Atherstone Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Warwickshire, and around halfway between Birmingham and Leicester, is the town of Atherstone.

Geographically, Atherstone is situated along the Roman road known as Watling Street which stretched from the Kent coast to Shropshire, a large section of which is now the A5. It is around a mile away from the village of Mancetter, a former Roman settlement which is speculated to be the location of the defeat of Queen Boudica circa 60 or 61 AD.

At the heart of the town is St Mary's Church, dating from the 12th century, with various sections rebuilt up to the 18th century. In 1246 a market charter was granted to Atherstone by Henry III.

In 1485 Henry Tudor, who later became King Henry VII, rested in Atherstone the night before defeating Richard III at Bosworth Field. Accounts say Henry stayed in a pub on Long Street, while his 11,000-strong army camped in a meadow north of the church. After victory on the battlefield, Henry effectively ended the Wars of the Roses by uniting the houses of Lancaster and York with his marriage to Elizabeth of York, thus beginning the Tudor era.

By the late 16th century, Atherstone had become an industrial town and home to several trades including leather, cloth, metalworking and brewing. The arrival of the Coventry Canal in 1769 gave Atherstone a link to neighbouring towns and cities. The canal is open to this day with a walkable stretch located just over the road from the town centre.

In 1847 the railway arrived in Atherstone courtesy of the London and Northwestern Railway. Today this is situated on the West Coast Main Line running between London Euston and Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley. Central Birmingham is accessible via train in just under an hour (with a change at Tamworth or Nuneaton) and direct trains to London Euston take just under 90 minutes.

Atherstone hosts an annual event known as the Atherstone Ball Game. This tradition dates all the way back to 1199 when a match took place between Warwickshire and Leicestershire. Today the game is a free-for-all played on Long Street between 3 and 5pm on Shrove Tuesday. Hundreds compete and the winner is declared at 5 o'clock with the title going to the person who has possession of the ball when the whistle sounds. The only rule is participants are not allowed to kill each other!

The Ball Game restarts for its 822nd edition after being stopped for the first time due to Covid restrictions (obeyed by most organisations except Boris own government). Insanity is resumed.

The game is played on Long Street - part of the old Roman Road that formed Watling Street. This was the border between Saxon Britain and the Danelaw after the Viking invasions.

68 narrowboat life UK - Historic Hawkesbury Junction Joining The Coventry Canal To Atherstone Locks

NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode it’s another exciting day on nb JOSH as we will be going onto another new canal! First of all though Elliott takes a look around Stretton Junction which was our mooring spot for the night. It’s a historic spot with an old toll cottage where the Old Loop of the Oxford Canal used to pass through before the newer cut was introduced to speed up the time taken to get to Braunston. It’s all too easy to miss these places when you are making progress. We then get going for the day before passing under the M6 motorway to much excitement because it’s a road we have spent countless hours on in a former life! For some reason we meet boats coming the other way at all the wrong places so some avoiding action is required. We then meet a subscriber whose shout out to us makes us chuckle! Slightly confusing historic Hawkesbury Junction is up next which means we join the Coventry Canal. It isn’t long though before play is stopped by a boat wedged across the canal. Once underway again we get hit by debris from a farmer (it hurt) before filling up with diesel at a recommended spot where Sue will show you around the shop. Once going again we meet another couple of subscribers which always puts a smile on our faces before the closed locks at Atherstone mean we have found our mooring spot for the evening. Still there is time to check out the facilities here and also test our bargain toilet trolley which we acquired all the way back in London. Let’s hope there are no ‘accidents’.

CANALS - OXFORD CANAL and COVENTRY CANAL

We hope you'll SUBSCRIBE and support the channel and join us on our big adventure as we learn laugh and cry our way around the UK canal network. If you've ever wondered what life on the canals is like told without scripting or acting then we're sure you'll love what we video. It's authentic. It's real. It's told how it is with a bit of banter and occasional silliness thrown in for free!

We'll be sure to post new videos every week and look forward to taking you on our journey. See you on the next one!

Atherstone Hat Factory by boat

If you liked this, don't forget to like and subscribe for more canal and boat related videos!

The historic former Britannia Works on Coleshill Road. In 1999, Wilson & Stafford’s Britannia Works was the last of Atherstone’s once world-renowned hat factories to close. BWM is one of the oldest hat factories in the UK. Atherstone has been at the center of hat making since Tudor Times.

The Works were established in the mid-19th century and soon afterwards took over the adjacent Richmond Mill.

The site, in the angle between the Coventry Canal and Coleshill Road, is made up of a collection of buildings dating from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries as the works developed.

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

If you have any further visa questions visit the official UK government website.

Places to see in ( Lichfield - UK )

Lichfield is a cathedral city and civil parish in Staffordshire, England. One of eight civil parishes with city status in England, Lichfield is situated roughly 16 mi north of Birmingham. Today, the city still retains its old importance as an ecclesiastical centre, and its industrial and commercial development has been limited. The centre of the city has over 230 listed buildings (including many examples of Georgian architecture), and preserves much of its historic character.

Notable for its three-spired medieval cathedral, Lichfield was the birthplace of Samuel Johnson, the writer of the first authoritative Dictionary of the English Language. The city's recorded history began when Chad of Mercia arrived to establish his Bishopric in 669 AD and the settlement grew as the ecclesiastical centre of Mercia. In 2009, the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork, was found 5.9 km (3.7 mi) south-west of Lichfield.

The development of the city was consolidated in the 12th century under Roger de Clinton, who fortified the Cathedral Close and also laid out the town with the ladder-shaped street pattern that survives to this day. Lichfield's heyday was in the 18th century, when it developed into a thriving coaching city. This was a period of great intellectual activity, the city being the home of many famous people including Samuel Johnson, David Garrick, Erasmus Darwin and Anna Seward, and prompted Johnson's remark that Lichfield was a city of philosophers.

Lichfield covers an area of approximately 5.41 sq mi (14.0 km2) in the south-east of the county of Staffordshire in the West Midlands region of England. It is approximately 25 km (16 mi) north of Birmingham and 200 km (120 mi) north-west of London.
