Alloa is a town in Clackmannanshire in the Central Lowlands of Scotland, on the north bank of the Firth of Forth close to the foot of the Ochil Hills 5.5 miles east of Stirling and 7.9 miles north of Falkirk. The town, formerly a burgh of barony, is the administrative centre of Clackmannanshire council. The economy relied heavily on trade through its port with mainland Europe, but competition from modern ports saw it close in 1970. The economy is now centred on retail and leisure after the closure of major industries; only one brewer and one glassmaker survive today. Alloa had a population of 18,989 at the 2001 census.
Alloa was long associated with the brewing industry, with at least nine major breweries producing ales at its height. However industrial decline during the late 20th century has led to the economy relying more on retail and leisure. The first brewing firms in the town were Younger in 1762 and Meiklejohn in 1784. Alloa ale was sent to London and George Younger had an extensive export trade to the West Indies, Egypt and the Far East. Alloa was also home to Alloa Brewery Co, developing Graham’s Golden Lager in 1927 which was renamed Skol in the 1950s.
Alloa is linked to the historic Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders housed at Stirling Castle. Many of the soldiers in WW2 fought under Montgomery at the Battle of El Alamein and Wadi Akrit where their commanding officer Lorne Campbell won a V.C. They were part of the 7th Argylls under the 51st Highland Division.
Alloa's most famous landmark is the 15th century Alloa Tower (National Trust for Scotland), the surviving part of the ancestral medieval residence of the Erskine family, the Earls of Mar. Despite extensive alterations both externally and internally, the Tower retains its original medieval wooden roof and battlements, as well as some internal features. It is one of the largest and earliest of Scottish tower houses.
The town formerly contained a large number of 17th and 18th century buildings, but most were cleared away as 'slums' in the 18th to 19th century. However, Alloa does retain some historic architecture in the form of Alloa Tower, Tobias Bauchop's House (1695),[20] Inglewood House, Gean House and Greenfield House.
Alloa Town Hall and Library was designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1886-9 at a cost of £18,008. Alloa War Memorial (1925) is by Sir Robert Lorimer with sculpture by Pilkington Jackson. After the closure of the Stirling-Alloa-Dunfermline line in 1968 and the Devon Valley Railway in 1973, rail links to the town did not exist for 40 years up until 2008. Stirling is a city in central Scotland. The market town, surrounded by rich farmland, grew up connecting the royal citadel, the medieval old town with its merchants and tradesmen, the bridge and the port. ocated on the River Forth, Stirling is the administrative centre for the Stirling council area, and is traditionally the county town of Stirlingshire. Proverbially it is the strategically important Gateway to the Highlands. It has been said that Stirling, like a huge brooch clasps Highlands and Lowlands together. Stirling's key position as the lowest bridging point of the River Forth before it broadens towards the Firth of Forth, made it a focal point for travel north or south.
Once the capital of Scotland, Stirling is visually dominated by Stirling Castle. Stirling also has a medieval parish church, the Church of the Holy Rude, where, on 29 July 1567, the infant James VI was anointed King of Scots by the Bishop of Orkney with the service concluding after a sermon by John Knox.[14] The poet King was educated by George Buchanan and grew up in Stirling. He was later also crowned King of England and Ireland on 25 July 1603, bringing closer the countries of the United Kingdom. Modern Stirling is a centre for local government, higher education, tourism, retail, and industry.
Stirling is renowned as the Gateway to the Highlands and is generally regarded as occupying a strategic position at the point where the flatter, largely undulating Scottish Lowlands meet the rugged slopes of the Highlands along the Highland Boundary Fault. Top of the Town consists of Broad Street, Castle Wynd, Ballengeich Pass, Lower Castle Hill Road, Darnley Street, Baker Street ( formerly Baxters St) and St Mary's Wynd. These streets all lead up to Stirling Castle and are the favourite haunt of tourists who stop off at the Old Town Jail, Mar's Wark, Argyll's Lodging and the castle. Ballengeich Pass leads to the graveyard at Ballengeich and the Castle Wynd winds past the old graveyard. The Top of the Town from Broad Street upwards is renowned for its cobblestoned roads, and cars can be heard rattling over the cobblestones on the way down. When Stirling was temporarily under Anglo-Saxon sway, according to a 9th-century legend, it was attacked by Danish invaders. The sound of a wolf roused a sentry, however, who alerted his garrison, which forced a Viking retreat. This led to the wolf being adopted as a symbol of the town as is shown on the 1511 Stirling Jug. The area is today known as Wolfcraig.
Even today the wolf appears with a goshawk on the council's coat of arms along with the recently chosen motto: Steadfast as the Rock.

One of the principal royal strongholds of the Kingdom of Scotland, Stirling was created a royal burgh by King David I in 1130. In 2002, as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee, Stirling was granted city status.

Wemyss Bay Railway station in Inverclyde Scotland has been rated as one of the 10 best railway stations in the United Kingdom.
Located some 26 Miles (42 Km) West of Glasgow it served as a terminus station and connection point to the MacBraye ferry services providing portage to the Isle of Bute.
Designed by James Miller in 1903 under contract for the Caledonian RailwayCompany, It is one of the most striking examples of creative use of Glass and steel curves. It is a category A listing and deserves special recognition for it’s outstanding architectural qualities.
Sadly the station suffered from years of neglect, thankfully reversed when a joint consortium of Network Rail, Inverclyde Council and the Scottish government embarked on a major refurbishment scheme in June 2014 – taking almost 2 years to complete. At conclusion of the works the station buildings and adjacent ferry terminal were fully restored.
Construction of a single track line to Wemyss Bay from Greenock commenced in 1862 providing an important link to Clyde Steamer Services. The provision of this branch line cut the journey time to the Islands by half, with travel time to Rothsay on the Isle of Bute cut to just an hour and a half – instead of a 3 hour journey by steamer from Glasgow.
The formation of the Wemyss Bay Steamboat Company, who were vested with ownership of the connecting Steamers opened the route in May 1865. It is easy to imagine all the Victorian travellers in their finery having a day out “Doon the Watter”. The route also provided access to Largs, Millport and the Isle of Cumbrae.
The line was electrified by British Rail in 1967 using the 25000 V Alternating Current system in use elsewhere in the country.
There were three platforms in use up until 1987, with two still in use today.
Services to Wemyss Bay are hourly from Glasgow and take approximately 55 minutes.

Filmed aboard the double decker from the second storey and upper deck of the city tour bus. This video offers a wide angle view of the charming streets and countryside of Central Scotland, including the Ochil Hills Range.
Alloa is a small town in Clackmannanshire and 8 miles east of the city of Stirling.
The town developed at a ford and ferry crossing on the River Forth and expanded rapidly during the early industrial revolution. The main industries were glass-ware, textiles, ship building and brewing. Today the town’s economy is centered around retail and leisure.
Alloa's main attraction is the carefully restored Alloa Tower. This medieval tower is Scotland’s largest and oldest keep. It was built on land acquired by the Eriskine family before passing into the hands of the Earls of Mar. Standing on the parapet, the Firth of Forth stretches away before you. Alloa Tower is one of many which can be discovered on the 'Tower Trail' through the area.

The A977 connects the M90 motorway at Kinross, Perthshire to Kincardine Bridge in Fife. The A977 road passes through several villages and hamlets on its route; including Forestmill, Blairingone, Powmill, Crook of Devon,. Clackmannan; Scottish Gaelic: Clach Mhanainn, perhaps meaning Stone of Manau . During the 12th century, the area formed part of the lands controlled by the abbots of Cambuskenneth. Later it became associated with the Bruce family. A crater on asteroid 253 Mathilde is named after Clackmannan. Because Mathilde is a dark, carbonaceous body, its craters have been named after famous coalfields from across the world. The Clackmannan Group is the name given to a suite of rocks of late Dinantian and Namurian age laid down during the Carboniferous period in the Midland Valley of Scotland

Autumn Road Trip Drive With Music On History Visit To Alloa Clackmannanshire Scotland
Tour Scotland Autumn travel video, with Scottish music, of a road trip drive, on ancestry, genealogy, history visit to the town of Alloa in Clackmannanshire. It is located on the north bank of the Forth at the spot where some say it ceases to be the River Forth and becomes the Firth of Forth. In 1813 the first steamboat started to operate out of Alloa harbour. After the improvements were made to the harbour during the 18th century, Alloa thrived as a river port through which the products of Glasgow manufacture were exported to continental Europe. The town was known for its weaving and glassmaking industries well into the 19th and early 20th centuries. Alloa was long associated with the brewing industry, with at least nine major breweries producing ales at its height.
George Brown was born in Alloa on November 29, 1818, he was a Scottish born Canadian journalist, politician and one of the Fathers of Confederation. A noted Reform politician, he is best known as the founder and editor of the Toronto Globe. On March 25, 1880, a former Globe employee, George Bennett, dismissed by a foreman, shot George Brown at the Globe office. Brown caught his hand and pushed the gun down, but Bennett managed to shoot Brown in the leg. What seemed to be a minor injury turned gangrenous, and seven weeks later, on May 9, 1880, Brown died from the wound. Brown was buried at Toronto Necropolis. Bennett was hanged for the crime.
Andrew Norman Meldrum was born in 1876 in Alloa and was educated at Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen, the Royal College of Science in London, England, and the University of Aberdeen. He taught at the universities of Aberdeen, Liverpool, Sheffield and Manchester, and entered the Indian Education Service in 1912. His appointments in India included the Chair of Chemistry at the Madhavlal Ranchodal Science Institute in Ahmedabad, and finally, from 1925 until his retirement in 1931, principal of the Royal Institute of Science (University of Bombay). A Scottish scientist known for his work in organic chemistry and for his studies of the history of chemistry. It has been claimed that Meldrum's acid is the only chemical to be named after a Scotsman. He died in 1934 in Edinburgh.
John Jameson, born 1740, died 1823, was originally a lawyer from Alloa in Scotland before he founded his eponymous whisky distillery in Dublin in 1780. Previous to founding the distillery, he married Margaret Haig, born 1753, died 1815. in 1768. She was the eldest daughter of John Haig, the famous whisky distiller in Scotland. John and Margaret had a family of 16 children, eight sons and eight daughters.
