Baia Mare is a municipality along the Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County. The city lies in the region of Maramureș, a subregion of Transylvania. It is situated about 600 kilometres (373 miles) from Bucharest, 70 km (43 mi) from the border with Hungary, and 50 km (31 mi) from the border with Ukraine.
During the Bronze Age the region was inhabited by Thracian tribes. Later, it was included in the Dacian Kingdom formed by the King Burebista when the mining exploration began, as the area is rich in gold and silver.
Baia Mare is first mentioned in written documents released by Charles I of Hungary in 1328 under the name of Rivulus Dominarum (English: Ladies' River). In 1347 the town was identified in documents by Louis I of Hungary as an important medieval town with a prosperous mining industry. Its rules of organisation were characteristic of the free towns of that time. In 1411 the town and its surrounding areas, including the mines, were transferred into the property of the Hunyadi family by Sigismund, King of Hungary (later also Holy Roman Emperor), who recognised Janos Hunyadi's contribution to stop the Turkish invasion of Europe.

In 1703 Pintea Viteazul and his band managed to free the town for a short period of time from the German Imperial rule, under which it belonged the royal treasury. Since then Pintea is considered an important figure in the town's history, representing the idea of freedom. The Budești Church has Pintea's chain mail shirt and a helmet, reportedly worn by him in his battles. The Museum of Baia Mare displays his weapons and their harness.
Some of those young painters decided to settle down together in Baia Mare, then called Nagybánya, to work on art. They persuaded Hollósy to join them and founded the Nagybánya artists' colony, working on naturalism and plein air painting. The artists' colony became known later on for influencing the development of twentieth-century Hungarian and Romanian art. Works by each of these important painters is held by the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, which in 2009 opened the exhibit, Munich in Hungarian, Hungarian Artists in Munich 1850-1914, 2 Oct 2009 - Jan 2010. In addition, in 1966 the museum held a major exhibition of their work: The Art of Nagybánya. Centennial Exhibition in Celebration of the Artists' Colony in Nagybánya.
Following World War I, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dissolved, and in 1920, Baia Mare officially became part of the Kingdom of Romania. It became part of Hungary again between since 1940 by the Second Vienna Award, until the end of World War II. Near the end of that period, the city hosted the Baia Mare ghetto. After the war, the city was returned to Romania. Shortly after World War II in postwar development, the town of Baia Mare started to grow both in population and inhabited area.

Baia Mare este municipiul de reședință al județului Maramureș, Transilvania, România, format din localitățile componente Baia Mare (reședința), Blidari, Firiza și Valea Neagră. Orașul este situat în depresiunea Baia Mare, pe cursul mijlociu al râului Săsar, la poalele Munților Gutâi.

Baia Mare is a town known for two things: the factory chimney taller than the Statue of Liberty or the Eiffel Tower and the roasted chestnuts you can find during autumn.
We had a stroll through the Baia Mare market to get some fresh chestnuts and admire the old city center of this town in the North of Romania.
On our roadtrip we stopped throgh Dej to see what can you expect from a town of the way to Transylvania's largest city.

--MARAMURES WHAT TO DO—
We stayed in Botiza from where we did the following:
► Visit the Merry Cemetery close to the Ukrainian boarder.It’s a busy place with a lot of tourists, but it’s definitely worth seeing!
► Visit Bârsana Monastery on top of the hill. Also note that the old church is not on the ground anymore as I explained in the video! You’ll need to drive to an other spot to find it.
► Look up the wooden churches on the map, and just visit some of them. Also the ones not on the world heritage list are very beautiful! Call the number on the church to watch inside, if you’re lucky there’s a guide, sometimes English speaking.
► Hike, the surroundings are beautiful! And with the hills not being too steep it’s a pleasure walking here.
--WHERE TO SLEEP BOTIZA, MARAMURES--
We stayed in Pensiunea Sidau Parasca. Which was a great place! Very friendly people, good bed and good (local) food. We got great breakfasts and dinners! The hosts don’t speak much English.
Also George Iurca was recommended online, since he knows a lot about history as well!
--WHERE TO EAT BOTIZA, MARAMURES--
Since we only ate at the house we stayed in, we didn’t experience much outside. And also I do remember there were not a lot of restaurants from what I saw.
--TRANSPORTATION—
► We had our own car to go around which I would highly recommend. Lots of places are in rural area’s so it’s very convenient to have your own kind of transport here.

The Carpathian Mountains draw a wide arc through the centre of the country, leaving a swath of exposed rocky peaks surrounded by groves of pine and deciduous trees, and stretches of bright green meadow below. The harsh geography has limited human habitation, and the woods are filled with deer, elk and bear. Europe's second-longest river, the Danube, marks Romania's southern border with Bulgaria before turning suddenly northward and emptying into the Black Sea. The delta provides sanctuary for 300 species of bird and 160 species of fish. The sprawling marshes account for the largest expanse of reed beds in the world.
???? Castles & Medieval Towns
Transylvania, the land that gave us Dracula, has no shortage of jaw-dropping castles pitched precariously on rocky hilltops. There's spooky Bran Castle, of course, with its spurious connection to Bram Stoker’s fictional count, but don’t overlook beauties such as Hunedoara’s 14th-century Corvin Castle or King Carol I’s sumptuous 19th-century pile, Peleş Castle. In medieval towns like Braşov, Sighişoara and Sibiu, cobbled walkways support chic streetside cafes, while a cacophony of sounds emanating from student bars and clubs echo off the Gothic and baroque facades in lively Cluj-Napoca. Transylvania’s Saxon villages boast fortified churches that date back half a millennium.
???? Folk Culture
For centuries, a highly productive peasant culture thrived in much of Romania. The hilly geography and lack of passable roads necessitated the emergence of hundreds of self-sufficient villages, where old-school crafts such as bread-making, pottery, tanning and weaving were honed to an art. Folk museums, particularly the open-air skansens and village museums, are a must. Many isolated hamlets, where the old folkways are still practised, are museums in themselves. This is most evident in Maramureş, where oversized hay racks, horse carts and stately wooden churches dominate, and towns and villages have seemingly stepped out of the Middle Ages.
???? Outdoor Activities
The rocky peaks of Transylvania and Moldavia, snow-capped from mid-October in some years, call out for conquering, and well-marked trails lead to summits from all directions. There are less adventurous but no less rewarding walks through woods, meadows and villages in other parts of the country. The Danube Delta is a vast and unique protected wetland and makes a perfect backdrop for fishing, boating and, especially, birdwatching in spring. In summer, from mid-June to early September, the action moves to the Black Sea coast. Beach resorts fill up with swimmers, divers, sunbathers and partiers, who come for the all-night, open-air clubbing marathons.
