Subscribe please and leave a comment. I moved to the area and it took me a while to visit Mayesbrook Park. For some reason Barking Park seemed more handy.., I guess because I have seen it during my work commute. What a great surprise to find how close I was to Mayesbrook Park and how beautiful it is.

Barking & Dagenham ¦ Love Your London ¦ (6/7) ¦ Ford, the wildfires, Dagenham Dock and Heathway

Tristán White and Sharon Crawford begin today's episode at Madonna's Bras, a local landmark just off the A13. They visit Dagenham Dock station, and talk about the old Ford factory, as well as the area's connection with Almussafes near Valencia. They discuss the movie Made in Dagenham, about the 1968 strike by female workers at the Ford factory. They explain how the Dagenham Breach was formed (also see free E-book below), and the secrets it unveiled. A harrowing trip to Farm Close then followed, scene of a wildfire in July 2022 that destroyed 10 of the 14 houses in that street, and then they visited Dagenham Parish Church to look for the memorial to PC George Clark, a local bobby whose murder has never been solved. A swift drink at the beautiful Cross Keys pub, where they met Gary Edwards, one of the unfortunate residents who almost lost his house on Farm Close, and then it was off to the Dagenham Heathway station, via Ahmad's Tourist Attraction.

How To Travel Around London and Buy an Oyster Card - Important Tips!

Here are some very important tips on how to travel around London and buy an oyster card.
Especially if it is your first time visiting London, if you aren't careful you can end up paying a lot more for your travel so it's important you pay the right fare. You can use your oyster card or contactless payment card for lots of different types of transport on London TFL services. This includes buses, trains, tubes, Thames Clipper boats, trams and even the Emirates Airline cable cars.
My favourite thing to do is to travel on the old Number 15 routemaster buses. A real icon of London. I'll show you all the tips and tricks on how to behave like a true Londoner and not to be barged out of the way by the locals when travelling on transport in London.
There are other ways to pay for London Transport including Apple Pay on your iphone or with a contactless credit or debit card. But I think it's easiest to get an oyster card when you first arrive. Try to avoid buying paper tickets because they cost more!! And the buses don't accept money so you must have an oyster or credit card or apple pay.

10 Poorest Towns in England

What are the poorest towns in England? Regardless of how affluent how a country is, poverty is still going to mark its presence in some of its communities, even if it’s not that gripping. This situation is quite obvious in England. To define the poorest towns in England, we have to look at towns with neighborhoods lacking basic social infrastructures such as parks, pubs, and sporting facilities. They are also towns with little or no government funding to catch up with other towns in the availability of shops, cultural assets, sports facilities, and open spaces where people can meet and engage in community life. In this video, we shall discuss some of the 10 poorest towns in England to illustrate this point.
10. Rochdale
If you have to understand the poverty state of this large town in Greater Manchester, check successive government figures about the LSOA which includes Rochdale town center based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). You’d see that in all domains of income, wages, employment, education, health, and housing, the town is among the most deprived.
For almost a decade when the attention has been shifted to this town as one of the poorest towns in the UK, a number of scathing articles have featured its condition in the national press. In response, a network of multi-million-pound plans has been put in place which to transform the area. For instance, the town’s housing association is working on upgrading the township housing scheme. However, this doesn’t come without a fierce backlash in form of petitions.
9. Hastings
There’s nothing to really justify millions of pounds of investment in Hastings on the southeast coast of England. For decades, it’s been ranked repeatedly as one of the most deprived towns in England. Grassroots charities’ efforts to improve things with programs such as neighbor-helping-neighbor have not been successful; food charities are unable to bridge the gap.
In Hastings, there’s the catchy phrase heating or eating which shows how bad it is to access basic amenities there. Politicians and journalists usually emphasize the phrase to illustrate the daily dilemma of people who have serious struggles to make ends meet. After feeding, you may not have enough to heat your home and have to endure cold. School attendance and attainment are nothing to write home about here as too many children grow up in poor households.
8. Darwen
Data from towns in Lancashire gave us an insight into how poor Darwen is. It is among the top 5 most dangerous medium-sized towns in the ceremonial and non-metropolitan county of Lancashire and it is among the overall top 20 most dangerous out of 236 towns, villages, and cities in the area. Consider the overall crime rate in the town in 2021 which was 99 crimes per 1,000 people. It is 22 percent higher than Lancashire's overall crime rate of 77 per 1,000. Additionally, Darwen is the 57th most dangerous medium-sized town in all of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Why are we highlighting the crime situation in Darwen? Because the town is very poor and poverty there is aiding crime.
7. Oldham
Oldham in Greater Manchester will not be here if it had maintained its proud history as one of the 19th century largest cotton-producing areas on the globe. However, it suffered the same fate as most of the textile industrial towns in England when the foreign competition was too stiff and was strangulating the local industry.

Barking & Dagenham ¦ Love Your London ¦ (3/7) ¦ River Roding, Creekmouth, Barking Riverside

After paying a short visit to the Quaker Burial Ground, Tristán White and Sharon Crawford take a walk alongside the River Roding, and tell you about its rich history and it's exciting future. We detour via Greatfields Park/Alfreds Way to see Bobby Moore's former home, buy freshly-made biltong and droewors at Hunter's in the Lyon Business Park, see the new Wharf Studios, check out the train outside Blumsom's Timber (and explain how it got there), visit the Barking Creek Barrier (near Beckton Sewage Works) at the confluence of Roding with Thames, tell the sad story of the 1953 floods that wiped out Creekmouth (photos thanks to Creekmouth Preservation Society), as well as the awful SS Princess Alice disaster which collided with Bywell Castle collier in 1878 (worst transport disaster in UK history and worst inland transport disaster in the world), talk about Crooked Billet pub, visit Bullman Marine on River Road, talk about the now-disappeared Dagenham Sunday Market, visit Barking Riverside station (London's newest station) which serves the new area dubbed by the media as Barcelona-on-Thames, and take a ferry from Barking Riverside Pier. Phew, that's a lot, isn't it?
