Belgium is a really interesting country to visit.
There are still at least 30 different languages in the EU and French and Dutch are the main languages spoken as well as some German, particularly in the east.
Most younger people in larger towns and cities across Europe speak English as their second language, however in the rural areas sometimes not a lot of English is spoken, particularly by older people.
There are around 13 different currencies in the EU however the Euro has been the Belgian currency since around 2002.
Belgium covers an area of 30,688 km2 and has a population of more than 11.4 million.
Vignettes are not required for driving on the Belgium road networks however there are some toll roads.
Credit cards are accepted widely in Belgium, however, some vendors only accept Visa but not Mastercard, or vice versa.
There are different rules regarding “parking” and “camping” – many countries allow “overnight parking” as long as you don't camp there – the definition of “camping” is if you set up anything outside of your vehicle eg tables and chairs, and or BBQ, and or put up your sun awning and or position your vehicle on levelling ramps etc – then that is classified as camping.

Belgium - Brussels and Bruges
During our European vacation in 2018, we spent three days and two nights in Belgium. The Eurostar train left London at 6:47am. The ride was smooth and comfortable. At 150mph, you hardly feel like you are moving.
Brussels was the first stop for a few hours. Stored out backpacks at the train station and met in the main square for a walking tour. After the tour, we had some fries and headed back to the train station for the next train the Bruge.
We sat with a young local on the train who was commuting from work in Brussels to Ghent and had a very nice conversation. The hosts at the Speelmansrei Bed & Breakfast were awesome and would recommend them! Exploring the city, parks and churches and enjoying the great food and beer took care of the next couple days.

My wife and I spent 23 days in Europe visiting 7 countries in 2018. Planning began about 8 months before the trip. The goal was to see as much as we could but at a slow pace. Visiting 7 countries in 23 days sounds like a lot but we did not feel that way during the trip. One way to use time efficiently during travel is to utilize the night trains. We took two trips between countries on an overnight train. This allowed for us to combine travel and lodging in the same time period.
Utilizing travel hacking allowed us to save money on air fare and some lodging. The flights from Chicago, Illinois to London, England were purchased with airline miles and some lodging was purchased with hotel points. Traveling light was a priority for us as we each had one backpack. This was a fantastic way to go. It was so easy to navigate on and off trains and walk to all our destinations.
We used AirBnB in Prague and it was great. The place was perfect and the host was very nice and helpful. If you have not tried Airbnb, Save $40 off your first stay with my Airbnb referral link . In addition, there was no extra cost to text or use data with our cell phones in any of the countries we visited. Prior to our European trip we switched cell phone providers to Google Fi. The connectivity was great and we had a small fee for a phone call or two that we made. If you are interested in Google Fi, Get a $20 credit with my Google Fi referral link . One final expense saving tip to save on ATM fees. This is always a concern for people traveling in foreign countries. Our first order of business when arriving in a new country was to find an ATM and withdraw some currency. By utilizing the Fidelity cash management debit card. Bezoek een van de vele kastelen, wist je dat er meer kastelen zijn in België per vierkante kilometer dan in welk ander land ook ter wereld? Het kasteel van Chimay is zeker een bezoekje waard
Meer geschiedenis? België heeft veel geleden tijdens de eerste en de tweede wereldoorlog. Er zijn veel herdenkingsplaatsen en musea gewijd aan deze duistere periodes in de Europese geschiedenis. Bezoek Zonnebeke of Bastogne.

Een aantal jaar geleden heb ik mij als doel gesteld om alle Belgische gemeenten te bezoeken en zo mijn eigen land beter te leren kennen. Het heeft mij plekjes laten zien die ik anders nooit gekend zou hebben en dit heeft mij gemotiveerd dit met jullie te delen. Deze video’s kan je bekijken op mijn ander kanaal Eileens Wanderlust.
BLEGNY MINE KOLENMIJN - Sony HX20V
BLEGNY MINE KOLENMIJN
Gelegen tussen Luik en Maastricht, Blegny-Mijn is één van de vier authentieke koolmijnen van Europa waar de ondergrondse galerijen nog toegangelijk zijn voor de bezoekers.
In Blegny begon de exploitatie van de steenkool in de 15e eeuw, onder impuls van de monniken van de abdij van Val-Dieu. De steenkoolmijn van Argenteau-Trembleur, op het grondgebied van Blegny, is de laatste steenkoolconcessie in het Noorden van het Luikse Bekken. De mijn werd definitief gesloten op 31 maart 1980, maar in 1978 was er al besloten om het gehele complex om te vormen tot toeristische site.
Kenmerkend voor deze steenkoolmijn is dat ze niet zo diep is als de andere Waalse steenkoolmijnen. Sommige lagen komen zelfs aan de oppervlakte in de omliggende velden.
Helaas was de mijn gesloten tijdens ons bezoek. Ondanks dit gemis is er genoeg te zien op en rondom de mijn.

A tour of some of the major UNESCO World Heritage mining sites in Wallonia, southern Belgium. It's hard to believe these days that Belgium was once the most industrialised nation in Europe with hundreds of coalmines across the landscape, but it's true. Today very little remains, with relics like the Bois-du-Luc mine and the Grand-Hornu mine that we visited on our travels.
