Japan Off The Beaten Path: Autumn In Akita Prefecture | Japan Travel Guide
Japan Off The Beaten Path is a new series on my channel, where I show you more of the unknown areas/prefectures in Japan and encourage you to travel and visit areas other than the common places such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
In this first episode, we visit and explore around Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, the main island of Japan.
I came here during Autumn(end of October), which is the perfect time to come to see the autumn foliage!

As for transportation, it takes 4 hours to get from Tokyo station to Akita station via the Akita Komachi Bullet Train.
It costs around ¥17,000($160 USD) however if you have the JR pass you just have to pay the small fee of the reserved seat on the Shinkansen(all seats are reserved).
Or if you are going up to Hokkaido or coming back down from Hokkaido, you can change at the Shin-Aomori station and take the local JR train down to Odate station.
Going back to Tokyo from Shin-Aomori station is also possible by taking the Hayabusa bullet train. (Around ¥17,000)
Even though Akita is in Japan, each prefecture is so unique in it's own way - I learned so much from this trip and could see a different side of Japan.. I hope to share this kind of Japan more and more with you through my channel :)

秋田県は「八幡平」「十和田湖」「白神山地」など、隣県と接する観光名所も多く、全国的に知名度が高い紅葉名所は少ないイメージですが、地元の人々に親しまれている隠れた紅葉絶景がたくさん見られます。「田沢湖」や「桃洞滝」など秋田県が誇る紅葉絶景を満喫してください！
Here are 10 autumn leaves viewing spots in Akita Prefecture, where there are many hidden gems known only to those in the know!
Akita Prefecture has many sightseeing spots bordering on neighboring prefectures such as Hachimantai, Lake Towada, and Shirakami Sanchi. Although there are not many nationally known autumn leaves viewing spots in Akita Prefecture, there are many hidden places that are well known by local people. Enjoy the spectacular autumn leaves at Lake Tazawa and Toudou Falls, which are the pride of Akita Prefecture!

■秋田八幡平・大沼 ( 9月下旬～10月下旬 )
八幡平（はちまんたい）は、岩手県と秋田県にまたがる台地状火山で「日本百名山」の一つに数えられます。八幡平一帯は地形がなだらかで沼や湿原が多く、標高1,614 mの山頂付近にも「八幡沼」「メガネ沼」など複数の沼が点在し、駐車場から散策道を歩いて1時間ほどで一周できます。
大沼は八幡平の秋田県側の中腹にある沼で、一帯は「森林浴の森百選」に選定されています。周辺には後生掛温泉や玉川温泉などの温泉地が点在し、森林浴と温泉浴が楽しめる大自然の宝庫です。「森林セラピー基地」としても認定されており、大沼を中心に森林セラピーロードも整備されています。大沼の周囲を一周できる自然探勝路もあり、森の中も通りながら30分ほどで歩いて一周できます。
■玉川温泉 ( 10月中旬～11月上旬 )
玉川温泉は、八幡平の秋田県側山麓にある温泉で、「大噴」と呼ばれる湧出口から強酸性泉が湧出し、豊富な湯量と効能から、湯治場として人気があります。玉川温泉には地熱の高い地獄地帯が存在し、人々がゴザを引いて岩盤浴を行う光景が見られます。
■宝仙湖 ( 10月中旬～11月上旬 )
宝仙湖（ほうせんこ）は、玉川ダムの建設によって形成された人造湖で、水没地域が「宝仙平」と呼ばれていたことが名称の由来です。
玉川ダムは一級河川・雄物川水系の玉川に建設されたダムで、「ダム湖百選」にも選定されています。
■田沢湖・田沢湖高原 ( 10月中旬～11月上旬 )
田沢湖は秋田県中東部に位置する湖で、その最大深度は423.4ｍ、湖として日本一の水深を誇る神秘的な湖です。田沢湖高原は、田沢湖の東に位置する温泉郷で、眼前に田沢湖を一望できる大パノラマが広がります。田沢湖高原から乳頭温泉エリアへ行く途中には、大規模なブナの二次林が保護されています。
■十和田湖 ( 10月中旬～下旬 )
十和田湖（とわだこ）は、青森県と秋田県にまたがるカルデラ湖で、国の「特別名勝」に指定されています。秋田県側にある「発荷峠（はっかとうげ）」をご紹介します。
■白神山地 岳岱自然観察教育林 ( 10月中旬～下旬 )
岳岱（だけだい）自然観察教育林は、秋田県藤里町にある約12haのブナ原生林で、世界遺産・白神山地のブナ林を気軽に体験できる森です。ブナと苔むした巨岩との調和が素晴らしく、「森林浴」を楽しみながら世界遺産の森を満喫できます。森を歩いていると、ブナの巨木にも出会えます。ブナの寿命は通常300年前後といわれていますが、樹齢400年を超える老木は「400年ブナ」と呼ばれます。
■きみまち阪県立自然公園 ( 10月中旬～11月上旬 )
きみまち阪公園は、秋田県北部の能代市にある景勝地で、東西に流れる米代川に沿って断崖絶壁の屏風岩がそびえ立ち、春の桜・お花見や、秋の紅葉スポットとして有名です。この地を訪れた明治天皇と皇后のロマンチックな逸話が残り、お二人の仲にあやかり、良縁祈願ができる場所もあります。きみまち阪公園から、眼下に米代川と七座山（ななくらさん）の景色も楽しめます
■桃洞滝 ( 10月中旬～下旬 )
桃洞滝（とうどうのたき）は、秋田県東部にある森吉山の山麓にかかる滝で、落差約20m、別名「女滝（めたき）」と呼ばれ、子宝の滝、安産の滝として地元の人々に親しまれています。桃洞渓谷（とうどうけいこく）には、Ｕ字渓谷に大小のおう穴と滝が点在し、
「森吉山野生鳥獣センター」から約4kmの遊歩道が整備され、清流沿いに続くコースは「天国の散歩道」と呼ばれています。紅葉の時期は特に美しく、多くのハイカーが訪れます。
■岨谷峡 ( 10月下旬～11月上旬 )
岨谷峡（そうやきょう）は、秋田県のちょうど真ん中に位置する峡谷で、「日本の紅葉百選」に選定されています。岩見川の上流域に、断崖絶壁が300ｍ以上にわたって続く峡谷で、高くそびえ立つ岩と、澄み切った清流を眺めながら散策できます。
秋田県のちょうどど真ん中にあることから「へそ公園」も整備され、遠くには出羽山地の山々を望み、紅葉が美しいスポットです。
■秋の宮温泉郷・湯の又大滝 ( 10月下旬～11月上旬 )
湯の又大滝は、秋田県南部の秋の宮温泉郷（あきのみやおんせんきょう）の近くにある滝で、落差は約40ｍで、ゆざわジオパークに属する大きな滝です。秋の宮温泉の一帯は「日本の紅葉百選」にも選定されており、秋には、湯の又大滝を背に壮大で美しい紅葉を見られます。

I hope this video gave you some insight on what life can be like in the countryside of Japan! I love the countryside more as it's less explored by tourists so you really can see this raw kind of Japan and understand the local culture and history more.
Each prefecture has it's own speciality and history so what better way to immerse yourself in the culture than to try a homestay experience? :) I know a lot of you are worried if you can't speak Japanese but honestly you will be fine! It's not the language that matters, it's the connection between two people so step out of your comfort zone and try it. Japanese people in the countryside tend to be very friendly too and I'm sure they will give you a helping hand if you are lost even if they don't speak English.
If you do decide to go, let me know how your experience was and also tell Ishigaki-san I said hi! Hopefully she remembers me?! LOL

'Resort Shirakami' lovely landscape trip / from Akita to Goshogawara
The Resort Shirakami runs on the Gono line through the stunning seaside scenery of Shirakami-Sanchi, a World Heritage Site. In 2018, Shirakami-Sanchi celebrated its 25th year since its registration as a World Heritage Site.
This time, I reserved a compartment. It's very nice and comfottable !
