Penicuik is a town and former burgh in Midlothian, Scotland, lying on the west bank of the River North Esk. It lies on the A701 midway between Edinburgh and Peebles, east of the Pentland Hills. The town was developed as a planned village in 1770 by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik. It became a burgh in 1867. The town was well known for its paper mills, the last of which closed in 2004. More recently the town was home to the Edinburgh Crystal works. Penicuik has two secondary schools, Penicuik High School and Beeslack Community High School. Crystal FM is the Community Radio Station serving Penicuik & S W Midlothian on 107.4
The town's name is pronounced 'Pennycook' and is derived from Pen Y Cog, meaning Hill of the Cuckoo in the Old Brythonic language (also known as Ancient British and the forerunner of modern Welsh). Penicuik is Scotland's 50th largest town and the biggest settlement in Midlothian.
Near Penicuik is Glencorse Parish Kirk, which formed part of the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped (1886). Some of the streets nearby are named after characters in the novel and its sequel, Catriona (1893). Penicuik is home to the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, garrisoned in Glencorse Barracks. Penicuik is twinned with the town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in France. The site of Penicuik was home to the paper mill established by Agnes Campbell in 1709. A monument in the churchyard reads 1737, Annabel Millar spouse to Thomas Rutherford Papermaker at Pennycuik.
Around 1770, the arrival of the Cowan family, and their expansion of the paper mill, led to the need for homes for their workers. The hamlet of Penicuik was expanded as a planned town (roughly based on Edinburgh's New Town) by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik, the builder of nearby Penicuik House, and by 1800 the population had risen to 1,700.
Penicuik was the site of a prison camp for French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars (housed in the old range at Valleyfield Mill). The former camp is now the site of a housing development in Valleyfield. A monument dated 1830 by the River Esk commemorates the mortal remains of 309 prisoners of war who died 1811-14. It was erected by Alexander Cowan owner of the paper mill, whose house overlooked the burial site.
Penicuik hosted the inaugural Grand Match in curling, between the north and the south of Scotland, in 1847. This took place on the high pond on the estate of Penicuik House, not the low pond which is still used for curling on rare occasions. The town became a burgh in 1867. In the oldest part of Penicuik, surrounding the town centre and to the south of the former POW camp, crossing the river Esk is Pomathorn Bridge which was once a toll bridge and the main route between Edinburgh to the north and the Scottish Borders to the south. As such Penicuik has a number of ancient traveller's inns, including The Crown, and the Royal. Because of their location on such a busy caravan route, both these public houses advertise the patronage of many characters from Scottish 18th Century history, including alleged visits from Burke and Hare and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The town is split into four distinct areas: Dalkeith proper with its town centre and historic core, with Eskbank to its west and Woodburn to its east. Eskbank is the well heeled district of Dalkeith with many large Victorian and newer houses. To the south of Eskbank is Newbattle with its abbey. Woodburn is a working class council estate. Dalkeith is the main administrative centre for Midlothian. It is twinned with Jarnac, France. One of the earliest historical references to Dalkeith is found in the Chronicles of Jean Froissart who stayed at Dalkeith Castle for fifteen days. He wrote of the Battle of Otterburn and the death of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas. In 1650, Oliver Cromwell's army came to Dalkeith. His officer General George Monck, was Commander in Scotland, and the government of the country was based out of Dalkeith castle. In the 17th century, Dalkeith had one of Scotland's largest markets in its exceptionally broad High Street. In 1831, Dalkeith was linked to Edinburgh by a railway line that transported coal, minerals, and agricultural produce. St David's Church in Dalkeith. is a Roman Catholic Parish church founded in 1854 by Lady Cecil, the wife of John Kerr, 7th Marquess of Lothian and daughter of Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, 2nd Earl Talbot. After she converted to Catholicism, Lady Cecil of Lothian decided to build a church for the local Catholic population. Joseph Hansom was the church architect and building started in 1853. On 21 May 1854, the church opened and a Father Mackay was the first parish priest. In 1858, he was replaced by a Father J. S. McCorry. In 1860, Lady Cecil invited the Society of Jesus to serve the parish. In 1944, the Jesuits left the parish and handed over administration of the church to the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh who continue to serve the congregation. Robert Smith, born 1722, died February 11, 1777, he was a Scottish born American architect who was based in Philadelphia. Smith's work includes buildings such as Carpenters' Hall, St. Peter's Church, and the steeple on Christ Church. These structures constituted the greater part of the city's early skyline. Other works include Nassau Hall at Princeton University and the Public Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was born in Dalkeith Parish, Midlothian, into a family that included many masons. As a young man he apprenticed in the building trades, and emigrated to America, either directly from Scotland or via London, England, it is unknown, in late 1748.

1. St Andrews Cathedral
St Andrews is thought to be haunted by 2 ghosts, one of which is a friendly monk whom people have encountered on the stairs at St Rule's tower and the other is The beautiful white lady, sightings of her date back over 2 centuries and legend has it, that stonemasons who were repairing the tower, broke into a sealed chamber, inside of which they found various coffins, one of which was open and contained a very well preserved young lady wearing white gloves.
2. Stirling castle
Stirling Castle is apparently haunted by a ghostly Highlander in full costume. various tourists claim to have approached him, mistaking him for a tour guide, only to have him turn around and disappear right before their eyes!
3. The Old Tay Bridge
On the 28th of December 1879 just 2 years after opening, the bridge was hit by an intense storm which weakened its central section causing it to collapse whilst a train was crossing, all the passengers died. It is said that every year on the 28th of December a ghostly train can been seen crossing where the old bridge stood and disappearing where it collapsed.
4. Edinburgh Castle
Thought to be one of the most haunted places in Scotland, from former prisoners haunting the dungeons to the headless drummer who was first sighted in 1650. many people have heard the sound of him drumming but seeing him physically is rare and rumoured to foretell of danger.
5. Skaill House
It is said that Skaill house was built on a Pictish burial ground and that this accounts for the strange sightings and occurrences. Ghostly figures, voices in empty rooms, noises and sudden wafts of smoke all contribute to its haunted fame and popularity with the tourists.
6. Eilean Donan Castle
This castle is apparently haunted by a Spanish soldier who was killed in the first Jacobite rebellion in 1719. But he's not the castles only claim to supernatural fame as there have also been sightings of Lady Mary in one of the castles bedrooms.
7. Crathes castle
Supposedly haunted by the spirit of The Green Lady This apparition is apparently a servant girl in a green robe who went missing shortly after giving birth. In the 1800's skeletal remains were found hidden behind the fireplace in the room where The Green Lady has been sighted.
8. Dunrobin castle
A ghostly young woman has been heard and seen in the seamstress's room in the castle. legend has it that she was imprisoned by the Earl of Sutherland who intended to marry her. Whilst trying to escape the room ,using a rope made of sheets, she fell to her death. visitors claim they still hear sounds of her crying coming from the room.
9. Culloden Battlefield
This is where the Jacobite Rebellion ended, in just 40 minutes, thousands of clansmen were slaughtered. Their cries, sword clashes and gunfire apparently can still be heard and one highlander is rumoured to be haunting the area murmuring the word defeated under his breath.
10. Glencoe
Infamous Glencoe in 1692 bore witness to the massacre of the MacDonald Clan whilst they slept in their beds. people have claimed to hearing their screams and even witnessing a re-enactment of the slaughter, especially on the anniversary of the event.
