Apatity is located beyond the Arctic Circle in 157km southeast from the city of Murmansk, Russia around Khibiny Mountains and Imandra Lake.
The city is name just after the mineral it is very rich with - apatites.
Apatite is a raw material for the production of phosphate fertilizers, phosphorus and phosphoric acid, it is used in ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, in the production of ceramics and glass. That’s why natural mineral apatite formations are economically feasible to process on an industrial scale.

How do people live in Murmansk, Russia?
Murmansk was founded in 1882. Currently, the population of the city Murmansk is 270,384 people. In the 1920s, Murmansk received the nickname Red Village because the overcrowded workers' barracks were painted red.
The Murmansk region is the northernmost region of northwest Russia, located on the Kola Peninsula, bordering Finland and Norway. Murmansk is the largest ice-free port in Russia, located beyond the Arctic Circle.
Sociological studies have shown that financial security is a factor in keeping the population in Murmansk.

Kirovsk ja Apatiitti Kuolan niemimaalla, Kirovsk on lähinnä hiihtokohde, Apatiitti kaivospaikkakunta. Apatiitti on suhteellisen nuori kaupunki, se on perustettu vuonna 1968. Kaupungissa on mm. erilaisia tiedelaitoksia.
Kirovskin laidalla kohoaa Hiipinä-tunturi jolla on myös laskettelurinteitä. Hiipinä-tunturi on vaikuttava näky - se ei näy valitettavasti kunnolla videossa. En tajunnut aikoinaan kuvata sitä kunnolla. Video on vuodelta 2008. Videossa oleva hotelli on Severnaja. Huhun mukaan mm. Vladimir Putin olisi yöpynyt hotellissa. Ulkomailta mm. norjalaiset kuulemma käyvät hiihtämässä Hiipinä-tuntureilla. Näillä tuntureilla on myös kuulemma nähty mm. Ville Haapasalon mainitsema lumimies Afonja.

The town of Kirovsk (don’t mess it with “Kirov”) is located right under the Khibiny, the largest mountain range on the Kola Peninsula in Murmansk region of Russia.
It is founded in 1929, after the geologists discovered a huge deposits of apatites and nephelines - the minerals widely used in agriculture, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, production of ceramics and glass.
Originally, the town of Kirovsk was named as Khibinogorsk which is literally “Khibiny Mountain Town”, but in 1934 it was renamed after Sergey Kirov, one of the most significant politicians of the early USSR period.

A small working town founded around Deer Mountain (Oleniya Gora) in 1949 for the purpose of iron ore mining.

Khibiny for 4 days (July 2017)
Short trekking in the vicinities of Kirovsk. Radial hiking from the MSU research station to Aiquaivenchorr and Pachvumchorr. The year 2017 was extremely snowy, so we were not able to reach more remote parts of the mountains.
Khibiny are low (max.1201m) peneplenized mountains with distinctive glacial landforms. The hiking is wild, no prepared routes, so you will definitely feel the taste of discovery there. The main hub for travellers is a nearby city Apatity with its airport (connections to Moscow and St.Petersburg) and a railway station. Kirovsk was built in 1920s when precious apatite and nepheline were found in the Khibiny massif and experienced a fast growth. After the fall of the USSR the city lost almost a half of its population. However, now Kirovsk is reviving due to the influence of Phosagro company and the development of tourism, especially skiing resort.
Main tourist attractions: Apatit exhibition centre (history of mining in the area with a fine collection of minerals and rocks), the northenmost botanical garden in Russia, museum of Venedikt Erofeev (author of Moscow - Petushki), Snow village, ski resort Big Wood.

Kandalaksha is the southernmost town of Murmansk Region in Russia. It is located 200km south of Murmansk and 68km north of the borders of Republic of Karelia and Arctic Circle. In the place where Niva river meets Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea. Founded in 1526.
But the main development of Kandalaksha started in 1915 there when was built the Commercial Sea Port.
Then, in 1937 began the construction of «Niva GES-3 (Niva Hydroelectricity-3) which was launched in 1949.
After all, in 1951, was powered the Kandalaksha Aluminium Plant which is now releases 76,000 tons of aluminium a year.

The Khibiny Massif, Khibiny Mountains, Khibinsky Mountains or Khibins, Khibinsky tundras, Khibiny (Russian: Хиби́ны [xʲɪˈbʲinɨ]) is one of the two main mountain ranges of the Kola Peninsula, Russia, within the Arctic Circle, located between Imandra and Umbozero lakes.
The massif is of oval shape of about 1,300 km2. and occupies the central part of the peninsula at a relative elevation of 900–1000 m above the surrounding plain. The mountains are not particularly high; the two highest peaks are the Yudychvumchorr, which stands 1,201 metres (3,940 ft), and the Chasnachorr, which stands 1,191 metres (3,907 ft).[1] The average elevation is 1,116 metres (3,661 ft).[2] The mountains form the shape of a horseshoe topped by a high plateau, drained by a series of deep canyons. The peaks are of plateau type, with steep slopes, with glaciers, icefields and snowfields in some places. The overall terrain is alpine tundra.
The second, and similar mountain range of the Kola Peninsula, the Lovozero Tundras, is located about 5 km east from the easternmost point of Khibiny.[3]
The Khibiny range is extremely rich in minerals, mainly apatite and nepheline ores. 477 valid minerals have been reported and 108 of those are type localities or minerals first described in the Khibiny.[4] The range is also seismically active.
Khibiny mountains are mostly uninhabited, except for one of the world's richest mineral quarries. One of the minerals discovered there is reported to have a potential as a nuclear waste radioactivity absorbent.[5] By the foot of the massif the cities of Apatity and Kirovsk are situated.
The Khibiny Mountains lie within the Kola Peninsula, a large peninsula extending from northern Russia into the Barents and White seas. The total land area of the peninsula is approximately 100,000 square kilometres (39,000 sq mi). It is rich in minerals due to the removal of a layer of soil during the last ice age.[3]
Climate[edit]
Khibiny have an Arctic-moderate climate, with an average winter temperature of −5 °C (23 °F). However, the temperature can potentially drop to −30 °C (−22 °F) during the night. The Gulf Stream, which brings warmer water to the Kolsky Peninsula from the north, moderates the climate, making it slightly warmer than other Arctic regions.[1]
