Canadian Students visit BEAUMONT-HAMEL for the first time

In May 2010, a young woman visits Beaumont Hamel Memorial in memory of her family and major actions fought by the 1st Battalion of the Newfoundland Regiment.

Beaumont Hamel is thirty hectare site nine kilometres north of the town of Albert, France. This site commemorates all Newfoundlanders who fought in the Great War, particularly those who have no known grave. The site was officially opened by Field Marshal Earl Haig on June 7, 1925.

On a mound, surrounded by rock and shrubs native to Newfoundland, there stands a great bronze caribou, the emblem of the Newfoundland Regiment. Situated close to the Headquarters dugout of the 88th Brigade, of which the 1st Battalion, Newfoundland Regiment was a part, the Caribou nobly faces in the direction of the former foe, overlooking the trenches and ground across which the Battalion advanced on July 1, 1916.

At the base of the mound, three bronze tablets carry the names of 820 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve, and the Mercantile Marines who gave their lives in the First World War and have no known grave. [It should be noted that several of these have been subsequently found and buried in nearby Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries.]

Defining Moments Canada - Virtual Tour Presentation

We Invite You to a virtual presentation of “France, Belgium & Netherlands – with Defining Moments Canada”.
We invite you to join us and Defining Moments Canada as we explore the historic and culturally significant destinations of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Canada’s significant contributions in Europe during both World Wars are an important part of our shared history and the many defining moments which unite us as a nation. Some of Canada’s legendary battlefields during these conflicts include the iconic Juno Beach, Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy Ridge in France, Col. John McCrae’s Flanders Fields in Belgium, and the Scheldt in Holland. Learning about and visiting these places allows us, as Canadians, an unparalleled opportunity to not only remember the sacrifices of our soldiers, but to understand the magnitude of their contributions – their victories, defeats, heroism and personal stories.

Defining Moments Canada, in conjunction with Ellison Travel & Tours, welcomes you to this presentation which will provide a look at some of the highlights of our 14-Day Tour to France, Belgium and Holland, July 5-18, 2022. This will be an unforgettable opportunity to visit these historically significant countries, while also enjoying some of their cultural highlights, like the medieval city of Bayeux, beautiful Bruges, the stunning city of Amsterdam and the mercantile town of Zwolle.

Over the course of the presentation, you will meet tour hosts, Neil Orford (President of Defining Moments Canada), Chris Evans (Tour Historian) and David Godfrey (Tour Manager). It will also feature a presentation by the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy.

Source: Wikipedia
