BOUILLON, BELGIUM | 5 BEST Things To Do In Bouillon

Bouillon, Belgium is one of the most beautiful small cities in Europe. In this video, we highlight the best things to do in Bouillon so that you can have a great trip and use your time there to the fullest. From walking the city to hiking Tombeau du Geant and visiting the Bouillon Castle, there is so much to do in Bouillon!

At number 5, we recommend walking along the river. The city of Bouillon is situated next to the Semois River, which winds through the rolling hills and has many bends. In fact, Bouillon is nearly an island since the river makes such a wide turn here.

Another great thing to do in Bouillon is visiting the Archéoscope. Here, you will immerse yourself in an interactive exhibit while learning about the history of Bouillon and Godfrey de Bouillon, who the town is named after.

Hiking at Giant’s Tomb right outside the town of Bouillon is also a must. This is one of the most photographed nature spots in all of Belgium for good reason. With a winding view over the iconic Semois River, you will want to make sure and bring your camera to this spot.

For the second best thing to do in Bouillon, we recommend hiking up to the Belvedere Tower. Starting from the base of the castle, you will climb switchbacks up the hill, crossing a couple of beautiful viewpoints on your way.

And in our opinion, the best thing to do in Bouillon is to visit the castle. It is the highlight of the city due to its massive size, unique architecture, and fascinating history. The castle itself was built on top of a giant cliff, giving it a breathtaking size and stature.

Make sure to buy your city pass (15€) to visit the attractions. You can buy it at the Bouillon Castle, Archeoscope or the Ducal Museum.

Enjoy Bouillon in Belgium!

Bouillon, Belgium

Driving around the back roads of Belgium, visiting only “off the beaten path towns”, we stumbled with Bouillon. Thinking the name was funny, not remembering my studies about the Crusades, I went on with a joke in my video, and not until I visited the castle, up above the town, I realized that this Bouillon, and Geoffrey de Bouillon were the same, the first king of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, after the siege and the taking of the holy city. Bouillon declined the title by saying that the real king of Jerusalem was Jesus.
Godfrey was a Frankish knight, Lord of this town, and headed the First Crusade from 1096, until the end of it, 1099, becoming the first king of that region, even though he declined the title for the “protector of Jerusalem”.
He died in Acre according to reports from the Arabs he was besieging, but other chroniclers place his death at Caesarea in June 1100 a.D. Later reports mention that he was poisoned by the emir of the same town.

#7 Bouillon - Belgium ???????? La citadelle de bouillon

Bouillon (Walloon: Bouyon) is a municipality in Belgium. It lies in the country's Walloon Region and Luxembourg Province in the Ardennes. The municipality, which covers 149.09 km², had 5,477 inhabitants, giving a population density of 36.7 inhabitants per km².

Bouillon has a few schools, a collège (middle school) and a lycée (high school), banks and a town square. Bouillon Castle still sits above the town centre, and is a popular tourist attraction.

Bouillon, Belgium - August 2021 Walking Tour

The little city of Bouillon is located in the province of Luxembourg in the Ardennes, Belgium, in a sharp bend of the river Semois, surrounded by lush forest. The municipality covers 149.09 km² and has some 5,477 inhabitants.

In the Middle Ages Bouillon was a lordship within the Duchy of Lower Lorraine and the principal seat of the Ardennes-Bouillon dynasty in the 10th and 11th century. In the 11th century they dominated the area, and held the ducal title along with many other titles in the region. Bouillon was the location of the ducal mint and the dominant urban concentration in the dukes' possession.
The fortification of Bouillon Castle was, along with the County of Verdun, the core of the possessions of the Ardennes-Bouillon dynasty, and their combined territory was a complex mixture of fiefs, allodial land and other hereditary rights throughout the area.

The most famous of the Lords of Bouillon was Godfrey of Bouillon, a leader of the First Crusade and the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. He sold the Bouillon estate to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The prince-bishops started to call themselves dukes of Bouillon, and the town emerged as the capital of a sovereign duchy by 1678, when it was captured from the prince-bishopric by the French army and given to the La Tour d'Auvergne family. The duchy was prized for its strategic location as the key to the Ardennes (as Vauban called it) and hence to France itself. It remained a quasi-independent protectorate, like Orange and Monaco, until 1795, when the Republican Army annexed it to France.

After the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, the city was given to the Netherlands in the 1815 Treaty of Paris. It has been part of Belgium since the Revolution of 1830.

Top 10 Tourist Destinations in Belgium

10. Leuven Town Hall
The Leuven Town Hall looks more like a cathedral than a seat of government, perhaps because the 236 statues that adorn it are set in religious scenes. These statues are on the hall’s three floors, each floor representing different people who were important to the city’s heritage. Built in the mid-15th century, the Gothic style town hall is very ornate, seeming almost lace-like. It anchors the city’s grote markt, or main square, and sits across from St. Peter’s Church.

9. Mons Belfry
Mons is a medieval city that today serves as capital of Hainaut Province. It is home to the only Baroque belfry in Belgium. The belfry is located on the highest point in Mons, on a square that once housed a castle; remains of this castle can be seen today. This bell tower is 87 meters (285 feet) high, with a 49-bell carillon at the top; the largest bell weighs in at five tons. The belfry, constructed in the 17th century, is topped by an onion-shaped dome.

8. Bouillon Castle
Bouillon Castle sits on a hill overlooking the city of Bouillon. It is believed to date back to the Romans, though it is first mentioned in the late 10th century. One of its early owners sold it to finance his participation in the First Crusade. The castle has three drawbridges, dungeons and a torture chamber that visitors will see as they make their way down from the top. The castle, considered one of the best in Belgium, has a unique, layered defense system designed to protect it from invaders.

7. Grote Markt, Mechelen
The Grote Markt in Mechelen is a large square that is the heart of the city; it is the city’s main square. At one end of the pedestrian cobblestone square stands St. Rombold’s Cathedral, the city’s largest church, while the town hall occupies the other end. Restaurants and shops, that once were private homes, complete the other two sides. When the square was getting underground parking in 2004, remnants of a 13th century road were found. Today, the square hosts a market on Saturday mornings.

6. Antwerp Central
Centraal Station is the main train station in Antwerp in Flanders. The stone building, which opened in 1905, presents an imposing façade to travelers. It’s topped by a huge dome that is 44 meters (144 feet) high. The station is considered Belgium’s best example of railway architecture. It also is considered one of the world’s most beautiful train stations. Trains depart and arrive on 14 tracks on four levels. Centraal Station is also capable of handling high speed trains.

5. Tournai Cathedral
Catholicism has been an important religion in the Walloon city of Tournai since the 6th century, though construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady(Notre-Dame de Tournai) did not start until the 12th century. It features three architectural styles: Romanesque, Transitional and Gothic. The cathedral has five bell towers with ceilings that reach up to 157 feet high.

4. Gravensteen
Looking at the 12th century Gravensteen Castle, one can almost picture knights in shining armor riding white horses out the gates. Which wouldn’t be too far off, as the castle was patterned after the ones that the knights saw on the Second Crusade in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries it was used as a prison and factory, with houses built in the courtyard. Scheduled to be demolished, the city of Ghent rescued it in 1885 and renovated it. It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Belgium. Inside is a museum of torture devices used in Ghent over the ages.

3. Belfry of Bruges
Visitors need to be in good physical shape if they want to climb the Belfry of Bruges as it is 366 steep, narrow steps to the top. Those who complete the climb of this important symbol of Bruges will be rewarded with great views of the city. The medieval bell tower dates back to 1240, built at a time when Bruges was a major player in the cloth industry. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire 40 years later, with other fires occurring in the centuries following. Bells still chime out from the tower today.

2. Grand Place
The Grand Place (or Grote Markt) is a must-see for visitors to Brussels. Indeed, this central square is the city’s main landmark. Surrounded by the town hall and guildhalls, the square isn’t very big, as squares around the world go but the old buildings that line its sides make it very special. The Grand Place dates back to the 11th century when markets were held. Nowadays, every two years in August, an enormous “flower carpet” is set up in the Grand Place for a few days. A million colorful begonias are set up in patterns covering a large part of the square.

1. Canals of Bruges
Because of its canals Bruges is often called ‘The Venice of the North’. In the Middle Ages the ‘Reie’ river had been turned into a network of canals that enabled the traders to bring their products to the large Water Halls at the Market. Nowadays a boat ride on these famous canals provide a great way to see some of Bruges most beautiful sites.

JnK visit Dinant and Bouillon, Belgium

August 2019
A few days in Belgium visiting Dinant and Bouillon - both riverside towns. We arrived in Bouillon and couldn't understand why there were so many people about - it soon became apparent that the annual two day medieval festival was taking place!

Summers Story at Bouillon - Belgium
