Belém is the gateway to the Amazon. We chose to bring our kids here because this is where my husband Chris served a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Chris learned Portuguese, taught the people, ate the food and lived like a native. Chris’s love for Brazil started here. This is the point where the fresh river water flows into the ocean. We are a family of Americans with 5 kids. We have actually lived in Salvador, Bahia Brazil for almost 2 years now. Our goal is to see as much of this beautiful country as possible.

Belém, capital of the state of Pará, is a port city and gateway to Brazil’s lower Amazon region. Ver-o-Peso is a vast, open-air market on the water selling Amazonian fish, fruit and handicrafts.Many of Belém's European-style buildings were constructed during the Amazon rubber boom of the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Among them are the neoclassical Theatro da Paz, a venue for symphonic concerts and opera. The Museu Emílio Goeldi, founded in 1866, explores the nature and cultures of the Amazon region. The Estação das Docas, a renovated warehouse complex overlooking the river, features bars, restaurants and music venues, and is a starting point for boat tours. Belém also has many green spaces, such as Praça da República square, mango tree–lined streets and the Bosque Rodrigues Alves botanic garden.
Weather and Events:
Belém has a tropical climate, and is hot and humid year-round. Heavy rain is common Jan–May, including during the traditional Carnaval festivities (dates vary, Feb/Mar). The Círio de Nazaré (Oct) is a huge religious procession, attracting Christian pilgrims from all over Brazil who come to honor a sacred statue of the Virgin Mary.

Belém , often called Belém do Pará [ 7 ] ( region initially called Mairi , [ 8 ] Portuguese topology: Feliz Lusitânia ) is a Brazilian municipality and capital of the state of Pará , [ 9 ] founded on January 12, 1616 as the Portuguese colonial village Feliz Lusitânia by Captain Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco, on the shores of Guajará Bay and Guamá River, in the North region of Brazil[ 10 ] atlatitude01º27'21southandlongitude48º30'16west. [ 11 ] being about 2 120 kmfrom the federal capitalBrasilia. [ 12 ]
The municipality is formed by two parts: the continental area and the Insular area composed of forty-two islands (which are 65% of its territory). Due to being part of the Eastern Amazon, it results in a hot humid climate and in the rainiest capital of Brazil. It is the most populous municipality in Pará and the second in the North [ 13 ] with a population of 1,506,420 inhabitants. [ 14 ] [ 15 ] Classified as one of the capitals with the best quality of life in the North of Brazil, with an HDI of 0.746 (high), [ 5 ] occupying the 22nd position in the ranking ofHDI per capital . [ 14 ] [ 16 ]
In its 400 years of history, Belém has experienced moments of fullness, such as: its transformation into a tax warehouse in the 17th century , which supervised trade between the Amazon and Europe in a privileged strategic position; In the 19th century, the opening of the Amazonian rivers to international traders took place, contributing to a new development of the capital; the golden period of rubber in the 20th century , receiving European immigrants who influenced the architecture and local economy, being known at the time as “Tropical Paris” and “Francesinha do Norte” [ 17 ] becoming cosmopolitanand modern in several aspects [ 18 ] without losing the traditionality of the facades of colonial buildings . [ 19 ] [ 20 ] In the last two decades, it underwent a strong movement towards verticalization, due to new trends in civil construction and the urban plan of the 1940s in Avenida Presidente Vargas . [ 21 ]
The city exerts significant influence as a regional metropolis , covering more than eight million people in the states of Pará, Amapá and part of Maranhão , whether from a cultural , economic or political point of view . [ 22 ] [ 23 ] It has important and historic fortifications , churches , monuments , parks and museums , such as: Theatro da Paz , Emílio Goeldi Museum , Mangal das Garças Park ,Ver-o-Peso , Feliz Lusitânia and, [ 24 ] cultural and religious events of great repercussion such as the Círio de Nazaré . BELÉM, BRAZIL - The state of Pará in the northern part of Brazil, still located in the Amazon jungle, is one of the most gorgeous and food rich states of Brazil. Along with massive river fish, one of the main foods grown in and around Belem is açaí (acai), the small berries from the acai palm tree. #Brazil #AmazonRainforest #acai
Before going across the river to a harvest açaí (acai) and for a full Amazon jungle food meal, we stopped at the Belem market and bought a chunk of fihote, a type of Amazon catfish.
We met up with our friends, and took the boat to Cumbu island, to meet with relatives of Lana, who arranged for us to have an entire açaí (acai) food experiences.
When you think about açaí (acai), unless you’re from Belem, you probably think about a sweet fruit bowl covered with fruits, and possibly some granola mixed in. That’s all I knew about acai before coming to Belem. But in the state of Para, acai is eaten totally different. The berries are ground into a paste, and eaten as a main dish with a full meal - typically with fried fish.
One of the reasons why açaí (acai) is eaten this way only in the northern Amazon rainforest is because açaí (acai) really doesn’t travel or export fresh. It spoils so fast, within hours of being ground. So typically they sweeten it and make it into a sorbet to get around the world - which is why it’s then prepared into a sweet fruity açaí (acai) bowl. That’s not bad at all, just totally different from how they eat it in the Amazon.
Along with an outstanding acai feast, we also had maniçoba, another staple of Para food - cassava leaves cooked for 7 days to take out the poison and cooked with a variety of pig parts. It’s a wonderful dish.
It was an amazing learning experience, and I’ll never think of açaí (acai) the same again.
