**************************************************************
Barry Island is a district, peninsula and seaside resort, forming part of the town of Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. Barry's stretch of coast, on the Bristol Channel, has the world's second highest tidal range of 15 metres (49 ft), second only to Bay of Fundy in Eastern Canada.

The peninsula was an island until the 1880s when it was linked to the mainland as the town of Barry expanded. This was partly due to the opening of Barry Docks by the Barry Railway Company. Established by David Davies, the docks now link up the gap which used to isolate Barry Island. Until 1896, when a rail link with the mainland via a 250-yard long causeway was completed, the only access to Barry Island had been either on foot across the sand and mud at low tide, or when the tide was in, by ferry from the shore at the Old Harbour. In 1896 the railway line was extended along the newly built raised road causeway from Barry Station onto the island to provide a service to the newly opened and developing Barry Island Pleasure Park day tripper leisure facilities.

The recently refurbished seafront now offers a sweeping promenade along the entire length of Whitmore Bay beach, against a backdrop of enticing cafés and restaurants. Barry Island has 24 vibrantly coloured beach huts with excellent views across Whitmore Bay.

Barry Island Pleasure Park is an amusement park situated on the coast at Barry Island in the Vale of Glamorgan, about 10 miles south west of the capital city Cardiff, Wales. The park opens annually at weekends from Easter onwards and daily during the school summer holidays, until the first weekend in September. The Pleasure Park features over 17 fairground rides and attractions, ranging from simple children’s amusements to much more extreme rides. Entry to the park is free and tokens can be purchased for the rides.

Although Barry Island used to be home to a Butlins Holiday Camp, it is now known more for its beach and Barry Island Pleasure Park. It was used as a setting of the BBC TV show Gavin & Stacey.

Gavin & Stacey is a British comedy television show, written by James Corden and Ruth Jones. The series follows the romance between Gavin, from Billericay, Essex, and Stacey, from Barry, South Wales. Three series totalling twenty episodes were broadcast from 13 May 2007 to 1 January 2010 on BBC Three and later on BBC One. Broadcast on Christmas Day 2009 and New Year's Day 2010, episodes of the final series formed a significant part of the prime-time BBC seasonal programming. James Corden and Ruth Jones wrote a Christmas Day 2019 special for BBC One. With 18.49 million viewers, the broadcast in the United Kingdom was the most-viewed non-sporting event in a decade and the most-watched comedy in 17 years.

Butlins Barry Island was a holiday camp that opened in 1966 and closed in 1996, by which time it had been known as The Barry Island Resort for about nine years.

The holiday camp was used to film scenes in the Shangri-La holiday camp in the Doctor Who serial Delta and the Bannermen. The island was also a location for Doctor Who in the 2005 series episodes The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances, standing in for a bomb site in 1941 London and the 2014 series episode Flatline.

The third, fourth and fifth series of the BBC supernatural drama Being Human were set and filmed in Barry.

The ashes of Fred West, British serial killer, were scattered on Barry Island after his body had been cremated on 29 March 1995.

On 25 July 2008, Radio 1 featured Barry Island in one of their summer events, broadcasting a special edition of The Scott Mills Show live from the island.

In 2012 the Wales Coast Path opened, containing a minor detour in which the path loops around Barry Island before continuing on westwards towards Llantwit Major.

10 Worst Towns to Live in Wales

What are the worst towns to live in Wales? We don’t want to make it boring. Otherwise, we would have listed all the towns in Wales in the order of how they are considered good. Even if we could do that, some people may view such a listing as conjectural. Towns considered good by a reviewer may be seen as bad by another. But then, for the sake of this production, let’s assume that all the towns in Wales are good. But they can’t all be equally good. If some had higher degrees of goodness, yes, they are better. And if some towns are better than others, the logic follows that some are worse. On that positive note, let’s discuss the 10 worst towns to live in Wales.

10. Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale, the town at the head of the valley which is formed by the Ebbw Fawr tributary of the Ebbw River is the largest town in Blaenau Gwent county borough. Its direct access to the A465 Heads of the Valleys trunk road doesn’t make it a good place to live in Wales. The town bordering the Brecon Beacons National Park Ebbw Vale isn’t economically viable with the second-lowest mean salary in Britain. In fact, for the people to survive, 5 food banks are operating in the community. This has also affected the town educationally. This is indicated by its having the worst GCSE results in Wales. Meanwhile, Ebbw Vale is the town with the cheapest home price in England and Wales as no one would be willing to buy a home in a place very bad to live in.
9. Pontypool
As we think about Pontypool, we’re filled with the emotion of love for the residents of the people. No, this doesn’t mean we love to live among them or envy their situation. We only salute their resilience that makes them remain in a town without no places to visit, no nightlife, no restaurants and bars, and with zero social life. This administrative center of the county borough of Torfaen has nothing like a sense of community. Ironically, there’s no privacy in this town as almost everyone will notice your presence or absence. Your financial status is in public knowledge. Care needs to be taken in such a town to select a date if you don’t want to have an incestuous amorous affair.
8. Llangefni
The case of Llangefni, the county town of Anglesey, whose name in Welsh means meaning “church on the River Cefni,” is pathetic. The town which is home to the principal offices of the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the second largest settlement in that county has too many bad reviews. But to stay on a kinder side, we would side with those who consider it one of the worst Welsh towns to live because of the number of old people in the town. The town is actually gradually taking up the appearance of old peoples’ homes as it has a higher percentage of older people. That should tell you that the town is boring and is economically disadvantaged. The town’s unemployment rate is higher than the national average.
7. Port Talbot
What image does the name of the town, Port Talbot evoke? If you choose to turn a blind eye to the negatives, you are likely to see a town and community of the home of one of the biggest steelworks in the world. That is cute. But that economic opportunity which covers a large area of land, dominating the southeast of the town does not come without a cost for the town. The environmental pollution this has caused for the town some 13 kilometers from Swansea has made it one of the worst places to live. The town is filled with the stench from this and other dirt dominating the place.
6. Llantwit Major
Our attention is now on Llantwit Major, a community on the Bristol Channel coast. This is one of 4 towns in the Vale of Glamorgan. The community located about 7.2 kilometers from Cowbridge, 14 kilometers from Bridgend, 16 kilometers from Barry, and 24 kilometers from Cardiff has not allowed these nice locations to rub off on it. It is one of the 10 worst places in Wales on this list for anyone who cares about safety. The crime rate there is rather on the high side and this is obviously inimical a good living. We would recommend living in any other place in Wales before mentioning Llantwit Major.

'Sunny' BARRY ISLAND - From Gavin & Stacey To Chips & Gravy

Barry Island or as it’s known on sunny days like these “Barrybados” and home to Gavin & Stacey.

Barry Island is a classic Welsh seaside town close to Cardiff and it’s the main location for the TV comedy series Gavin & Stacey starring James Corden, Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon.

You can find a number of famous spots from Gavin & Stacey on the seafront along the main beach, Whitmore Bay. These include Marco's Cafe where Stacey used to work and Nessa’s amusement arcade.

During the trip, I had to try some classic chips & gravy from one of the fish and chip shops on the seafront, Boofy’s. It was a toss-up between Boofy’s and O’Sheas.

Barry Island also has a funfair, Barry Island Pleasure Park which is small but packed with rides.

All this in Barry Island and bright sunshine as well. We keep the sunny weather a secret in Wales to keep the crowds out.

Barry Island is on the South Wales coast in the Vale Of Glamorgan
