Zwickau and Schneeberg in Saxony | Destination Culture: Hannah Hummel on Tour in Germany
The city of Zwickau in eastern Germany has a long and varied history of car production and industrial design. Its story is told in the August Horch Museum – beginning with the production of Horch cars, to Audis, to the East German car, the Trabant. On her trip to Zwickau, Hannah Hummel discovers the city’s car history, as well as its art and cultural history. Both the composer Robert Schumann and the expressionist painter and printmaker Max Pechstein were born in Zwickau. This episode of Destination Culture also takes viewers to Schneeberg – a creative hub in Saxony, where students from around the world study fashion and textile design.

GERMANY: Diemelsee, lake in Sauerland
Boat trip on Lake Diemel (German: Diemelsee), which is located between the Sauerland mountains, near Willingen.
The lake/reservoir is located in North Rhine-Westphalia (bordering Hesse). It lies in the district Waldeck-Frankenberg, Germany.
The Diemel Dam (Diemeltalsperre) was built in the period 1912 to 1924.
Diemelsee is located in Sauerland, a rural, hilly area, in parts heavily forested and, apart from the major valleys, sparsely inhabited.

Zwickau is a city located in the eastern part of Germany in the state of Saxony. Zwickau is the fourth-largest city of Saxony after Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz that we all visited here on POPtravel.
Zwickau has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages when it was an important trading center. Today, Zwickau is a medium-sized city with a population of around 90,000 people. It was also a center of the German textile industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The notable German composer Robert Schuman was born in the house on the corner of Zwickau's main market square in 1810.
We start our walking tour right at the Robert Schuman monument. As we walk through the city, we will see both the historical and modern aspects of Zwickau. There are many beautiful buildings in the city center, such as the Gothic-style St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the 15th century, and the Renaissance-style town hall, which was built in the 16th century.
We circle the city center, get out to the Schwanenteichpark in the western side of the city. Walking back to the city center we also see some street art. Our tour leads again through the city's streets towards to the Zwickauer Mulde on the eastern side of the city center. We walk a bit on the Muldenpromenade before we end our tour near our starting point - at Zwickau's market square.

Westerwaldsteig - Hiking in Germany 4K
Join us on our tour on the Westerwaldsteig, a 235 km long-distance hiking trail in Germany. On one part of it, The Weltende Steig (World's End Climb) you will be hiking right along the cliff of the Lister river valley. The hike is only 6 km in length with around 1000 feet (ca. 305 m) of elevation gain. Great experience in rural Germany.

The Westerwald (German pronunciation: [ˈvɛstɐvalt]; literally 'Western forest') is a low mountain range on the right bank of the river Rhine in the German federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a part of the Rhenish Massif (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge or Rhenish Slate Mountains). Its highest elevation, at 657 m above sea level, is the Fuchskaute in the High Westerwald.
Tourist attractions include the Dornburg (394 metres), site of some Celtic ruins from La Tène times (5th to 1st century BC), found in the community of the same name, and Limburg an der Lahn, a town with a mediaeval centre.
The geologically old, heavily eroded range of the Westerwald is in its northern parts overlaid by a volcanic upland made of Neogene basalt layers. It covers an area of some 50 × 70 km, and thereby roughly 3 000 km², making the Westerwald one of (Germany)’s biggest mountain ranges by area. In areas of subsidence, it has in its flatter western part (Lower Westerwald) the characteristics of rolling hills. Typical for the economy of the Upper Westerwald, some 40% of which is actually wooded, are traditional slate mining, clay quarrying, diabase and basalt mining, pottery and the iron ore industry, and among other things mining in the Siegerländer Erzrevier (roughly Siegerland Ore Grounds). Despite its relatively slight elevation, the Westerwald has for a low mountain range a typical agreeable climate. Economically and culturally, it belongs among Germany's best known mountain ranges.
The name Westerwald was first mentioned in 1048 in a document from the Electorate of Trier and described at that time the woodlands (Wald is German for forest or woods) around the three churches in Bad Marienberg, Rennerod and Emmerichenhain, west of the royal court at Herborn. Only since the mid 19th century has the name come into common usage for the whole range.
The High Westerwald has since the Middle Ages formed the heart of the Herrschaft zum (also vom or auf dem) Westerwald (Lordship over the Westerwald). This comprised the three court districts of Marienberg, Emmerichenhain and Neukirch. The Lordship later fell under the governance of the Lordship or County of Beilstein.

Wanderung am 30.10.2021
Mal wieder ein Wanderwochenende im Sauerland für mich. Am Vortag war ich bei goldenem Herbstwetter an den Bruchhauser Steinen, nun geht es weiter mit der Etappe 2 des Diemelstiegs, die ich eigentlich Ende August hätte laufen wollen. Wegen Dauerregen über 2 Tage fiel das buchstäblich ins Wasser. Um die bessere Busverbindung zu haben und um mir den Höhepunkt dieser Etappe, die St. Muffert Klippe, für das Ende aufzuheben, laufen ich entgegen der üblichen Laufrichtung von Adorf nach Heringhausen.

Diemelsteig Etappe 2 - von Adorf nach Schweinsbühl
Wanderung am 28.08.2021
Nachdem ich im Juli 2020 die 3 Etappen des Uplandsteiges gelaufen bin, möchte ich jetzt den Diemelsteig erwandern. Aus logistischen Gründen wird die gut 20km lange Etappe 2 als Erste begangen.
Von meiner Unterkunft in Willingen fahre ich mit dem Bus (kostenlos mit der Gästekarte Sauerland Card) vom Bahnhof Willingen nach Adorf, wo ich nach kurzer Ortsrunde auf den Diemelsteig aufbreche. Das Wetter wird besser, als es angesagt war, erst am Ende der Wanderung muss ich den Schirm zücken, bevor ich in Schweinsbühl ins Anrufsammeltaxi steige, das mich direkt zum Hotel zurück bringt. Dafür noch einmal herzlichen Dank an den Fahrer!
Leider wird es mit den beiden anderen Etappen an den Folgetagen nichts mehr, das Wetter ist grottenschlecht. Aber im Oktober mache ich genau dort weiter.

Moxy Franfurt Hotel - During my trip to Germany, I had the chance to stay at the lovely Moxy Hotel, located in the absolute centre of Frankfurt. It’s a modern and playful hotel, and one of the best hotels in Frankfurt!
From the airport, I took the train to Hauptwache Station close to the hotel, where the the staff helped me to check in. Staff were very friendly and things all went fast. I was treated great as a Bonvoy Gold member.
The breakfast buffet, included typical german breakfast food , however not as extensive as normal due to Covid.
