Top 10 Things To Do in Northumberland

My Top 10 Things To Do in Northumberland! In this video, we are exploring the Northumberland National Park, Northumberland Coast AONB and more! your ultimate guide for what to do in Northumberland!

Northumberland is an incredible place, packed full of more castles than any other county in the world, the least dense population of any county in England, and home to some of the most wild, immense and rugged landscapes I've ever seen in England. All these things make Northumberland the perfect place to explore around!

Hadrians Wall Video: Coming Soon (Sunday 15th August)

Top 10 list (in no particular order)

1. Bamburgh Castle - 0:39
Having a history dating back to the year 547, this castle is pretty breathtaking! Epic views from the ramparts and being beautifully renovated by William Armstrong make Bamburgh castle a great place to explore

2. Dunstanburgh Castle - 1:54
Located only 9 miles south of Bamburgh castle, this castle was much less fortunate and is left in ruins today, but the setting is no less epic. there is a 1-mile coastal walk from the town of Craster to access this castle as there is no parking nearby.

3/4/5. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne - 2:39
Lindisfarne Island is packed with things to do but is only accessible at low tide due to the causeway being submerged and the island getting cut off from the mainland. Firstly you can visit Lindisfarne Castle (3:09), you can also see the Boatsheds made from upturned boat hulls, walk along the coastline to the Holy Island War Memorial, explore Lindisfarne Priory, and if it's low tide walk out to St. Cuthberts Island (4:07). we visited Lindisfarne in the evening and it's a great place to catch a sunset.

6. Hadrians Wall - 4:50
Dating all the way back to 122 AD, built by the Roman emperor Hadrian, this wall is 73 miles long and stretches the whole breadth of England. we hiked a 3-mile stretch from Steel Rigg Car Park, Vis Sycamore Gap to Housesteads Roman Fort. Sycamore Gap is the most photographed tree in England and Housesteads fort is the most well preserved roman for on Hadrian's wall! this 3-mile stretch goes through Northumberland National Park and is a great hike!

7. Cragside - 6:10
Our favourite thing to do in Northumberland, Cragside is the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity. As well as this there are so many grounds full of picture-perfect, straight out of a fantasy film scenery that you can explore to your heart's content. Definitely, a must-visit on your holiday in Northumberland!

8. Alnwick - 7:43
home to the famous Alnwick Castle, famous for its many uses as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. But the town of Alnwick is a great place in itself, make sure you head down to Barter Books, a second-hand bookstore housed in the old Victorian railway station of Alnwick!

9. Newcastle upon Tyne - 8:24
Technically not in the county of Northumberland but Newcastle was the place we stayed during our trip to Northumberland, full of some really interesting architecture and great nightlife!

10. The Angel of The North - 8:47
Located in Gateshead just south of Newcastle, this statue was designed by Antony Gormley in 1998 and is considered an icon of England! Overlooking the A1 and a great place to relax and watch the sunset!

Alnwick, England | Walking Tour of A small English Town | Dreamy Destinations UK

Alnwick District is situated in the Heart Of Northumberland in North East England, with the Alnwick Castle taking pride of place in the town of Alnwick. Under the Normans and for some time after the town was the administrative town for the whole county of Northumberland. Today the district of Alnwick stretches from the North Sea Coast between Low Newton – Amble and south west to Elsdon near Otterburn and taking in about one 3rd of the Northumberland National Park.

The town is on the south bank of the River Aln, 32 miles (51 km) south of Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Scottish border, 5 miles (8 km) inland from the North Sea at Alnmouth and 34 miles (55 km) north of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The town dates to about AD 600 and thrived as an agricultural centre. Alnwick Castle was the home of the most powerful medieval northern baronial family, the Earls of Northumberland. It was a staging post on the Great North Road between Edinburgh and London. The town centre has changed relatively little, but the town has seen some growth, with several housing estates covering what had been pasture and new factory and trading estate developments along the roads to the south.

10 Best Towns to Live in England - My Subcriber's List

What are the best towns in England? Thank you, so much, dear subscribers, for bearing your minds on my video regarding the 10 best towns to live in England. I have analyzed your opinions about the towns you consider 10 best when living in England is on the balance. Indeed, England is an interesting and diverse country. Offering a variety of living experiences, I understand that different groups of people and individuals will love different features of towns. That necessarily creates different rankings of the towns in England among my subscribers. From the towns you listed as the best towns to live in England, I have compiled this as the 10 best towns to live in England, but in my order since my subscribers have varying orders.
10. Alnwick
Thanks for calling my attention to the market town of Alnwick in Northumberland, of which it’s the traditional county town. This coastal town on the River Aln's southern bank is 55 kilometers north of Newcastle upon Tyne. It's 51 kilometers south of Berwick-upon-Tweed and 8 kilometers inland from the North Sea at Alnmouth.
A lot of things contributed to making Alnwick one of the best towns to live in England. Some of the things that my subscribers saw about this town are its cheap homes, good characters, good transport links, fascinating history, and of course, low crime rates. I have no other choice than to agree with you that this town whose residents believe that living there affords them a fantastic quality of life is one of the best towns in England.
9. Weston-Super-Mare
I love the inclusion of Weston-super-Mare on my subscribers’ list. I found the communities in Weston-Super-Mare so small but the people are quite pleasant. I wholeheartedly join in ranking it among the best places in England. It’s a town with a warm and temperate climate with plenty of rainfall all year round.
For those planning for their retirement, Weston-Super-Mare is a great place due to its relaxing atmosphere and variety of interesting activities at all times of the year. The town has a lot to offer, including its beautiful beach, dozens of entertainment venues where your soul will be treated to good music, comedy, and many more. Home prices are cheap in Weston-Super-Mare also. Therefore, as a family-friendly commuter town with good links to many cities and plenty of shopping opportunities, this is a very good town to live in in England.
8. Frome
I’m happy that you all agree with all I said about the market town of Frome and you added it to your list. In addition to all that I have told you about this town sitting on the eastern flanks of the Mendip Hills which is some 20 kilometers south of the ancient town of Bath and some 172 kilometers west of London, I want to show you some of the things that make Frome one of the loveliest little towns, not only in England but also in the UK as a whole.
It has a vibrant nightlife that gives a justification for its being the fourth largest Somerset town. Also, its education, transportation, and good links will always combine to make it one of the 10 best towns to live in England.

Places to see in ( Alnmouth - UK )

Places to see in ( Alnmouth - UK )

Alnmouth is a coastal village in Northumberland, England, situated 4 miles east-south-east of Alnwick. The population of the civil parish at the 2001 Census was 562, reducing to 445 at the 2011 Census. Located at the mouth of the River Aln, the village had a port supporting a small fishing industry and engaging in national and international trade. It was for a time a leading north-east centre for the export of grain and other foodstuffs, especially to London; and specialised in the import of timber and slate. These activities to some extent shaped the village, as granaries were constructed to store grain, and sawmills and a boatyard established to process wood and build ships.

Port activities declined at the end of the 19th century, in part because of the deterioration of the port due to the shifting and silting of the river estuary, in part as trade transferred to the railways. A notable change in the course of the river during a violent storm in 1806 resulted in the loss of the remains of the village's original church and disruption to the functioning of the port and industries.

With the coming of the railways, Alnmouth transformed into a coastal resort complete with one of the earliest English golf courses, a holiday camp, bathing houses, beach huts and spacious sea-view villas. In contemporary times, Alnmouth is a well conserved picturesque coastal resort and tourist attraction, lying within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Alnmouth was established as a village by William de Vesci, who was granted a charter in 1152 to hold court and establish a settlement on a 296 acres (120 ha) spit of land in the manor of Lesbury. Eustace de Vesci was granted royal permission to establish a port and a Wednesday fish market in 1207 or 1208. Alnmouth's port, engaging in fishing and trade, has had a fitful 800-year documented history. The village was attacked and greatly depleted by the Scots in 1336. Further depredations were caused by the Black Death in 1348.

The effects of the port’s decline were offset by a new role for the village, as a holiday and second-home resort. With the coming of the railway to nearby Hipsburn in 1847( the station known then as Bilton junction then Alnmouth, now Alnmouth for Alnwick ), spacious villas with sea-views were built, granary buildings converted to residential use or demolished to make way for new cottages. Maps of 1897 show a holiday camp, garden tea-room and many beach-huts amongst the dunes.

Almouth is a village on the north-east coast of England, some 29 miles (47 km) due north of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 31 miles (50 km) south-south-east of Berwick Upon Tweed, and 4.1 miles (6.6 km) to the east-south-east of Alnwick. The village is built on a promentory on a spit of land bordered to the east by the north sea and to the south and west by the estuary of the River Aln, falling from circa 17.2 metres (56 ft) above Mean High Water level at the north of the village to 3.5 metres (11 ft) in the south-west.

Alnmouth lies at the south-east extent of low hills such run down from the Cheviot Hills to the coast. Its hinterland is an open agricultural landscape of arable land and pasture, with broadleaf woodlands in river valleys such as of the Aln, and some forestry plantations. Its history is of medieval tree-clearance and the establishment of scattered settlements and farms with complex field patterns. Almouth's coastline has multiple protected area designations. It lies at the southern end of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the (non-statutory) Northumberland Heritage Coast, both of which seek to protect its landscape in all aspects.

Alnmouth is served by Alnmouth railway station which is situated in Hipsburn, a mile inland to the west. It is on the X18 bus route from Berwick via Alnwick and Amble to Newcastle. Two roads serve access to the village. The east-west B1336 runs from the north of Alnmouth to Hipsburn, providing a connection to the A1068 Alnwick-Ashington road. This link was developed in 1856 when the Hipsburn bridge crossing the River Aln was constructed to support a direct connection with the new railway station.

( Alnmouth - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Alnmouth . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Alnmouth - UK

01:57 - Alnwick Garden
19:48 - Alnwick town
20:58 - Alnwick Castle

Watch the rest of the videos from our North of England road trip:

As part of our North of England road trip, my mother and I visited Alnwick in Northumberland. We started our day with a visit to Barter Books, a wonderful second-hand bookshop in a Victorian railway station. Barter Books is home to the original 'Keep Calm and Carry on Poster'.

After visiting Barter Books we went to the car park for both Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Castle and went straight into Alnwick Garden. While in Alnwick Garden we visited the amazing Alnwick Poison Garden and enjoyed watching the impressive Alnwick fountain and cascade.

We left Alnwick Garden and spent a little time in the town of Alnwick before heading to Alnwick Castle in the afternoon. We tour the castle, including the towers, ramparts and staterooms. Alnwick Castle was busy but we managed to enjoy our tour around.

Thank you for watching our visit to Alnwick Castle & Garden!

ALNWICK | Walk through Alnwick Town Centre to Alnwick Castle

ALNWICK | Walk through Alnwick Town Centre to Alnwick Castle
We explore Alnwick in Northumberland and walk through the town centre to Alnwick Castle, famous as the filming location for Harry Potter Quidditch scenes as well as Downton Abbey and other big TV and film productions!

Alnwick is a market town in Northumberland, England, of which it is the traditional county town. Alnwick, in Northumberland, is a coastal town located 30 miles North of Newcastle and enjoys an exceptional setting near spectacular countryside. This beautiful town was voted 2016's Best Place to Live in Britain, as judged by Country Life

Visiting Alnwick, pronounced to sound like ‘panic’, is like stepping into a fairytale, where you can dine in the twinkling treetops of one of the world’s largest treehouses, fly a broomstick at Alnwick Castle, and visit a sleeping Giant at The Alnwick Garden

From broomsticks to bookshops, tree houses to cherry blossoms, and jousts to dragons, you can't miss the magic of the cobbled market town of Alnwick when you visit Northumberland.

Alnwick Castle is (quite literally) spellbinding, as its starring role as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry casts a hint of magic over the grounds. Spot Harry Potter wand-ering the corridors, have a guided tour led by Ron Weasley, and take a broomstick lesson on the very spot where Harry, Ron and Hermione learned to fly. Harry Potter aside, get lost in the history of the medieval architecture and opulent Italianate State Rooms of the Duchess of Northumberland’s family home.

Combine your visit with a trip to The Alnwick Garden, the enchanting site that holds 4000 different plants, a Grand Cascade, a mysterious Poison Garden and a seasonal cherry orchard. From the end of April - early May, the largest collection of Japanese Taihaku cherry blossoms in the world blooms here, so perch on one of the swinging benches and watch the delicate petals flutter in the breeze. Explore The Alnwick Treehouse, where indoor branches are intertwined with sparkling fairy lights and a flickering open fire takes centre stage. Those who are a little more adventurous can reach the restaurant via a wobbly bridge that becomes even more spectacular at night as fairy lights line the outdoor area.

Don't miss Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery, which holds over 10,000 years of history in its charming stone walls. Based in Alnwick's Castle Quarter, it was previously a church, meaning you can admire its beautiful architecture while you discover artefacts, photographs and audio visual displays that showcase fascinating stories through time.

Just a short walk through Alnwick’s winding streets and past the archway of Bondgate Tower, the only remaining chunk of the town walls, will take you to Barter Books. Undoubtedly one of the cosiest cafes in the county, this once Victorian railway station is now one of the biggest antiquarian bookshops in the UK. Settle into an armchair by the open fire and grab yourself a coffee as you immerse yourself in the literary world while toy trains chug above you.

Alnwick Castle was built in the 11th Century to control and protect the border, symbolising status and power for the new Norman barons across the country. The Percy Family still live in the castle today. Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, second only to Windsor Castle.

Alnwick Castle was used as a filming location of both the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry and his classmates learned to fly broomsticks on the Outer Bailey, which is also where Harry learned to play the wizarding sport Quidditch.
