This is a winter walk of discovery around the Yorkshire Dales village of Kettlewell, North Yorkshire, England.
Pendle Hill walk from Barley via the Pendle Way - short route (Full Walk)
*Walk Summary*
This Pendle walk takes you up the shortest route up Pendle Hill from Barley, heading up via the Pendle Way. The route down uses a more gradual slope rather than the steeper steps and then retraces the outward path.
At the summit, Pendle Hill is 557m high and from there Blackpool tower, the Snowden range and the Lakeland fells can all be seen on a clear day.
Whilst Pendle Hill is synonymous with the Pendle Witches (the 400th anniversary of their hanging was in 2012), it is enjoyed by many thousands of people each year.

This adventure starts in Barrowford, where the 12 witches including Alice Nutter started their long shackled walk to Lancaster to be tried and hanged for suspected witch craft. The church yard in New Church is where the Nutter family are laid to rest. I then stopped off at Barley, which has the spooky Pendle Inn pub, and then on to the beautiful village Downham, which is at the foot of Pendle Hill.

Montgomery Canal walk | Berriew, Mid Wales
The Montgomery Canal in Mid Wales, known locally as The Monty, is the perfect setting for a gentle autumnal walk along the well-maintained towpath. We chose a sort section to walk by the pretty village of Berriew between Welshpool and Newtown in Montgomeryshire, North Powys.
The walk takes us along the Montgomery Canal from Bridge 128 - the Long Bridge - across the Berriew Aqueduct at the halfway point to end at Bridge 129 Efail Fach (Small Smithy). Berriew Aqueduct is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1794 - 97 to carry the Montgomery Canal over the River Rhiw which runs through the village of Berriew.
The Montgomery Canal is at present only partially restored as an inland waterway. It stretches 56 km in total from Frankton Junction (between Oswestry and Ellesmere in Shropshire) on the English border to Newtown in North Powys. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in England and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in Wales due to its aquatic plants. It is still dry in places and recently received funding for a major refurbishment project to ultimately make it navigable by boats along the entire route. The partnership project is overseen by the Montgomery Canal's owner - The Canal and River Trust.

Pendle Witches Walk from Barley (East and West Loops) - Full 4K Walk
*Walk Summary*
This Pendle Witches Walk from Barley in the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire consists of an Eastern and Western loop, which takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes in total, or you could just walk one of the loops in about half that time. On the way around the walk, we run through the story of the Pendle witches, pointing out related places along the way.
For the Western loop of this Pendle Witches Walk, start in the car park in Barley, before climbing towards Newchurch in Pendle, which affords great views of Lower Ogden Reservoir and Pendle Hill along the way.
In Newchurch in Pendle we visit the Witches Galore shop where you can pick up your spooky souvenirs and then head down the road to St Mary's Church, where you can see the 'Eye of God' built into the church tower and the so-called 'Witches Grave' with a skull and crossbones inscription on it.
From Newchurch in Pendle, we head past Faughs' quarry before climbing Driver Height, which gives us wonderful panoramic views of the Ogden Valley, Pendle Hill and out as far as the Yorkshire Three Peaks. We then return to Barley passing by the picturesque Upper and Lower Ogden reservoirs.
For the Eastern loop of the Pendle Witches Walk, again start in the car park in Barley and head alongside Pendle Water before leaving it to head through the wood by White Hough outdoor centre. The road towards Hollin Top is followed that again affords wonderful views down over Roughlee and beyond and then we drop down the Pendle Way into Roughlee, before passing by Roughlee Old Hall, the Bay Horse, the Alice Nutter witches statue and Roughlee's waterfall.
From there it's back along Pendle Water and then the walled Heys Lane with its views of Pendle Hill back into Barley. Try this Pendle Witches walk around Halloween, when you might see additional witches and ghouls along the way!
