21 Things do to in HAKONE, Japan | Hakone Travel Guide

These are my carefully selected 21 tips and things to do in Hakone, including gems like Ninja Cafe Fuma, Ryokan Senkei, Eating Black Eggs, cruising on a Pirate Boat, Joro Spiders and dipping into a wine and coffee spa at Yunessun water park. Hakone is one of the most beautiful regions near Tokyo. A visit to Hakone should be paired with a stay at a luxurious ryokan and a visit to the bizarre Yunessun water park. I highly recommend staying at least 2 days and 2 nights in the Hakone region which makes the purchase of the Hakone Freepass the more logical.

Staying in Hakone for 2 days will allow you to see every attraction on the Hakone circle tour. The circle tour starts at Yumoto-Hakone main station and takes you into the mountains through the Owakudani crater and by ropeway back to Lake Ashi at which you jump on a pirate boat which transports you to the other side of the lake from which you take a bus to the Yumoto-Hakone main station again. A magical journey indeed!

During my first night I stayed at budget ryokan, Gaku Guesthouse which was conveniently located next to Gora station. In Gora you will find the Ninja Cafe Fuma where you can throw real ninja stars aka shiruken and feast on local ninja fried snacks.

In Gora you will also find the Yunessun water park which has a wine, coffee, green tea and sake spa including a massive outdoor pool area but also attractions like the Hakone Open-Air museum (Japan's first).

After one night in Gora jump on the cable car and ropeway towards Owakudani where you can try out the unique black eggs which has gotten their color from being boiled into the volcano hot springs and Sulphur. On a clear day you are able to walk around this mesmerizing valley. Owakudani literally means Giant Boiling Valley.

Once you ate your black eggs continue on the ropeway towards Lake Ashi from where you jump on a pirate boat and cruise Lake Ashi while you enjoy beautiful views of Mount Fuji and the Hakone Shrine.

At the pirate boat dock, you can either visit the Hakone Shrine or jump on a bus back to Yumoto-Hakone station where you should spend your second night in a luxurious ryokan including a traditional Japanese kaiseki dinner and sleep in Japanese futons all presented by a Nakai, a Japanese house maid. On the third day before departing Hakone jump into an onsen, Japanese hot spring to conclude this magical experience in the Hakone region.

My favorite part of this trip was the Yunessun water park, dipping in a wine and coffee spa was such a memorable experience that it wasn't too uncommon seeing literally everyone taking selfies. Make sure to watch my complete YouTube episode on the Yunessun water park.

???? 7-Day Tokyo Pocket Itinerary:

???? Essential Japan Rail Pass:

In conclusion, had I known about the Hakone freepass prior I would have saved myself a lot of money but due to the lack of research on my part I missed out on this great opportunity. Then, she travels across the lake on a pirate ship, and reenacts some of her favorite boat-related movie scenes. After her Oscar-worthy performance, she enjoys a Japanese hot pot and grated mountain yam. Finally, she explores Hakone shrine and ends up at a cha-ya (tea shop) that’s stood the test of time.

For those who want more of a workout, it's a great starting place to hike to the other mountains in the Japan alps!

Stay tuned for part 2 where I share with you what you can do around the city and a hidden gem in Nagano!

$50 Vs. $500 Ryokan Hotel in Hakone, Japan | Kaiseki Dinner & Onsen Experience

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a $50 Ryokan and a $500 Ryokan experience in Hakone, Japan? The difference is quite significant ranging from amenities like a private onsen, your own nakai (Japanese maid), a Japanese kaiseki lunch & dinner and even a private pickup and drop off van. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!

Book Gaku Guesthouse:

Book Ryokan Senkei:

Buy Now - Hakone Freepass:

(includes free transportation, attractions and museums in Hakone)

First off you may wonder, what is a ryokan? A ryokan is a type of traditional Japanese inn that typically feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas where visitors may wear yukata and talk with the owner.

Photos of my experience:

It had been my dream for over a decade to stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan in Hakone. So, I was extremely pumped to jump into my traditional Japanese robe the minute I walked into the agari-kamachi (or entrance room). The ryokan did include being served by a nakai, a Japanese house maid who serves you green tea, dinner, breakfast and makes the futons ready for sleeping (Japanese sleeping quilts)

The best thing about staying at a luxurious ryokan is the kaiseki dinner which is a traditional Japanese multi-course dinner with a wide variety of Japanese dishes consisting primarily out of vegetables with fish and meat all served on tiny dishes and in bit sizes. During the kaiseki dinner you sit on zaisu which are legless chairs which can be uncomfortable to sit on for non-Japanese people.

The luxurious ryokan did include a fancy onsen (Japanese hot spring) on the rooftop which is one of the most relaxing experiences you can have in Japan.

To do a proper comparison I stayed a cheap $50 hotel as well. Gaku Guesthouse offers a Japanese style room with sleeping futons, clean amenities including a laundry machine and a fancy Japanese bidet toilet but also a brand-new billiards table in the garage. Gaku Guesthouse is a great place to meet other travelers as well.

I was surprised how quiet it was in the Japanese mountains compared to the inner city of Tokyo.

Make sure to stay at least 1 night at a luxurious ryokan in Hakone to complete your journey to Japan. You'll have incredible stories to share with your friends and family.

This video is about a weekend getaway to Hakone. Hakone is close to Tokyo and is a very popular travel destination. Hakone is famous for hot springs, natural beauty, views of Mt. Fuji and views across Lake Ashinoko. Hakone can be enjoyed year-round with its stunning seasonal landscape and many events. On the first day of the trip we went to Owakudani. Owakudani is one of most famous viewpoints in Hakone, where you can observe the intense volcanic activity from up close. One of the local specialties is the “Kurotamago (black eggs)”, whose main trait is in the shells that turn black due to a chemical reaction with geothermal energy and volcanic gas. Then we headed straight to The Prince Hakone Lake Ashinoko for a one day stay Lake and nature views await guests in Prince Hakone Hotel Lake Ashinoko’s softly lit rooms, with some rooms offering views of Mount Fuji. This hotel features hot-spring baths overlooking the lake Ashinoko and offers a lot of activities. The second day started with a visit to the Hakone Shrine. Then we went for cruising the lake Ashinoko which is a popular sightseeing activity. One unique and fun way you can cruise Lake Ashi is by a pirate ship. The next location was Mishima Skywalk which is a picturesque scenery spot where you can see Mt. Fuji from a gigantic suspension bridge. A total length of 400m, it is Japan’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge. Also experience thrilling activities at Forest Adventure! On the Long Zip Slide, you can experience the exhilarating feeling of gliding in the air 70m above ground for 300m while gazing at Mt. Fuji.
