general information
East Flanders is located in the valley of the river Scheldt. This region of Belgium is the most densely populated in the whole country, where many inhabitants are involved in highly developed sectors of industry and agriculture.
Capital
The administrative center of the region is the city of Ghent. He meets his guests with streets and buildings, as if descended from the canvases of the Middle Ages.
Nature
The nature of East Flanders is distinguished by picturesque landscapes of meadows and forests located in the valley of the blue Scheldt River. Beautiful places can be found in the Blankaart and De Teut nature reserves, and you can get acquainted with the unique plants of Flanders in the Tervuren arboretum. It will be interesting for little tourists to communicate with animals at the Mikerf children's farm, where not only domestic animals, but also rare animals live in excellent conditions.

In the administrative center of the Ghent region, a festival is held every year at the end of July. If you come to Belgium at this particular time, then the Ghent Festival is a must-see. Aalst, located 35 km from the capital, is divided into two parts by the Dendre River. With a population of 77 thousand people, the city occupies not the last place in the country in terms of brewing and textile production. The architecture of this provincial town is made in the typical Renaissance style for Belgium. Since 2010, UNESCO has included in its list of masterpieces the carnival, which takes place annually in Aalst. The tradition began in the Middle Ages, and since 1923 the authorities of the city have joined the celebration. Every February, residents walk through the streets and squares for three days, observing traditions.
The city of Tournai is located in the valley of the Scheldt, only 10 km from it, Belgium borders on France. The city for almost two millennia of existence has changed its owners more than once: the Romans, the French, the Dutch. Having absorbed the cultures of different nations, now its appearance attracts tourists with architecture and painting.
Oudenarde lies 30 km south of the capital. Having become famous in the 11th century for the production of tapestries, and the proximity to the Scheldt made its position advantageous for trade. Even then, no expense was spared in the construction of churches and monasteries. Although not in its original form, you can still enjoy them.
Sint Niklas is both ancient and modern. There are both historical buildings and trendy exhibition centers and amusement parks for adults and children.
What to see
An unobvious interesting place to visit is Sint Pieters - the railway station. This is a huge station, the construction of which was dedicated to the World Exhibition of Ghent. Not so long ago, the frescoes in the main lobby were restored and a new glass dome was built.
Ghent, which is basically the center of attractions in the region, has one of the creepiest museums. The torture museum at Gravensteen Castle shows guests the real murder weapons that the inhabitants of Ghent were once subjected to. Beware, the place is gloomy!
A real treasure trove of antiquity is the Graslei Embankment, along which buildings dating back to the 12th-19th centuries are located. Walking along the embankment, you can immediately learn the whole history of the city.
Gravensteen is a castle of the Middle Ages, famous for a real defensive system that protected the inhabitants from Viking raids. For several centuries the building was used as the residence of the counts of Flanders.
Attractions
The main historical buildings of the region are concentrated in the center of the capital: St. Nicholas Church, Belford Tower, St. Bavo's Cathedral. St. Michael's Bridge is also located there, from which excellent panoramic pictures of the city are obtained.
In Deinze, in the very center, there is a city cathedral, made like a basilica. Music lovers will especially like it, because on its territory there are rare instruments of impressive size: an old carillon and an organ. The building itself, made in the Gothic style, is decorated with sculptures of the apostles.
Among the variety of art museums, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent stands out. Permanent exhibitions in the museum amaze with their breadth, which have been collected for more than one century, and seasonal expositions surprise with originality.

The Perfect Christmas Road Trip In A Motorhome - Belgium - Bruges
If you are looking for the best place to go in your motorhome over Christmas - well you've come to the right place!
In the first part of my 12-day tour of Belgium in my motorhome, I will take you around the city of Bruges, with a visit to the top of the famous Belfry, the beer and chip museum, the busy squares filled with Christmas markets, and a cruise on the canals of the city. Staying in my motorhome on the aire Camperplatts Bargeweg, only a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
Join me on my road trip around Belgium in both the northern Flanders region and the southern Wallonia region and its many UNESCO heritage sites, visiting cities including Ghent, Brussels, and Antwerp, medieval towns including Dinant, Durbuy, and Huy, and historic castles including Gravensteen, finishing with an emotional visit to the war cemeteries around the area of Ypres. I’ll also be visiting top-rated tourist attractions including the Grottes de Han (caves and animal park) and popular Mini Europe next to the Atomium in Brussels. It’s fair to say that Belgium is extremely photogenic, and will provide many opportunities for those Instagram posts!
My itinerary should give you inspiration for a short trip of 3-4 days and longer road trips showing you options for a visit in a motorhome and staying in aires and campsites along the way (with some insights into what to expect!). Many of the cities I visited by train and Belgium has one of the most efficient train networks I’ve ever been on!

The last few years have been tough for us all, and after losing both my mum and more recently my grandma (who was not only my adventurous inspiration but also my travel buddy) I've had a real personal struggle with long bouts of depression and anxiety....but those who know me, know what works and that is the traveling and getting out in the fresh air. I'll take you go-karting down a mountain in Snowdonia, on nostalgic visits to our favourite childhood museums, to castles, coasts and historic areas of interest, bodyboarding and biking, something for everyone! I hope to be able to encourage other women to get out there and have a go! The Church of Our Lady of Alsemberg, whose first structures date back to 1241, contains several works of art, including a Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century.
Since the middle of the 13th century, Alsemberg has venerated a Romanesque statue of Mary, which was allegedly donated to the parish by Sofia, wife of Duke Henry II of Brabant.
Tradition has it that the Blessed Virgin desired from the Queen of Hungary, Elisabeth of Thuringia, that she should build a church in Brabant, on the mountain, where the wormwood bloomed. The Romanesque-Byzantine miraculous statue of the Mother Virgin, invoked as the Star of the Sea, dates from about 1200 and is carved from Hungarian hornbeam. Princess Sofia, daughter of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, who died in 1231, brought it to Alsemberg when she married Duke Henry in 1242.
A Romanesque church stood here until the 14th century, which was replaced by the present building from the 1350s onward. The construction of the new three-aisled church progressed very slowly. The church is built in the late Gothic style and has all the characteristics of Brabant architecture from the 14th century, including the gables over the side aisles and the pillar capitals with cabbage leaf motif.
The choir was worked on from about 1350 to about 1450. The vault was not completed until 1470, thanks to a gift from Duke Charles the Bold, who came here on a pilgrimage on February 8, 1466. In 1503 work began on the tower, the lower vault of which was not completed until 1527. Around 1520 the large nave was vaulted over. Charles V donated wood from the Sonian forest for this purpose. Hence his coat of arms is inscribed in the vault.
The sacristy dates from the 17th century and was adapted in 1775. General restoration was begun in 1866 and the slender, crowned spire was completed in 1891. The spire bears a ducal crown, referring to the role that several dukes of Brabant played in the creation of this shrine.
The most recent restoration dates from 1983.
Apart from the Romanesque devotional statue, the church possesses several other works of art, including a wrought iron choir screen from 1770, two Baroque confessionals and a pulpit (end 18th century) by Jan van Geel. Baptismal font, of which the vessel dates from around 1200 and probably belonged to the original Romanesque church (side portal). There is also a marble baptismal font from 1725. Several paintings, some of which recount the history of the pilgrimage site, were painted around 1645 by Antoon Sallaert. This Brussels artist also painted nine of the 16 portraits that decorate the sacristy and depict the church's benefactors.
The Church of Our Lady is located on the Chaplaincy Square.

In the old situation, a traffic light was located on this motorway to connect Moerbeke and Kruisstraat to the E34 road. As the speed limit is 120 km/h here, this dangerous situation was 'solved' by building this rollercoaster interchange with an overpass and two large roundabouts. Sadly, not only have they forgotten to delete the old pedestrian crossing, in order to travel from the direction Kruisstraat to the direction Antwerpen, one has to complete a figure of '8'.

057 Bezoek Veurne + ruzie om koffiekoek
Zondag 9 oktober 2022, naar de bakker alles gaan halen, lekker drone over de camping, en onze fietstocht naar Veurne. 's Avonds nog naar de frituur op Kompass Camping gegaan. Hans zijn koffiekoek was weg?! Den afwas gaan doen en toch maar naar huis gereden om 21:00 uur want de files op maandag rond Antwerpen zijn een hel en Hans moest naar het ziekenhuis op maandag om 15u00. Dus vertrekken en rond 22:40 uur thuis gekomen.

Achter de schermen | Open Monumentendag | Mechelen 2021
Open Monumentendag is een evenement waar duizenden mensen gaan kijken achter de schermen van erfgoed en uitzonderlijke gebouwen. Als inwoner van de historische stad Mechelen is dit altijd een hoogtepunt in de culturele schoonheid van de stad. In deze 32ste editie koos ik als Top 3 een bezoek aan het oude Sint-Jozefziekenhuis, het vroegere stadhuis en huidig postkantoor Huis De Beyaert en als afsluiter een ondergrondse kijk op het kunstatelier van Museum Hof van Busleyden. Uiteraard was er nog veel meer te bekijken maar je moet ergens een keuze maken.

Wie ben ik :

Net op de grens provincie Luik en Luxemburg ligt Baraque de Fraiture, ook wel Baraque Fraiture genaamd. Met zijn 652 m hoogte is hij het hoogste punt in de provincie Luxemburg.
Ligt er sneeuw in de Ardennen, dan kun je hier gegarandeerd genieten van een 'winterwonderland' op het 'Plateau des Tailles'.
