S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!

On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

S1 – Ep 369 – Durban – The Renowned Beachfront was a Nostalgic Delight!

We took a short drive from Amanzimtoti to Durban and our anticipation for revisiting the city after so many years was palpable, only to be met with an unexpected amount of traffic. Navigating through the bustling harbour was a captivating experience, as massive trucks diligently transported their cargo. The drive along the renowned beachfront was a nostalgic delight, evoking a rush of fond memories. The enduring beauty of Durban's beachfront was heartening to witness. While our exploration of Mini Town was enjoyable, the inability to access uShaka Marine World proved a disappointment. With this, we commenced a lengthy journey to Kloof, where we found solace in the captivating charm of the area which made for a picturesque overnight stay. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #durban #kloof #minitown #ushakamarineworld

S1 – Ep 274 – Upington – On the Banks of the Mighty Orange River!

When we arrived in Upington we had to cross the mighty Orange River once again on this trip. We headed to the Kalahari Mall to get pasta for dinner and we went directly to our accommodation where we spent the evening. This place was like paradise with beautiful gardens and water features. The next morning we went straight to the Police Station where we wanted to see the camel statue with the policeman on its back. There is a great story behind this which we explain in the video. Then we spent some time at Sakkie se Arkie campsite which is on the banks of the river. It was then time to go to the museum and the donkey sculpture which was another fascinating visit. We will definitely have to come and see Upington again. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #upington #orangeriver

S1 – Ep 344 – Kimberley – The Impressive Sentimental Journey which Surprised us!

Our visit to Kimberley began with a late arrival, but we wasted no time and dropped off our bags before heading out for dinner. The Mohawk Spur provided a delightful dining experience with delicious food. We knew that Kimberley had so much to offer, so we carefully selected a few places to explore the following morning. We marveled at the Cecil John Rhodes statue, paid our respects at the war memorials, and were left in awe by the breathtaking Anglican Cathedral, its size truly mind-blowing. A sentimental journey took us to St Patrick's CBC, where my father and uncle had attended school years ago. The impressive institution surprised us with its greatness. Of course, our visit wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the iconic Big Hole, a colossal highlight that left us amazed. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kimberley

S1 – Ep 350 – Hartswater – A Touching Monument Honouring Women!

Our trip to Hartswater was truly memorable and welcoming. The Poplar trees lining the road, a unique sight found and the longest of its kind in the world, created a picturesque drive. The small, adorable church at the town's entrance was a touching monument honouring women who played a significant role during the depression and when the Vaalharts Water Scheme began. As we explored further, the bustling activity in the town was heartening to witness, and we were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a lively golf tournament at the town's Golf Course. The schools and sports facilities were in excellent condition, a testament to the town's dedication to maintaining their community. Even in the church they were sanding down the pews for varnishing before the next service. Hartswater left a lasting impression of a functional agricultural town filled with hardworking and caring individuals, making our visit truly special. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #hartswater

Bloemhof dam from above

This is an aerial video of Bloemhof Dam and Sandveld Nature Reserve taken with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision +

Bloemhof Dam is a dam in South Africa. It was originally known as the Oppermansdrif Dam when under construction during the late 1960s. It is located at the confluence of the Vaal River and the Vet River, on the border between the North West, and Free State, provinces of . The dam wall is very long with a total length of 4 270 m. The reservoir is very shallow, and therefore needs a large area to mean anything for water storage. The area around the reservoir (dam), has been a protected area, but because it lies on the border between provinces, these became two separate nature reserves. On the North West Province side lies the Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve, on the Free State side is the Sandveld Nature Reserve.

The town named Bloemhof lies on the North West side of the Vaal River.

The dam was commissioned in 1970, has a capacity of 1,269,000,000 cubic metres (4.48×1010 cu ft), and an area of 223 square kilometres (86 sq mi), the wall is 33 metres (108 ft) high. It is fed with the outflow from the Vaal dam (located upstream near Heidelberg) as well as rain collected in the Vaal-, Vet-, Vals- and Sandriver catchment areas.

Orange River and Vaal River Confluence by Drone

South Africa's two greatest rivers, the Vaal and the Orange converge just outside the small town of Douglas in the Northern Cape. Here's some drone footage from a visit I paid a visit there earlier this year. Both rivers were very full, notice the difference in colour and also how much slower the Vaal's flow is than the Orange.

From here, South Africa's longest river still has another 900 km before it reaches the Atlantic ocean at Alexander Bay, on the border with Namibia.

Johannesburg 4K - The City of Gold - Driving Downtown - South Africa

Saturday evening drive around Johannesburg South Africa, known as the City of Gold for its mineral rich surroundings, home to large-scale gold and diamond trades. If you're in Cape Town, don't forget to take an inexpensive 1 hour flight to Johannesburg! South Africans' speak English, Afrikaans (a language of southern Africa, derived from the form of Dutch brought to the Cape by Protestant settlers in the 17th century, and an official language of South Africa), Xhosa, and Zulu. Pro Tip. Write down 10 basic phrases from each language in your mobile phone note pad. It makes traveling so much easier. The locals always appreciate talking with someone who takes the time to learn a few phrases in their language.
Starting Point: .
Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest city and capital of Gauteng province, began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. Its sprawling Soweto township was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now the Mandela House museum. - Google

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or The City of Gold, is the largest city in South Africa, classified as a megacity, and is one of the 100 largest urban areas in the world. According to Demographia, the Johannesburg-Pretoria urban area (combined because of strong transport links that make commuting feasible) is the 26th-largest in the world, with 14,167,000 inhabitants. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. Johannesburg is the seat of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa. Most of the major South African companies and banks have their head offices in Johannesburg. The city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of large-scale gold and diamond trade. It was one of the host cities of the official tournament of the 2010 FIFA World Cup – and it hosted the final.

The city was established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what had been a farm. Due to the extremely large gold deposit found along the Witwatersrand, within ten years, the population had grown to 100,000 inhabitants.

A separate city from the late 1970s until 1994, Soweto is now part of Johannesburg. Originally an acronym for South-Western Townships, Soweto originated as a collection of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg, populated mostly by native African workers from the gold mining industry.

The metropolis is an alpha global city as listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. In 2019, the population of the city of Johannesburg was 5,635,127, making it the most populous city in South Africa. In the same year, the population of Johannesburg's urban agglomeration was put at 8,000,000. Land area of the municipal city (1,645 km2 or 635 sq mi) is large in comparison with those of other major cities, resulting in a moderate population density of 2,364 per square kilometre (6,120/sq mi).

Welcome to episode 1 of my brand new YouTube channel. My name is Jaco and I want to take you to different resorts / campsites in South Africa.
In this video I am visiting Maselspoort (Est. 1935), a popular resort near Bloemfontein in Central South Africa.

I also have an adventure motorcycle which I will travel with, so whether you enjoy camping with your caravan or roughing it in a tent you are welcome here. Bikers are also included to join me on my adventures.
I decided to start this channel so that I can give you an overview of resorts / campsites, and that I can maybe help to get lesser known resorts / campsites on the map.
The first few videos may not be perfect because I am very new to editing, but please be patient with me, I promise it will get better.
I apologize that this first video is so long, but I had to introduce myself properly and make one or two disclaimers, but now that it is out of the way I can just focus on making interesting and informative videos in the future.
I hope you find my videos helpful and that you will consider subscribing and give me a thumbs up. Please share this video with other people who also love the outdoors and camping, and you are welcome to leave me any positive feedback in the comments.
Resort / camp site owners or managers are welcome to contact me if you would like me to visit your resort and make a similar video.
I will also include drone footage whenever I am allowed to fly my drone.
