Places to see in ( Billingshurst - UK )

Billingshurst is a village and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. The village lies 8 miles south-west of Horsham, and 5.6 miles north-east of Pulborough. Billingshurst is located on the A29 road (the Roman Stane Street), at a point where the A272 road forms a crossroads with it. The civil parish has a land area of 7,952 acres (3,219 hectares). In the 2001 census 6,531 people lived in 2,677 households, of whom 3,451 were economically active. At the 2011 Census the population had increased to 8,232. The village's name probably came from Anglo-Saxon Billinges hyrst = Billa's son's wooded hill.

The village has a secondary school and a sixth form college, known together as The Weald School. Billingshurst Primary School (formerly two separate infant and junior schools, until a decision was taken in 2009 and implemented in 2010 to combine them into one) is situated near to The Weald.

The Weald School site contains a leisure centre with swimming pool and gym which is open to the public. A new sports area, Jubilee Fields, contains football pitches, two cricket pitches and pavilion, a fishing lake, and an exercise (trim trail) path. In the last year a new skatepark has also been added. Other facilities in the village include a tennis club and a lawn bowling club.

Billingshurst lies on the junction of the A29 and the A272 which are routes to Petworth, Petersfield, Haywards Heath, Pulborough and Bognor Regis. Billingshurst railway station, located on Station Rd. in Billingshurst, is on the main line from London Victoria to Bognor Regis and Chichester. It would take about 20 minutes to get to Crawley by train.

The village is near the Wey and Arun Canal, which waterway has not been fully navigable since the 1890s. Approximate travelling times by car from the larger towns and cities near Billingshurst are 35 minutes to Guildford, 30 minutes to Crawley and Chichester, 25 minutes to Haslemere and 35 minutes to Haywards Heath.

Billingshurst has five churches. St Mary's Church (Church of England) is the largest, with a mix of service styles, ranging from Book of Common Prayer communion services to informal family worship. Other churches are St Gabriel's Church (Catholic), Billingshurst Family Church (Evangelical; part of the Newfrontiers family of churches) and Trinity Church (United Reformed). Billingshurst Unitarian Chapel, set back behind the High Street, was founded in 1754 and is one of southeast England's oldest Nonconformist places of worship.

Places to see in ( Tenterden - UK )

Places to see in ( Tenterden - UK )

Tenterden is a town with a large conservation area in the Ashford District of Kent, England. It stands on the edge of the remnant forest The Weald, overlooking the valley of the River Rother. It was a member of the Cinque Ports Confederation.

Its riverside today is not navigable to large vessels and its status as a wool manufacturing centre has been lost. Tenterden has several voluntary organisations, some of which are listed below, seven large or very old public houses within its area and has long distance walking and cycling routes within its boundaries. The town's name is derived from the Old English Tenet Waraden, meaning a den or forest clearing in the forest which belonged to the men of Thanet.

The first record of dwellings in Tenterden can be found in a charter which mentions that it, as 'Heronden', began to grow from the 14th century around the strong local wool industry. Unlike other such centres in the Weald it had the advantage of access to the sea. Much of what is now Romney Marsh was under water, and ships docked at nearby Smallhythe. Timber from the Wealden forests was used to construct ships, and in 1449 Tenterden was incorporated into the Confederation of Cinque Ports as a limb of Rye. Ships built in the town were then used to help Rye fulfil its quota for the Crown.

In 1903, Tenterden Town railway station was opened. It closed in 1954, but half of it reopened in 1974 as the Kent and East Sussex Railway. The route starts at Tenterden Town Station and finishes at Bodiam station, near Bodiam Castle. The main line track is being extended to Robertsbridge (near Hastings) in East Sussex.

Tenterden is a nodal centre with routes radiating to Rolvenden and Hastings (A28), Wittersham and Rye (B2082), Appledore and New Romney (B2080), Woodchurch and Hamstreet (B2067) and Ashford and Maidstone (A28/A262). Tenterden has no mainline railway station, with the nearest being Headcorn (9 miles) and Ashford International (12 miles).

Tenterden's broad, tree-lined High Street offers a selection of shopping facilities, making the town an important destination for a number of smaller towns and villages in the area. It has a busy town centre which is home to many small boutiques and antique shops, as well as craft shops, book shops and various banks, side by side with larger national retailers. There is also a large Tesco which is accessible to pedestrians from the High Street (and by vehicles from Smallhythe Road), and a Waitrose store accessed by pedestrians from Sayers Lane (with vehicular access from Recreation Ground Road).

Billingshurst Level Crossing

Thursday May 18th 2023 at 14.05 and 14.12. The 13.29 Bognor Regis to London Victoria (15.17) train and from the other side the 13.15 Portsmouth and Southsea to Horsham (14.17) train and the 14.03 Horsham to Bognor Regis (14.46) train. Came here in 2011 when it was a very unusual single track crossing due the roadway being restricted by a signal box and steps to the footbridge. I was just thinking that had I known it would be so drastically changed I would have also filmed it from the other side when my film from the other side came up: with a perfect view of the signal box. It is now on display at the Amberley Museum. Strange that the crossing was made like that. Maybe it was a very quiet road but so were many places. 668 people a day used the station before Covid. The young man getting food waited twice.

A361 Highway???????? || Barnstaple || 4K || ????????UK

The A361 is an A class road in England and at 195 miles (314 km) is the longest 3 digit A road in the UK. It runs south from Ilfracombe on the north Devon coast to Barnstaple, turning south-east to Tiverton then, after a break (the M5 connects the two sections), north east from Taunton in Somerset through Street and Glastonbury, along the bottom of the Mendip Hills through Shepton Mallet, past Frome and then into Wiltshire through Trowbridge, Devizes, Avebury and Swindon. It then runs through the eastern Cotswolds, via Lechlade, Burford and Chipping Norton and on through Banbury and Daventry before terminating at its junction with the A5 road at the village of Kilsby on the Northamptonshire-Warwickshire border near Rugby. Despite its length, most of the road is non-primary and relatively unimportant.

SWC Free Walk 167, Chichester to West Wittering, 8/7/13.

This was a lovely 12.5 miles of walking from the cathedral city of Chichester to the West Sussex resort of West Wittering.
Utilising the 'New Lipchis Way', the walker is soon passing the old basin in Chichester and walking along the pleasant Chichester Ship Canal, which is still used by pleasure craft as far as the village of Donnington. Beyond here, the canal is more overgrown, but this provides a home to more wildlife; indeed, as the walker enters the marina, the least interesting part of the walk, it even provides a watery home to a number of humans!
After the canal enters Chichester harbour, the path moves inland slightly for lunch in the village of West Ichenor.
Thereafter, it was much quieter, and very pleasant walking along the shoreline, often under welcome tree cover on this very hot day. Several miles later, the walker arrives at the National Trust's East Head, a classic sand dune spit.
Then, it's along West Wittering's busy (even on a non-school holiday Monday!) expanse of sandy beach, prior to a small detour back into the village for a bus back to Chichester.
(Though technical difficulties were experienced with the handicam today, it was possible to film some glimpses of the cathedral's famous resident, the Peregrine Falcon! A real bonus to what was a delightful day's walking!).

Exploring MICKLEHAM in THE SURREY HILLS

I am out exploring the hidden Gems, Oddities and English Villages in the County of Surrey and in this Vlog, I visit the ancient Village of Mickleham in The Surrey Hills. The Village lies near to the old Roman Road known as Stane Street and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Michelham’ and ‘Micleham’. It was partly held by Nigel from the Bishop of Bayeux and partly by Oswald from (under) Richard de Tonbridge. In later years, the Village had connections with The French Revolution...

Bell Ringing at Pulborough, West Sussex

Pulborough, West Sussex, S Mary. 8, 14-0-18 (719 kg) in F♯. (723.5 hz)

Footage taken on Francesco's outing to the area, 16/10/2021

Pulborough! This is the tower I learnt to ring at all the way in 2016! It's a lovely church, in a nice spot in the village. The ringing room is accessed by a spiral staircase, the ringing room is lovely, with lots of light and quite big. The 8 bells handle very well and sound good, thanks to being retuned in 2005 by Taylors. Also, when they were restored, the old 4th (cast in 1636 by Brian II Eldridge) is a protected bell and couldn't be retuned and is tonally poor, therefore the new 4th was cast. Another recent addition was in 2012, when the old 6th (Cast in 1754 by Lester & Pack, same year and foundry as the 7th) cracked during ringing just before Christmas 2011. A new bell was cast by Taylors to replace it. There is a recording of the bells before restoration on Bill Hibbert's website, but I cannot find any recording in-between 2005 and 2012! It was a great start to the day, we produced some good ringing here, including Raising the Front 4 and the Back 4 in peal, Call Changes, Plain Hunt and Grandsire Triples. The next towers will be uploaded within the next week or two! Thanks for watching!

Many thanks to Euan for allowing me to take advantage of his wide angle lens throughout the day!

At worthing station England

At worthing Train station England.

Worthing railway station is the largest of the five stations serving the town of Worthing in West Sussex (The other stations being East Worthing, West Worthing, Durrington-on-Sea and Goring-by-Sea). It is 10 miles 46 chains (17.0 km) down the line from Brighton. The station is managed by Southern, who operate the majority of trains serving it; Great Western Railway and Thameslink who only run a handful of services per day during peak hours. It is one of the main stations on the West Coastway Line; all timetabled trains stop here.

Southern

Railway Approach, Worthing BN11 1UR, United Kingdom.

SWC Free Walk 14, Pulborough Circular. 10/6/13.

Back to Pulborough again for another glorious 13 mile circular.
From the station, it's familiar terrain, but in reverse, to Stopham Bridge. Crossing both The Arun and The Rother, it's then on along an abandoned canal to the medieval Greatham Bridge. After a short section along the banks of The Arun, the walker is then crossing the delightful Amberley Wild Brooks for lunch in the pretty village of Amberley.
Thereafter, it's along The West Sussex Literary Trail and a minor road to Parham Park, with it's brown-coated fallow deer. Then, on past past an airfield, across Wiggonholt Common and so to the RSPB visitor centre, which offers some fine views across Pulborough Brooks.
The finale goes past Wiggonholt's delightful little church, then alongside The Arun across the brooks and so back into Pulborough.
A lovely walk, with lots of variety amidst beautiful surroundings, though clearly one to avoid after heavy rain.
