FAQ
================================

Q: How long was the trip?
A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.

Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD

Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals

Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

Q: Where did you stay overnight?
A: You can find links to the different accommodations above + alternatives.

Traditional JAPANESE Breakfast at Arai Ryokan + Japanese ONSEN TOWN Tour | Shuzenji, Japan

In my eleven years of traveling, I’ve visited some of the world’s most mind-blowing locations. I checked off another unreal travel destination on my list in January of 2019 when I had the pleasure of spending twelve incredible days exploring Japan. This island nation has everything I love about traveling to foreign lands: fascinating history, a rich and unique culture, kind and helpful people, and sensational food. Come along with me as I explore Japan!

My exploration of the prefectures around Tokyo continued as I woke up at the Arai Ryokan Onsen, a traditional, luxurious Japanese resort in the town of Shuzenji in the Shizuoka Prefecture. I enjoyed an amazing, multi-course meal there the night before, and now it was time for a traditional, multi-course breakfast!

The Arai Ryokan is a former traditional Japanese house that was converted into a hotel. My room was nice and toasty and had an amazing bathroom and a closet, and I slept on a futon that was brought to my room. I couldn’t wait to eat breakfast and start my day!

I was led to a room where breakfast was already set up for me and my new friend Haley from Girls Love Travel. There were thirteen different foods for us to try! I started with the seaweed, which was very nice and crunchy. There was some type of fish in it, too. It was really refreshing and not too briny!

Next was miso soup that was loaded with clams/ It was very nice! The clams are so small, you really have to know how to use chopsticks to eat them!

Our next dish was yuba, or tofu/soy milk skin. I added some wasabi to it. I didn’t love it, so I moved on to the next dish, a Japanese omelet, which tasted like it contained soy. I followed that with some amazing salmon, tofu, and baby sardines. The sardines were similar to the seaweed, but a bit saltier.

Next was a fish cake with seaweed, which practically evaporated in my mouth. Then I went with some squid, which was coated in a sauce that was alike a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise. Next was sardines with radish and rice, which tasted kind of like sushi!

Fried tofu stuffed with carrots was next. It sat in a pool of fish broth and was really good! Then I went with the pickled plum and pickled radishes. The plum had a seed in it and was very sour, almost like an airhead. I mixed the other pickles with my rice; it’s a great way to tone down the intense flavor.

The final dish was hotpot with tofu, vegetables, mushrooms, and an oyster. The sauce was soy sauce with chilies. The mushrooms were super crunchy and delicious. Then I added cabbage to the tofu and sauce. Then I finished up with a tangerine, which was sweeter than it was sour.

Then it was time to explore Shuzenji! Even though it was gray and raining like crazy, the town was beautiful. The houses are amazing, and I loved the koi pond and the gorgeous architecture.

Our first stop was the Shuzenji Temple, where I first cleansed my hands and mouth (and the ladle I used) before entering the temple, which was established around the 9th century. The main hall is so beautiful and dates back to Imperial Japan. The woodwork is stunning!

We continued through the town, which was super clean and full of traditional houses. We stopped at an observation deck, where we took off our shoes and climbed to the top. From there, we could see Arai Ryokan, the hot springs, and the rest of the town from there.

Then we visited a heated foot bath and the spot where a monk cracked open a rock and discovered a hot spring over 1,000 years ago! It’s right along the river, near the center of town. It’s hot there!

Then we saw the Kawara-yu foot bath before we followed a foot path along the river and crossed it to visit the bamboo forest to see it during the day. The shoots are 60 to 70 feet tall and there are about 300 of them in the forest. The forest is only 15 years old and contains a table at its center where you can lie back and see the shoots reach for the sky around you. Bamboo grows super fast, and can be up to 60-100 feet tall within just a year! This forest is so beautiful and peaceful.

I love visiting small towns like this!

I hope you enjoyed my traditional Japanese breakfast and Shuzenji town tour! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel!

15 Things to Do Near Tokyo, Japan - Visiting Yamanashi, Shizuoka & Kanagawa Prefectures

Some of my favorite adventures I had during my 12-day trip to Japan were the ones I had just outside of Tokyo in the Yamanashi, Shizuoka, and Kanagawa Prefectures, and I want to share them with you in this guide to things you can do near Tokyo, Japan!

My Film Making Kit ►

-Yamanashi Prefectural Maglev Exhibition Center – Tsuru City, Yamanashi Prefecture

This is the only facility in Japan where you can get an up-close look at the Maglev, a high-speed train that travels at speeds up to 500 kilometers per hour!

-Fuji-Q Highland Amusement Park – Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture

This amusement park is known around the world for its fast and steep roller coasters, which are a blast to ride! It’s a fun outing for the whole family!

-La Vista Fuji Hotel & Spa – Yamanashi Prefecture

This stunning hotel, spa, and onsen boasts some of the most spectacular views of Mount Fuji in Japan, as well as a great breakfast buffet and mind-blowing late-night ramen!

-Ide Sake Brewery – Fuji Five Lakes Region, Yamanashi Prefecture

The pure, fruity sake at this incredible brewery is bolstered by the Mount Fuji spring water used in their sake production. Take part in a tour and a tasting to gain a deeper appreciation of sake brewing!

-Houtou Fudou – Fuji Five Lakes Region, Yamanashi Prefecture

This charming Samurai hot pot restaurant uses only high-quality ingredients, which can be tasted in every bite of their Houtou noodles. The serving sizes are very generous!

-Izunokuni Panorama Park – Mount Katsugari, Shizuoka Prefecture

After riding a gondola to the top of Mount Katsugari, take in the beautiful Sky Garden and stunning views of the surrounding countryside before stopping by the Katsuragi Hitokotonushi Buddhist shrine and the 100 statuettes of Jizo!

-Arai Ryokan – Izu-Hakone Area, Shizuoka Prefecture

For true Japanese hospitality, stay at the Arai Ryokan Inn, which boasts extensive art collections, gorgeous traditional architecture, and a wide array of succulent seafood options!

-Shuzenji Onsen – Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture

After checking out this hot spring town’s Hakoyu public bath, take a walk through its peaceful bamboo forest and try the town’s many wasabi products!

-Atami – Shizuoka Prefecture

Atami’s magnificent cherry blossom trees bloom during the cheaper months of late January to mid-February, making them the most cost-effective cherry blossoms in the country!

-Owakundani Valley – Kanagawa Prefecture

At the volcanic Owakundani Valley, steam and hot gases issue from vents in the ground and pools of sulfuric water boil in the open air. Try an egg cooked in these pools; the shells turn black and are said will add 7 years to your life!

-Hakone Open-Air Museum – Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture

This fantastic open-air museum is home to over a thousand works of art by artists including Pablo Picasso. Check out their five exhibition halls, children’s areas, and more!

-Hakone Kowakidani Onsen Mizunooto – Kanagawa Prefecture

This unique onsen offers half-Japanese lodgings and half-Western amenities, including a bed instead of a futon or inflatable mattress. Don’t miss out on their heavenly Japanese barbecue dinner!

-Odawara Castle – Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture

Take a tour of this prominent historic Japanese castle to see its ancient armor, swords, maps, and old documents. Finish up by renting some Samurai-style armor and taking some fun photos in front of this gorgeous landmark!

-Odawara Oden – Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture

For the delicious traditional winter food called oden, which typically includes boiled eggs, daikon, and fish cakes, visit Odawara Oden. Finish off your meal with some delicious sake!

-Bullet Train Ride to Tokyo – Kanagawa Prefecture

No Japanese vacation is complete without riding a bullet train, which makes cities hundreds of miles apart only a few hours away from one another. Take a 40-minute trip from Odawara to Tokyo for the train ride of a lifetime!

And there you have it! Those are the fifteen things you should do near Tokyo!

If you enjoyed this guide to what to do near Tokyo, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already, and I will see you in the next travel food adventure in Japan!

Experience Japan's Coolest New Ski Resort - Lotte Arai Resort

Discover the hottest new ski resort in Japan, the luxurious Lotte Arai Resort in Myoko, only two hours from Tokyo. Arai is blessed with the deepest powder in Japan, with an average of around 15 metres each season; more than the much-frequented Niseko and with less of the queuing.

Mint Tours Resort Profile - Lotte Arai Resort, Japan

Last winter we were invited by Lotte Arai Resort to check out what they have going on there. So naturally we put together the A-Team to check it out. We took pro snowboarders Geoff Brown, Erika Vikander and Michaela Davis-Meehan along for the ride.

The Lowdown
The resort is situated in Niigata, just 18 kilometres from the Sea of Japan is a little-known ski area, Lotte Arai Resort. It's a 5-star uber-luxe resort that is home to some of the best powder on Earth. And if last season’s tally of 21 metres of snowfall gets you excited, then read on.

If this place isn’t on your powder radar, there’s a very good reason. It was abandoned for ten years before it's recent re-launch, and the resort has had a 5-star makeover. Think luxury rooms, gondolas, lounge bars, bakeries, whiskey and wine bars, private karaoke rooms, indoor swimming pools, onsen, day spas, a zip line, indoor rock climbing walls, and restaurants showcasing the best of the local Niigata produce. This is the only truly 5-star resort on Japan.

The Terrain
While the luxury off-snow offering is impressive, it's the mountain that is the highlight. To start with, you’ve got 1000 meters of vertical from peak to base. The terrain is rolling and open and there’s some big lines to ride from the peak. And to top it off, Lotte Arai leaves 70% of the resort ungroomed which makes it freeride heaven. You’ve got 10 avalanche controlled, ungroomed, backcountry style zones to explore throughout the tour. There’s a reason why local riders refer to it as Japanese Whistler.

Snowfall
And the snow? Well if in an average season they score 21 metres of snowfall is anything to go by, you're going to need to pack your powder board (and snorkel). Throughout winter, fierce Siberian storms push over the Sea of Japan, dumping pure white goodness on this coastal treasure. By January, Lotte Arai has typically already received around 12 metres of snowfall. So you get the idea of just how much it snows. It CONSTANTLY snows.

To deal with this colossal snowfall, Lotte Arai Resort has employed one of the best avalanche forecasters in the business, Dave Iles from Whistler. Dave and his team spend their days ensuring the terrain is safe to enjoy. Fortunately the snowpack at Arai settles, stabilises and bonds quickly so avalanche closures aren't long. When Dave's team opens the resort after significant snowfall, it’s pure powder paradise.

Luxury 5 Star Accommodation
We stayed on-mountain at Lotte Arai Resort Hotel. This is a 5 star, luxury hotel with access to the region’s best powder. The hotel has all the modern amenities that you'd expect from a 5 star hotel, onsen, day spa, indoor pools, fitness centre, rock-climbing, bars, bakery, wine cellar, shops and restaurants using the freshest locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed our stay in the Superior Rooms. Each room has amazing views of Okenashiyama and the surrounding area. Each room has a great heating, private ensuite bathroom, TV, refrigerator and free WiFi.

If you want to ride at Lotte Arai Resort get in touch. It's one of the resorts we visit on our Lotte Arai and Myoko Freeride Tours.
