Top Things To Do In Osijek, Croatia! Discover the Eastern Region of Slavonia!

Our Patreon (A way to support these videos):

Osijek is the fourth largest city in Croatia. It’s not huge, it's about a hundred thousand people, but it's actually the biggest city in this region, in the eastern part of Croatia. It’s along the River Drava, it’s a great little city and and lots to do!

You can take a stroll through Ante Starčević Square, which is the main square in Osijek. It typically is filled with people walking around and there are shops that line all three sides.

It's actually in the shape of a triangle which is kind of unique for a for a main square, so it should be called the main triangle.

There is a beautiful statue here of Ante Starčević. He's been known as father of the nation because he always fought for the rights of Croats within Austria-Hungary. And there's also a very beautiful sculpture by Ivan Meštrović, a famous Croatian sculptor.

Osijek was actually the first Croatian city to have a tram back in 1884, and now it stands as one of two cities with the tram line, the other being Zagreb. But of course they weren't electric way back then, they were pulled by horses! It wasn't until 1926 when the trams became electric.

Tvrđa

The big fortress complex in Osijek is called Tvrđa. The whole complex, historically, it was the most important cultural, economic, administrative, and military center of Slavonia, so this region in Croatia.

This whole fortress complex used to have walls surrounding it but they were taken down, they were demolished in the 20th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Tvrđa was really a multi-ethnic town. People from Bulgaria, Italy, France, Germany, Austria and other countries were living there together and they were learning Croatian!

In the middle of the fortress is the main square, Holy Trinity Square. It has a huge baroque statue of Holy Trinity, which was actually a votive of the people of Osijek to God, so that the plague would never return. It was built in 1729, and it's absolutely gorgeous.

Water Gate

Water Gate is a well-preserved entrance to the fortress where the walls used to be. There were actually four gates into Tvrđa, but Water Gate is the only gate that remains, and it got it’s name because it faces the River Drava, so it faces the water.

A very interesting monument in Osijek is of a Fićo (an old Fiat car) and a tank. ,
It represents a moment in the war back in ’91, when a Croatian soldier had parked his Fićo in an intersection as a sign of protest against the Yugoslavian National Army that was coming.

But of course the army wanted to show their power and aggression and so they ran right over the Fićo. There's actually a story behind it that the driver in the tank was Croatian and he didn’t want to run over the car, but his commander had put a gun to his back and said to press the gas and run over the car, and so he did.

Later apparently, the driver of the Fićo and the driver of the tank met and they they became friends. So it's quite the story of power, aggression and protest.

The Chapel of Sorrows

This sweet little chapel is a baroque building from 1780, and legend has it that a young man actually was sentenced to death because he confessed to a theft that he never committed in order to protect his girlfriend, so this has become a Romeo and Juliet type of story in Osijek.

The famous pedestrian bridge in Osijek

The bridge has become an iconic symbol of the city. It was built in 1980 in just three months, so that was pretty quick. It goes over the River Drava and it is about 35 meters high, six meters wide, and across it goes about 200 meters. It's the only pedestrian bridge and in the evening it actually lights up in beautiful colors!

Osijek Beer

Osječko Pivo is home to Osijek and it was the very first Croatian beer, dating back to 1664. You should definitely give it a try if you find yourself in the city. Very refreshing and you can taste the history :)

10 things to do in Rovinj, Croatia Travel Guide | Rovigno Day Trip from Pula Transcript:

Today we are heading on a day trip. How exciting. Yes. So we've been based in Pula for a little while. Yep. And today we are going to Rovinj (Rovigno). It is only like 30 or 40 minutes away by bus. Yeah. So it is going to make for an awesome day trip. We've basically scheduled the whole day in Rovinj. We are leaving in the morning and we're probably going to come back after sunset.

After eating breakfast, we decided to do a little bit of exploring along the waterfront. We walked the full length of the marina stopping to take photos of the brightly painted buildings with matching window shutters, plus rows and rows of boats. Then once we reached the end, we were treated to these postcard-perfect shots of Rovinj from a distance.

A fun fact about Rovinj: though it’s now connected to the mainland, this once used to be an island. It was connected in 1763 as part of a land reclamation project under the Venetian Empire, which also explains why certain parts of the city may remind you of Venice.

After wandering around for a few hours, it was finally time for lunch, so we returned to the waterfront looking for a seaside restaurant.

Audrey had the shrimp risotto, I had shrimp pizza, and yes, we both shared with the cats, who had learned to swat if you approached empty-handed.

Atop the hill, we reached St. Euphemia’s Church. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can even try climbing the bell tower’s infamous creaking wooden steps. Such are the steps’ reputation, that there’s even a bulletin board inside the church with photos of what to expect. We didn’t make it to the top, thought I was happy to settle for terrace views.

Later that afternoon, the skies finally cleared, so we enjoyed another walk along the harbour as well as a gelato stop along the way.

So what’s the verdict on Rovinj? You can definitely explore the town in one day, but if you have a few days to spare, this would make an even better base to explore the rest of Istria.

Dakovo - Croatia

Đakovo is a town in the region of Slavonia, Croatia. Đakovo is the centre of the fertile and rich Đakovo region
In Roman antiquity the settlement Certissia stood on the same spot until it disappeared during the Migration Period.
The settlement's first mention in historical documents dates from 1239 when Béla IV of Hungary granted it to the Diocese of Bosnia, and the Bishop moved his seat here in 1246. The predecessor to the newer St. Peter's Cathedral was built in 1355. In 1374 the settlement is documented under the name Dyacou. Croatian rebels in 1386 on 25 July captured Queen Mary of Hungary and her mother Elizabeth near the settlement.
The Ottoman rule over Đakovo started in 1536 and lasted for nearly 150 years. It was a kaza administrative center in Sanjak of Pojega and was known as Yakova during this period. In 1805 a Lipizzan horse herd was evacuated to Đakovo when Napoleon invaded Austria & Hungary and a part of the herd remained permanently there. In a 1910 census the settlement's total population of 6304 was made of 4894 Croatians, 890 Germans, 249 Hungarians and 164 Serbians. In the late 19th and early 20th century the settlement was a district capital in the Virovitica County of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia within the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen. From 1 December 1941 until 7 July 1942 the Ustaše established and operated the Đakovo internment camp, mostly for Jewish, Roma and Serb women and children.

Visit East Croatia: Slavonia - Osijek, Vukovar, Vinkovci, Dakovo, Slavonski Brod

East Croatia is easily forgotten by many, including tourists and locals. Join us on this trip where we explored the cities of Slavonia. We found many interesting places, such as Croatian Sahara, and magnificent cathedrals. The preserved fortress ruins in different cities brings us back in history. Going up the Vukovar Water Tower taught us a valuable lesson in Croatia's fight for independence and yet enjoy a marvellous view at the same time.

Other than the sights, we share our accommodation and some restaurants where we enjoyed the food.

Never Do This In Croatia ???????? 5 Things You DON'T DO In Hrvatska

In today's Croatia travel vlog, I discuss this topic: Never Do This In Croatia / Don't Do This in Hrvatska. Hrvatska is another name for Croatia in case you're wondering.

This is not a Croatia travel guide but a list of things not to do in Croatia. Most of the footage in this video is from Split Croatia, the island of Hvar and Dubrovnik Croatia. However, I spent most of my time in Split Croatia. I did have a couple Croatians help me come up with this list!

Croatia is one of the best places to visit in my opinion. You have beaches, cities, mountains, and lots of castles and old world charm. When you visit Croatia there are certain things that you probably shouldn't do. I got some input from my Croatia friends to make this list.

Never leave trash on the beach. Croatia is a beautiful country with amazing beaches. Croatians have done a really good job keeping their beaches very clean compared to many other places. There are public trash cans every where and they are are picked up regularly. There is no excuse for littering, when there is always a trashcan within walking distance at Croatian beaches.

Never talk about politics. There are lots of sensitive topics around the war with Serbia and the break up of Yugoslavia. Most families were impacted by the war in some way, so these are very personal subjects. It’s better not to get into these discussions.

Never forget to tip. I was so accustomed to not tipping in Asia that I didn’t tip at the first Croatian place I ate. I later learned that 10% is customary and you can bump that up to 15% for exceptional service. This is a great travel tip Croatia!

In most cases, never take the train in Croatia. Take the bus instead. Unlike a lot of Europe, Croatia’s train system isn’t the best. They don’t run very often. For instance there are only two train times to go from Zagreb to Split (or Dubrovnik Croatia). And they take a long time. The train ride from Zagreb to Split takes almost 6 hours when you can just drive it in 4 of even better take a 45 min flight that’ll only cost around $50 US dollars. But don’t fret - the busses are great!

Never call Croatia Yugoslavia or the former Yugoslavia. Similar to discussing politics, this is a sensitive subject. This would be like calling the US, the former England. Yes, we were a part of England before, but we are not the former England. Same thing. Croatia is Croatia….Yugoslavia was another country that doesn’t exist any longer.

I filmed this Croatia travel vlog sitting on the beautiful Adriatic Sea watching the sunrise.

Croatia full of magic, so travel Croatia and like this video!

Đakovo is located in the central and most beautiful part of Slavonia, at 111 metres above sea level. The best way to go sightseeing and experience Đakovo is on foot. The town’s pride, the Cathedral’s towers which rise above the town like its guardians, are visible from far away.
Almost all of the Town’s visitors know of the St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Lipizzan horses, the trademarks of Đakovo, which have been preserved for generations.
Đakovo offers an abundance of historical, cultural and natural sites, which can be seen in a day, but to really experience them, one needs to stay longer. Numerous religious buildings and cultural-historic monuments are located in the historical centre of Đakovo, which make the town recognizable and unique.
The main street, Ulica pape Ivana Pavla II (Pope John Paul II Street), commonly known as Korzo, stretches from the St. Peter’s Cathedral to the Church of All Saints. The town’s core has kept its Art Noveau features which developed in the 18th and 19th century. This gives Đakovo its allure and shapes the visitors’ experience, especially during nice weather when the main street becomes a promenade and a place for socializing, and the numerous cafes and patisseries located there invite to a break.

Visiting Slavonski Brod city in Croatia

Visiting Slavonski Brod during summer time while Embroideries of Đakovo were in the city close by, not many people stayed here in town so it seems almost empty...
