What to do in Kyushu, Japan: Beppu, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Arita, Nagasaki

35+ things to do in Kyushu, Japan!

Kyushu is Japan's third largest island, located southwest of the main island Honshu and is made up of seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima.

It's also one of my favourite regions in Japan and such an underrated and undiscovered region.

Here are some of my recommendations for first-time visitors! It's best to stay 2-3 days in each prefecture so you can take your time to explore!

I've included everything from nature spots, activities/experiences, Japanese food, to things to do at night in the list!

I had so much fun filming and exploring Kyushu - it really had everything I wanted all in one region!
Hot springs for when you want to relax, nature for when you want to escape the city, activities for all ages, and also delicious fresh food!
Hope you can check out some of these places the next time you visit Kyushu as well!

Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan: 10 Must-visit Places and food you must try in Fukuoka.

#japan #prefecture #travelguide

Fukuoka Prefecture is located on the northern shore of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. It is known for its vibrant cities, rich cultural history, and lush natural beauty. Fukuoka City, the prefecture's capital and largest city, is an exciting blend of modern attractions and traditional charm. The city is renowned for its dynamic food scene, notably the delicious Hakata ramen, and for being a hub of industry and commerce in Western Japan.

In addition to the bustling city life, Fukuoka Prefecture boasts stunning natural landscapes including mountains, hot springs, and beautiful coastlines, offering numerous outdoor activities for visitors. Historically, the region served as a gateway for continental influences, due to its proximity to the Asian mainland, shaping its rich cultural and historical tapestry that includes ancient temples and shrines, traditional festivals, and crafts.

Whether it's exploring the hip streets of Tenjin in Fukuoka city, relaxing in a hot spring in the onsen town of Beppu, or discovering the cultural treasures of Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture presents an intriguing fusion of modernity and tradition, ideal for travelers seeking to experience the diversity and charm of Japan.

Kyushu Travel Guide|Japan’s third largest and southernmost Island

Kyushu, Japan’s third largest and southernmost island, is a cultural collection of natural beauty, historic charm, spiritual connections, world-renowned sake breweries, and much more. The island’s seven prefectures, while unique in their destinations and offerings, are connected by an ever-present air of enchantment. Kyushu is also a convenient place to travel as it is one of the best connected travel hubs in Japan, making domestic and international travel worry free.

Immerse yourself in the spiritual environment of Takachiho, Miyazaki, a town that is considered to be the birthplace of Japan. The area’s rustic charm is pervasive throughout the island. From Kitsuki City’s samurai houses to Kumamoto castle to the Edo-styled buildings of Yanagawa City, Kyushu’s traditional architecture will transport you to the past. Complementary to the island’s buildings are its artisan glass and pottery. Visit Kagoshima to behold the rare Satsuma Kiriko glassware, and visit Arita City to purchase some Arita yaki porcelain. In Nagasaki prefecture, learn about historic, yet somber events at the Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. All the while, enjoy Kyushu’s natural beauty including stunning views of Kujukushima, which translates to “99 islands,” from Nagasaki’s coast and Mount Aso, an active volcano in Kumamoto. Later, relax in one of Oita prefecture’s thousands of hot springs or unwind in the steam sand baths of Ibusuki, Kagohimsa.

Kyushu also has no shortage of delicious eats. In Saga prefecture, pair your food with some sake, and in Miyazaki, sample the internationally acclaimed Kuri Kuro, or dark chestnut ale.

Lose yourself on this unforgettable island.

Yunotsubo Street
Is the main downtown shopping area that connects Kinrin Lake with Yufuin Station. The street has more than 50 different stores, including restaurants and cafes offering dishes made with fresh, local ingredients, and souvenir shops where visitors can find unique items.

Strolling through these towns does in a way takes you back around the Edo area with its waterways and mountains embracing that vibrant town.

Along the street you will find off to the side a small theme area named Yufuin floral village modeled after the Cotswolds area which have been named as some of the world's beautiful village which was the inspiration for the Harry Potter series. There is a small mini zoo area, and they also have a section for owl lovers where you can hold and take a picture of real living owls.

Definetely a great place to visit with neighboring Onsens (hot springs) which all come from a natural source. When you are in the area, don't forget to visit Mt. Aso as well.
