Belgium – Best Places to Visit - In this video we would like to tell you a little about the best places to visit in Belgium as well as provide some tips on languages, currency, driving, parking, camping and shopping.
Belgium is a really interesting country to visit.
There are still at least 30 different languages in the EU and French and Dutch are the main languages spoken as well as some German, particularly in the east.
Most younger people in larger towns and cities across Europe speak English as their second language, however in the rural areas sometimes not a lot of English is spoken, particularly by older people.
There are around 13 different currencies in the EU however the Euro has been the Belgian currency since around 2002.
Belgium covers an area of 30,688 km2 and has a population of more than 11.4 million.
Vignettes are not required for driving on the Belgium road networks however there are some toll roads.
Credit cards are accepted widely in Belgium, however, some vendors only accept Visa but not Mastercard, or vice versa.
There are different rules regarding “parking” and “camping” – many countries allow “overnight parking” as long as you don't camp there – the definition of “camping” is if you set up anything outside of your vehicle eg tables and chairs, and or BBQ, and or put up your sun awning and or position your vehicle on levelling ramps etc – then that is classified as camping.
Wild camping is illegal in Belgium, however if you want to try your luck ask the police and or local council authority.

En este video nos encontramos en Aarschot, una ciudad belga ubicada en el valle del río Demer, en la provincia de Brabante Flamenco. En la Edad Media sobre sus colinas se encontraban algunos de los viñedos más apreciados de toda Europa. Hoy en día, estas colinas, que rodean la ciudad, están cubiertas de bosques y de huertos frutales. Descubran junto a nosotros esta hermosa ciudad y sus monumentos mas preciados. Además aprovechamos esta oportunidad para recorrer en bicicleta sus increibles pistas ciclables hasta llegar al Castillo de Van Horst y al molino flamenco Houten staakmolen Hondsheuvel. Welcome to Aarschot, Belgium, where the Christmas market is a wonderland for families. Join us in this enchanting journey as we explore the best kids' friendly attractions, activities, and festive celebrations at the Aarschot Christmas Market.
Unlike any other Christmas market, Aarschot puts most emphasis for kids' fun brimming with joyful activities, treats, crafts, carousel rides, engaging activities, play area, petting zoo, entertainment for kids' and most importantly bars and cafés for the parents to have fun and delightful memories.
There are various events to keep your kids engaged, and the highlight being the Christmas tractor Parade. Local farmers showcase their tractors decorated with Christmas lights and colours bringing to life the festive atmosphere and celebrating the festive season.
The city is located in the east-central part of Flanders, close to Leuven and about 40km south of Brussels. Known for its rich history and picturesque landmarks, including the beguinage, a UNESCO world heritage-listed site which finds its roots since mid-13th century living under the shadow of the Church of Our Lady, a gothic building constructed between 1337 and 1450 with its 85 metres high tower that adores the city center. The city can easily be called the mill town of the Hageland with 6 mills (three windmills and three watermills), most of still operational and located in and around the city. Additionally, the Demer valley and its scenic landscapes provides opportunities for outdoor activities. The best part is when the city comes alive during two annual celebrations, one in February for its famous carnival and second for its Christmas market which could be the most kids' friendly Christmas market in Belgium or may be in the whole of Europe.
How to reach:
If you are coming from Brussels – take the Hasselt & Tongeren train that goes direct from Nord station to Aarschot. The ride takes about 24min. Alternatively, you can also take a train to Leuven from Brussels and then connect for a 13minutes ride to Aarschot. There are also buses from Leuven towards Turnhout that stops in Aarschot. The De Lijn bus 305 takes about 22minutes.
To drive: It’s a 35min ride from Brussels via E40 and E314.

Belgium - Brussels and Bruges
During our European vacation in 2018, we spent three days and two nights in Belgium. The Eurostar train left London at 6:47am. The ride was smooth and comfortable. At 150mph, you hardly feel like you are moving.
Brussels was the first stop for a few hours. Stored out backpacks at the train station and met in the main square for a walking tour. After the tour, we had some fries and headed back to the train station for the next train the Bruge.
We sat with a young local on the train who was commuting from work in Brussels to Ghent and had a very nice conversation. The hosts at the Speelmansrei Bed & Breakfast were awesome and would recommend them! Exploring the city, parks and churches and enjoying the great food and beer took care of the next couple days.

My wife and I spent 23 days in Europe visiting 7 countries in 2018. Planning began about 8 months before the trip. The goal was to see as much as we could but at a slow pace. Visiting 7 countries in 23 days sounds like a lot but we did not feel that way during the trip. One way to use time efficiently during travel is to utilize the night trains. We took two trips between countries on an overnight train. This allowed for us to combine travel and lodging in the same time period.
Utilizing travel hacking allowed us to save money on air fare and some lodging. The flights from Chicago, Illinois to London, England were purchased with airline miles and some lodging was purchased with hotel points. Traveling light was a priority for us as we each had one backpack. This was a fantastic way to go. It was so easy to navigate on and off trains and walk to all our destinations.
We used AirBnB in Prague and it was great. The place was perfect and the host was very nice and helpful. If you have not tried Airbnb, Save $40 off your first stay with my Airbnb referral link . In addition, there was no extra cost to text or use data with our cell phones in any of the countries we visited. Prior to our European trip we switched cell phone providers to Google Fi. The connectivity was great and we had a small fee for a phone call or two that we made. If you are interested in Google Fi, Get a $20 credit with my Google Fi referral link . One final expense saving tip to save on ATM fees. This is always a concern for people traveling in foreign countries. Our first order of business when arriving in a new country was to find an ATM and withdraw some currency. By utilizing the Fidelity cash management debit card. ALL our ATM fees were reimbursed by Fidelity. I learned about this card in this Go Curry Cracker blog article

Het klonk heel mooi, een kerstmarkt in Aarschot, maar erg veel speciaals was het niet. Wel vond ik het zeer fijn dat de plaatselijke verenigingen hier hun eigen hut hadden, wat getuigt van een mooi initiatief!
