What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.

Amesbury is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is most famous for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is in its parish, and for the discovery of the Amesbury Archer—dubbed the King of Stonehenge in the press—in 2002. It has been confirmed by archaeologists that it is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the United Kingdom, having been first settled around 8820 BC.
King Alfred the Great left it in his will, a copy of which is in the British Library, to his youngest son Aethelweard (c.880-922). Eleanor of Provence, queen of England, died in Amesbury on 24 or 25 June 1291, and was buried in Amesbury Abbey. The parish includes the hamlets of Ratfyn and West Amesbury, and most of Boscombe Down military airfield.
Amesbury is located in southern Wiltshire, 7 miles (11 km) north of Salisbury on the A345. It sits in the River Avon valley on the southern fringes of Salisbury Plain and has historically been considered an important river crossing area on the road from London to Warminster and Exeter. This has continued into the present with the building of the A303 across the Avon next to the town. Originally the town developed around the water meadows next to several bends in the river, but in time has spread onto the valley hillsides and absorbed part of the military airfield at Boscombe Down.
The land around Amesbury has been settled since prehistoric times, evidenced by the monument of Stonehenge. Other finds in the parish point to large scale prehistoric structures and settlements in the whole area, including Bluestonehenge at West Amesbury, the numerous other monuments around Stonehenge, the discovery of a Neolithic village in the neighbouring parish of Durrington by the Stonehenge Riverside Project, and continuing excavations at Boscombe Down where Wessex Archaeology found the Amesbury Archer and Boscombe Bowmen. They are now on display at Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. Amesbury is recognized as the oldest continuously occupied UK settlement.
The Church of England parish church of St Mary and St Melor is Grade I listed. It dates from the 12th century but was restored by William Butterfield in 1852-3. Amesbury Methodist Church was built in 1900, replacing an 1816 chapel. Christ the King Catholic church opened in 1985, replacing a 1933 building on a different site. Amesbury Baptist Church was built in 1997.
The mansion known as Amesbury Abbey is Grade I listed. It was built in 1834-1840 by architect Thomas Hopper for Sir Edmund Antrobus and replaced a house built in 1661 by John Webb for the 2nd Duke of Somerset. Diana's House and Kent House, gatehouses to the Abbey from the early 17th century, are both Grade II* listed. West Amesbury House is from the 15th century and is Grade I listed; it was remodelled in the early 20th century by Detmar Blow.

Amesbury Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around 7 miles north of Salisbury, is the town of Amesbury.
It is claimed that Amesbury is the oldest occupied settlement in Great Britain, with an archaeological dig in the area discovering footprints, tools and bones dating from circa 8000 BC. Around 4000 years later, Neolithic farmers set about moving earth during the initial stages of the construction of Stonehenge, to which Amesbury is the closest town around 2 miles east of the ancient monument.
In 979 AD a Benedictine abbey known as the Abbey of St Mary and St Melor was founded in Amesbury. This was dissolved by Henry II in 1177 who founded Amesbury Priory in its place, which was disestablished in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The connecting church dating from the late 12th century survived as the parish church, which it remains to this day.
Historically, Amesbury was a coaching stop for those travelling between London and Exeter by stagecoach between the 17th and 19th centuries, as well as visiting Stonehenge. Its visitors have included Thomas Fairfax - Parliamentary commander-in-chief during the English Civil War, and Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, who masterminded victory over the French at the Battle of Waterloo.
For centuries, Amesbury was a small market town with a population of less than 1000 recorded in the first census of 1801. From the late 19th century up until the Second World War, the Ministry of Defence bought up large areas of land on Salisbury Plain. This is the chalk plateau situated just north of Amesbury. With this, the town experienced growth as a distribution and service centre for the military population.
In 1902 a railway station opened at Amesbury. It formed part of the Bulford Camp Railway, whose line closed in 1963. Today, public transport to Amesbury consists of direct bus services from Salisbury and Andover.

Transport
Amesbury is 6 miles (10 km) from the nearest station at Grateley on the London to Salisbury line. The town's own station, Amesbury railway station, was closed in 1963 along with the rest of the Bulford Camp Railway.
Amesbury Bus Station closed in January 2014 along with the station in nearby Salisbury as a cost cutting measure,[25] but longer distance Salisbury Reds services still stop in the town. Stagecoach operate a Salisbury-Amesbury-Tidworth-Andover service,[26] and National Express coaches run Salisbury-Amesbury-London.[27]

A walk up the Avon valley with a magical approach to Stonehenge
Length
25.4 km (15.8 mi) for the full walk, including Salisbury Cathedral and Old Sarum and with lunch at The Wheatsheaf Inn at Lower Woodford.
There are several options for shortening the walk – see Walk Options below.

Explorer 130 or Landranger 184 (but some paths are not shown on the latter).
Note: The main walk directions are comprehensive but the OS map (or GPS device) is particularly recommended for the short cut option across fields into Amesbury, which has not been fully checked on the ground.
Toughness 6 out of 10; less for the shorter options. It is a long walk but with only gentle inclines.
Features
This superb walk has no major climbs but covers beautiful rolling countryside and farmland with spring flowers in April and May and fields of golden barley and wheat in high summer. You have an evocative and magical approach to Stonehenge across Salisbury Plain. After passing close to the site the route takes you down the original approach used by the Druids–The Avenue–as you set off on the final leg to Amesbury and a bus back to Salisbury city centre.
