hour's drive to three international airports and within 10 miles of the minor London Oxford Airport. Bicester Town Council has its offices in the Garth in the picturesque and award-winning Garth Park. Bicester is in north Oxfordshire 12 miles north of Oxford, near the Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire borders.

There are 5 electoral wards, North, East, South, West and Town as defined by the town council. The areas of Bicester include:

Highfield
Woodfield
King's End
Bure Park
Glory Farm
Southwold
Langford Village
Kingsmere (New housing development)
Elmsbrook (new housing development, eco-town)

Brackley winter van drive-by

Me & Bro driving through Brackley :]

Coventry to Turweston, UK on 10/09/2015.

A personal video presentation about a flight from Coventry Airport to Turweston airfield & return in Almat Aviation's Piper Cherokee Arrow G-TORC on 10 September 2015. Includes footage of places & properties seen during the flights. If it was a bumpy flight, it may be useful to hit the pause button to see clearer images from the flying video footage.

This was my first visit to Turweston and looking back now in 2022 it's interesting to see how far they had got with their new control tower back in 2015. Additionally, note the new housing being constructed as we pass over Brackley. Some later trip videos to Turweston will show how this has developed.

My interest in airfields past and present is always a focus in my videos.

BEWARE: Contains both still and video footage with no verbal commentary. My videos can be lengthy so not suitable for people with no interest in aviation/airfields, the English countryside or who may have a limited attention span.
