Is Charleroi really the World's Ugliest City? ????????
Matt and I took a day trip to Charleroi, a former mining city in Belgium that has fallen on tough economic times in recent decades. A few years ago, a Dutch newspaper claimed that Charleroi is the World's ugliest city, and plenty of other media have jumped on that bandwagon. So we explored the city to see if it really id the most ugly city in the World.
Sure, we found plenty of ugliness and scars of a deprived past and present. But we also found some pleasant corners of the city and a thriving arts culture!

The Paradise of the Charleroi Metro (Belgium)
Heard about this for decades, but it wasn't until 2013 that the Metro was pieced together, in 7 phases from 1976. The pre-metro route numbers were replaced with M1 through M4 labels. The 1980-82 rolling stock was supplied by La Brugeoise et Nivelles.
This metro is a paradise. First of all the equipment is modern but not too modern. The cars are all identical and sporting the interesting and somewhat retro livery adopted by TEC (transport en commun) a few years ago. It is un-tainted by fading, ad wraps, dirt. There are no glaring LEDs or warning stickers all over the place. No beep, boops, claxons, garbled, redundant or rushed announcements. In fact no use of public address at all. Full or empty, your ride will likely be as tranquil as in the car you left at home. Nothing demands your attention. All the seats are front facing and cushioned. The colors inside and out are earth tones and harmonize well with the architecture of the stations (and the fall foliage in my video). The car floors are medium level, so that you have a single step down to a thick low level platform, yet the car floor is uniform height permitting a safe flow of interior movement. The internal and outward sight lines in the nearly 40 year old cars are incomparable, including out the front.
There are no clumsy and expensive fare gates and ticket sellers. Most people buy an annual pass permitting unlimited rides for less than a dollar a day.
The scenery is a mix of urban, industrial, and wooded suburbs. The industrial and river views are especially unique. The downtown loop is mostly underground. Some downtown streets are auto-free.

Some history:
Charleroi is the largest city and municipality of Wallonia, the agglomeration has a population of around 500,000 inhabitants, this makes it the fifth largest agglomeration of the country.
The metro line was planned in the 1960s as a 52-km light rail network, operating on heavy rail metro infrastructure. There were plans for eight lines and 69 stations radiating from a central loop downtown.
n 1974 they started building the lines; however 15 years later, only three lines are in use. The Petria line, a part of the Gilly line, and three-quarters of the loop were actually built and opened to traffic. The high costs of construction, together with a decline in Charleroi’s traditional industries, and questioning of profitability, are all mentioned as reasons for not succeeding the original plan.
Here you see the branch to Châtelet that was fully completed but never placed in service, it is unlikely ever to be opened or completed.
The line is 6,8 kilometers long with 8 stations. Neuville, Chet, Pensee, Centenaire, Champeau, Corbeau, Trieux and last station Chatelet. The first 4 stations are all ready for use, but the costs to maintain a line are to high. The underground station Centenaire, finished in 1985, is the last station were rails and electricity lines are installed. From here starts a long concrete trench filled with garbage, trees and bushes.

A walk through Charleroi's shabby Red Light District
When you walk from Charleroi Southern Train Station towards the city center, you have to pass through the city's red light district. The whole place is deserted and very run-down. You can see signs of trespassing and abuse everywhere.

URBEX - LA MAISON DIANA #92
Visite surprenante de cette Maison à l'abandon.
La maison appartenait à un couple de personnes âgées chrétiennes, à la mort de son époux, Diana ne pouvant plus entretenir la maison pour cause de santé, elle est allée en maison de repos.
Sa maison fût à vendre, mais malheureusement elle ne trouva personne pour racheter la propriété.
N'ayant aucun héritier, à la mort de Diana la maison resta ainsi et appartient dorénavant à la ville qui la laisse à l'abandon depuis tout ce temps.
