Alton is a market town and civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is located across a valley on the source of the River Wey. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 17,816. The town is famous for its connection with Sweet Fanny Adams and Jane Austen.
The town was recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086 under the name Aoltone and was notable for having the most valuable market recorded therein. The Battle of Alton occurred in the town during the English Civil War. The town contains three secondary schools and its own railway station.
Alton is between Farnham 9 miles (14 km) to the northeast and Winchester 16 miles (26 km) to the southwest. London is 52 miles (84 km). Nearby Brockham Hill, situated 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometres) northeast of Alton, rises to 225 metres (738 feet) above sea level. The nearby village of Bentworth is the highest village in Hampshire.
There have been a number of breweries in Alton since 1763. Coors Brewing Company (among the ten largest brewers in the world) had a brewery in Alton for fifty years, which produced Carling, Grolsch and Worthington. It closed in 2015 because it lost work from Heineken. Alton was famous in the 18th century for the manufacture of paper and of dress materials including ribbed druggets, shallons, silks and serges, bombazine and figured barragons.
Alton WordFest is a celebration of the spoken and written word held in late September or early October each year. The Allen Gallery serves as Alton's art gallery. It houses a large, permanent ceramics collection as well as temporary exhibitions. Holybourne Theatre is on the site of a former Nissen hut that was converted into a theatre by German prisoners-of-war during World War II. Alton Morris was formed in 1979, and have been Morris Dancing both in the United Kingdom and abroad. They often perform at Alton street events.
The Alton Independent Cinema Project was formed in May 2011 to help secure the future of independent cinema in the town. Alton Maltings was renovated in 2004-5 and is now the home of Harvest Church and is used by community groups, charities, private users and other organisations throughout the week. The Alton Maltings claims to be the widest wooden spanned building in Hampshire.
The Curtis Museum was founded in 1856 by Dr William Curtis and houses one of the finest local history collections in Hampshire. Anstey Park, is a large open space with playing fields and a small children's playground. Alton Sports Centre is open to the public and includes a swimming pool, gym, indoor and outdoor courts.
Alton station is on the National Rail network at the end of the Alton Line with a service to London Waterloo. Alton railway station also serves as a terminus for the Mid Hants Railway commonly called 'The Watercress Line', a restored steam railway running between Alton and New Alresford, so called because it used to be used to transport fresh watercress to London.

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

In this special video I look back on my favourite memories from Alton Towers since I first started visiting in 1993 through to 2020. 10 Defunct Alton Towers Attractions - Attraction Graveyard
In this Attraction Graveyard episode, we discuss 10 defunct Alton Towers attractions. This historic park has had many attractions come and go through the years. Many were replaced for one reason or another. Rides like the Flume, Corkscrew, Black Hole, The Beast and Twirling Toadstool all enjoyed long tenures at the park but were removed due to deterioration. While Thunder Looper didn't comply with height requirements for the park. Submission and Ripsaw were two flat rides that had both gotten older and less comfortable as time went on.
Nemesis Sub Terra was a strange removal due to high operating costs and only stayed open for 3 years. Three rides occupied one building throughout the years, all of which are gone now. They are Around the World in 80 Days, Toyland Tours, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Ride. The Alton Towers Dungeon now occupies this space. While the park's development has been great overall, we thought it would be nice to stop and look back at old old defunct attractions in Alton Towers Resort that made this park what it is today.
