Ozu is located in the western area of Ehime prefecture, the area has an old townscape that centres on Ozu castle where you can feel its history. Moreover, the area is blessed with natural scenery such as the Hijikawa river running through the central area and the ocean and mountains.

In addition, one feature is its famous local food such as “Hijikawa Ramen” and “Ozu no Imotaki” (like a hotpot).

The Ozu tourist area is split into 4 areas, along the Hijikawa river basin, Kawabe area, Hijikawa area, Ozu area and Nagahama area. In the upper basin in Kawabe and Hijikawa area there are woodlands, but in the middle basin in Ozu area, the city area spreads out centring on Ozu Castle. In Nagahama area in the lower basin, the land faces the sea and there is a fishing harbour.

Described by many as the little Kyoto of Ehime, Ozu does not only offer one of Japan's most stunning gardens, the Garyu Sanso but also the chance to enjoy the city in a whole new angle by roaming its historic streets also known as Ohanahan Dori (streets).

While walking around these streets is highly recommended when visiting Ozu, it is possible to visit Ozu’s old town while being comfortably seated in an elegant Jinrikisha (a traditional Japanese rickshaw). Available most of the time all year long, rickshaw rides can be booked, when available, on spot directly from Ozu’s tourist information center.

【020】Ehime Ozu Castle

Ozu Castle (大洲城, Ōzujō) stands on a hill by Hijikawa River in the northwestern part of downtown Ozu. Ozu City (大洲, Ōzu) is located in Ehime Prefecture on the western coast of Shikoku. The city emerged during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as a castle town. The recently reconstructed Ozu Castle stands proudly in the city center as the local icon. The castle has its origins in the 1300s, and it was rebuilt a few times over the years upon destruction by fire, as well as natural and human-caused disasters. The current castle has been reconstructed in phases since the 1950s, and the reconstruction of the main keep was finally completed in 2004.

Different from many other castles that were rebuilt in the last century using ferro concrete, the main keep of Ozu Castle was crafted mainly with wood and traditional construction techniques. That skill added the castle more value. As a result, it looks close to the original castle not only from the outside but also inside. The main keep is flanked by turrets on two sides, an interesting feature that is quite rare among Japanese castles, many of which have just solitary standing main keeps.

Inside the castle buildings, there are exhibits about the history of Ozu, maps about the local topography from past to present, models of the castle, and displays of armors and other items belonging to past feudal lords. Ascending to the top of the four story main keep rewards visitors with good views over the city and the river.

Schedule&cost
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30)
Closed: No closing days
Admission:500 yen (castle only), 800 yen (castle and Garyu Sanso)

Access info
Ozu Castle can be accessed in a 20-30 minute walk from Iyo-Ozu Station. Alternatively, take the city loop bus from the station to Ozu Honmachi (大洲本町) bus stop (5 minutes, 100 yen, 1-2 buses per hour), from which the castle is a 5-10 minute walk

Japan Trip: Old castle town. Many attractive spots in Ozu, Ehime, Japan

Japan Trip: Old castle town. Many attractive spots in Ozu, Ehime, Japan

Ozu City (大洲, Ōzu) is located in Ehime Prefecture on the western coast of Shikoku. The city emerged during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as a castle town. A section of the old town remains today with nostalgic alleys and old-fashioned houses, serving as remembrance both to the days of the Edo Period and the Meiji Period (1868-1912).
There are the following attractions and events.
Garyu Sanso; country-style, yet graceful villa with prominent garden.
Ozu Castle; it has a rare appearance among Japanese castles.
Ozu Old Town; nostalgic atmosphere with old fashioned houses.
The recently reconstructed Ozu Castle stands proudly in the city center as the local icon.

The picturesque Hijikawa River flows through the heart of Ozu City. This is reputedly one of the three greatest destinations in Japan to see cormorant fishing (ukai) in the summer, along with Nagaragawa River in Gifu Prefecture and Mikumagawa River in Oita Prefecture. Garyu Sanso, a villa that superbly combines aestheticism and serenity, stands just east of the old town, on the banks of Hijikawa River.

24 Hours in Kumamoto ???? First Time Visit

Kumamoto City is the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The city is most famous for its castle. The Kumamoto Castle was completed in 1607 by Kato Kiyomasa. It was destroyed by fire in 1877 and rebuilt in 1960 but was damaged again by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. After undergoing repairs, the main tower of the Castle reopened in 2021.
We also visited the beautiful Japanese garden, Suizenji Jojuen. It was built by Lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi in the 17th century as a site for a tea house and a temple. The location was chosen for its natural spring and high-quality water.
