Trier, Germany - World Heritage Journeys
As one of Germany’s oldest cities, Trier was a Roman colony from the 1st century AD. It became one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy at the end of the 3rd century, when it was known as the ‘second Rome’. Its architectural achievements, like the massive Porta Nigra—the largest Roman gate north of the Alps—are reminders of its past grandeur.
Inscribed as a UNESCO site in 1986, Trier boasts one of the largest collections of preserved Roman buildings outside of Rome – an outstanding testimony to this ancient civilisation.

Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Founded more than 2000 years ago, Trier was even once the capital of the Roman Empire. The city is famous for Porta Nigra, Roman bathhouses and for its location along the Moselle River. Ready for a cool weekend trip?
Porta Nigra is the landmark of Trier. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. If you take the stairs, you'll get a panoramic view of the city of Trier. From here you can walk directly to the main market square in the old town.
Nearby is Trier Cathedral. It is the oldest church in Germany. It combines architectural styles from all epochs since the ancient world. The most important relic in the cathedral is the Holy Rock.
Passing the Palais, you come to the Imperial Baths. Today, they are only ruins left. Further out, you can look over the vineyards and the Moselle from the Petrisberg.
If you're in Trier for more than a day, it's definitely worth taking a trip into the surrounding countryside. We stayed for 2 days at the Landal Hochwald holiday park (ad) for a few relaxing days. Bitburg (German pronunciation: [ˈbɪtˌbʊʁk] ; French: Bitbourg; Luxembourgish: Béibreg [ˈbəɪbʀəɕ]) is a city in Germany, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate approximately 25 km (16 mi.) northwest of Trier and 50 km (31 mi.) northeast of Luxembourg city. The American Spangdahlem Air Base is nearby.
== History ==
The city's name derives from its Celtic toponym, Beda.
Bitburg originated approximately 2,000 years ago as a stopover for traffic from Lyon through Metz and Trier to Cologne. The first name mentioned was Vicus Beda. Emperor Constantine the Great expanded the settlement to a road castle around 330, the central part of which forms the town centre today. Bitburg is first documented only after the end of the Roman Empire around 715 as castrum bedense. It subsequently became part of Franconia.
The first mention of Bitburg in historic annals occurred in connection with the signing in 1239 of the Trier-Luxembourg Treaty between Archbishop Theoderich II of Trier and Countess Ermesinde II of Luxemburg, under which the town came under the archbishopric's protection. Bitburg received a town charter in 1262 from Count Henry V of Luxembourg.
In 1443, Bitburg came under the sway of the Duchy of Burgundy, then in 1506 was acquired by the Austrian Netherlands, which controlled most of modern Belgium. In 1794 the city came under French administration, and in 1798 became part of the newly created Département des Forêts. This led to a short lived economic upturn, and Bitburg received among other things a court and a land registry.
In 1815, under agreements at the Congress of Vienna following the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, Bitburg was, after having been a part of the Duchy of Luxembourg for centuries, transferred to the Kingdom of Prussia, where until 1822 it belonged administratively to the province of Lower Rhine, and afterwards to the Rhine province. With the unification of Germany under Prussian dominance in 1871, Bitburg became part of the German Empire, and ...

– Bitburg - Stadtportrait über den Mittelpunkt des Bitburger Landes mit Sehenswürdigkeiten, Wissenswertes und Geschichte.
Das moselfränkische Bitburg ist die Kreisstadt des Eifelkreises Bitburg-Prüm und mit etwa 13.000 Einwohnern einer der größten Orte der Eifel.
Die Stadt wurde um Christi Geburt als Station eines alten Handelsweg von Metz über Trier nach Köln gegründet und um 330 als Vicus Beda (das Wort ist zurückzuführen auf das latainische Wort Betula = Birke) von den Römern zu einem Straßenkastell ausgebaut, welches sich noch heute auf dem Stadtplan widerspiegelt. Nach den Römer und den Franken kam Bitburg im 10. Jahrhundert zur Grafschaft Luxemburg, wozu die Stadt gut vierhundert Jahre gehörte. Danach wurde sie über Vererbungen und Eroberungen spanisch, österreich-niederländisch und schließlich französisch, bis der Wiener Kongress 1815 Bitburg dem Königreich Preußen zuschlug.
Luftangriffe im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörten die Stadt zu 85 %. Die Franzosen übernahmen die Nachkriegsverwaltung und 1985 wurden die Kasernen ein Nato-Stützpunkt. Das Stadtleben wurde also gut fünfzig Jahre von den stationierten Soldaten geprägt, die auch ein wichtiger Wirtschaftsfaktor für Bitburg waren. Heute lebt die Stadt von großen Gewerbegebieten und natürlich von der weltbekannten Bitburger Brauerei, die den Namen der Stadt seit 1817 durch das berühmte Bitburger Pils in die Welt hinausgeträgt. Seit 1883 wird es nach Pilsner Brauart hergestellt. Die sehenswerte Marken-Erlebniswelt der Brauerei zieht jährlich zigtausende Bierfans aus ganz Europa an.
Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt gehört das Museum für den wohl bekanntesten Maler der Eifel Franz von Wille im Haus Beda, einige wiederhergestellte Reste der alten Stadtmauer und das Heimatmuseum.
Das Freizeit- und Erholungsbad Cascade mit Saunalandschaft ist über die Region hinaus ein bekanntes Ziel.

Exploring MEDIEVAL Germany + BREWERY AND WINERY!
Day 2 vlog of my first European River Cruise tour along the Moselle River with Avalon Waterways. Today brought us to Bernkastel to explore an adorable, medieval German town- where of course I had to have a traditional German pretzel and beer. Then, I headed to the Bitburg Brewery for one of the best brewery tours I have ever been on. It was very hands-on and you learn so much about the German beer making process. Then, at night, we sailed over to Traben Trarbarch for the best winery tour and tasing I have ever done- WOW! I had a day packed full of amazing activities.
One of my absolute favorite parts about cruising in Europe is the adorable, small, non-touristy towns we were able to stop in. It seriously made me feel like I was experiencing Germany like a local. In addition, I was surprised how busy and packed full of activities Europe River Cruises are - I had no idea we were going to be exploring so much!
