Coming from Serbia, I found it to be important to visit the Danube town of Vukovar, a town that was just about obliterated during the 3 month Siege of Vukovar in 1991. This town saw some serious devastation and death at the start of the Yugoslav Wars and I wanted to see for myself some of the things that happened. Throughout the region, you can see buildings with bullet holes and cannon holes including the Vukovar water tower or Vukovarski vodotoranj.
Next day, I set off for the capital city of Zagreb where I was once again, welcomed with rain and cold weather, the third capital city where it rained miserably. But when it cleared up the next day, I had a good opportunity to walk around and enjoy the city. Zagreb doesn't usually get much praise in comparison to Croatia's cities on the coast, but it's a beautiful cosmopolitan city with gorgeous buildings and city center.
Next day, I set off for Slovenia for 2 week before I made a grand return to explore Croatia's infamous coastline. :)

Upoznajmo graničare ravnice, općine Gunja i Drenovce
Smješteni u zapadnom Srijemu na lijevoj obali Save, uz sami rub na granici s Bosnom čuvaju svoje običaje i tradiciju. Ovaj prekrasan kraj nazivaju Cvelferija. Naziv Cvelferija potječe iz vojnoga jezika. U doba kada je Hrvatska bila podijeljena na pukovnije, a one na niže jedinice satnije, područje ovih sela činilo je dvanaestu satniju. Od njemačkog zwölf što znači dvanaest ovaj kraj prozvan je Cvelferijom. To su bila sela koja su se nalazila na granici s Turcima, pa su ovdašnji ljudi prozvani Graničari. Budi se Cvelferija sa svim svojim običajima i pričama što dokazuje i manifestacija RASPJEVANA CVELFERIJA tradicionalna folklorno-kulturna manifestacija kojoj je cilj očuvati i promovirati cvelferske plesove i običaje.

Trpeza ovoga kraja široka je kao i srca ljudi. Tu su proizvodi od suhomesnatih delicija, domaćih jaja, kolača, meda, vina, sokova, voćnih rakija i likera do raznih vrsta sireva i začina.

“Knjižnica godine”
Nova Općinska narodna knjižnica Drenovci jedna je od rijetkih ustanova na području Hrvatske koja je iz temelja namjenskih građena i opremana. Priznanje “Knjižnica godine” zasigurno je najveća i najznačajnija nagrada koju jedna knjižnica može dobiti.
Fond knjižnice broji nešto više od 38,000 primjeraka, što je prema standardima za narodne knjižnice više nego dva puta veći broj od očekivanoga. Ova prekrasna knjižnica je mjesto susreta, učenja , zabave, obrazovanja. Za one najmlađe od 3 do 6 godina postoji igraonica “Ne idem još u školu, ali idem u knjižnicu” i dajemo sve pohvale za ovu kreativnu ideju.
Povijest
Još prije 115 godina davne 1906 god. osnovana je Drenovačka knjižnica i čitaonica na čijim je temeljima izgrađena nova i suvremeno opremljena knjižnica.

Stadion od cigli poplavljenih kuća
Gunja-sudbinski vezana uz rijeku Savu koja je 2014 god. probila nasip i poplavila. Hrabri ljudi velikog srca , široke duše dobili su novi stadion. Stadion ponosno stoji u svoj svojoj ljepoti kao spomenik tragediji. U njega je ugrađeno 12,000 cigli iz poplavom uništenih kuća.
Ovo je najljepši mali stadion koji ćete vidjeti - vjerujte.
Ono šta je poplava napravila tim dragim ljudima je toliko tužno i toliko žalosno da kada dođete na ovo područje dođe Vam da im se naklonite. i.

Ova prekrasna džamija može biti poticaj za sve nas koji posjetimo ovaj kraj , primjer kako treba živjeti i unapređivati međuljudske odnose i izgrađivati zajednicu.
Otkrijte ljepote ovih mjesta u ravnicama Srijema prepunih zlatnih žitnih polja i zelenih šuma. Posjetite Šumanovce, Svetište skrovite Gospe Šumanovačke, smješteno na tromeđi Gunja-Drenovci-Đurići koje datira iz 14. stoljeća. Tišina i mir hrastove šume, cvrkut ptica, vjetar u krošnjama i sunčane zrake čine jedan poseban ugođaj.
U 2023 godini svetište će proslaviti 650 godina postojanja. Stotinjak metara od crkve je u zaštićenom dijelu hrastove šume kapelica i bunar s ljekovitom vodom.
Kada dođe vikend i želite napuniti baterije i provesti lijepi dan i upoznati nova mjesta dođite u Gunju i Drenovce.

East Croatia is easily forgotten by many, including tourists and locals. Join us on this trip where we explored the cities of Slavonia. We found many interesting places, such as Croatian Sahara, and magnificent cathedrals. The preserved fortress ruins in different cities brings us back in history. Going up the Vukovar Water Tower taught us a valuable lesson in Croatia's fight for independence and yet enjoy a marvellous view at the same time.
Other than the sights, we share our accommodation and some restaurants where we enjoyed the food.

Slavonia Vlog / Visiting Županja and Vukovar
My grandfather was from Županja. When I was little, I used to spend time there with him and my family, and those are the memories I cherish the most. Don't know if I actually remember being there or just from what I've seen on the photos, but I love going back there and listening to the stories of my grandfather, his youth and seeing all my family. I never really lived there, but whenever I come to visit I feel like being home; I feel more connected than to some places I've actually lived in. I love Slavonia. It's by far my favourite region in the whole Croatia. Here is the vlog from my visit this September. Enjoy.

ZAGREB ???????? Sljeme mountain hike | Vero and Justin (Croatia travel vlog video)
Watch in 4K ✧ In this February 2020 Croatia travel vlog, we hiked up the 1,000 m Zagreb mountain and rewarded ourselves with mountain top beers and fries. Who knew there was a beautiful mountain just North of Zagreb? ⛰
The first time we hiked a mountain, it was back in Canada last summer at Lake Louise at 400 m elevation (see vlog if interested: We are always surprised how our body temperature fluctuates when you hike- you go from three layers to t-shirt in 10 minutes! This hike was special because we had the trail to ourselves. That's just one of the perks of low-season. Although the trees weren't lush and green, the nature was beautiful. This hike brought us to the hilltop of Sljeme where one restaurant was open and we enjoyed beers and french fries! Seeing as the entry to the mountain is free, this made for a budget friendly day ????????
