10 Best Beaches in Sri Lanka - East/South/West Coast (Tropical Escape #2)
In this episode I show you the best beaches in Sri Lanka from the west coast over the south coast to the lesser know east coast - along the way we sample some street food and checkout the wildlife.

Sri Lanka is a year-round holiday destination with two monsoon seasons and is home to some incredible beaches on both sides of the island. If you want to go to the south and west coast of Sri Lanka the best time to visit is from December to April. For the east coast the time between April and August is best.
We start our journey in Beruwala and Bentota, this very long sand beach is without any doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka and only a 2h drive from the capital. The next stops are the beaches of Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna close to Galle.
Further down south you can find Mirissa, a relaxed little town which is a popular starting point for whale watching, too. Afterwards it’s time to spot some wildlife in the Yala National Park which has also a beach...but swimming is not allowed, so we’ll go for a leopard safari instead.
The east coast of Sri Lanka is still fairly unknown, therefore I decided to show you this part of the island more in-depth starting with Arugam Bay, a popular surf spot. Pasikudah is a longer drive to the north which is totally worth it - the locals even state it is the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka!
Our last stop is Trincomalee in the north east of the country with its wide beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli. A short boat ride off the main land you should visit Pigeon island which has not only a beautiful beach but an incredible maritime life…so make sure to bring some snorkeling gear!
This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using buses, trains, cars and a domestic flight (Trincomalee-Colombo) - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do on the coast of Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka is an island country in South East Asia which has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. After a 30 year long civil war which ended in 2009 the diverse country is now opening up more an more for tourism. The goal of this series is to give you an introduction to the country and the neighboring Maldives.
I'm excited to share all my experiences in Sri Lanka & the Maldives over the course of the next 3-4 weeks with you. In the next episodes I will take you to the south and east coast of Sri Lanka - we will go on an leopard safari, will eat the local street food and enjoy the beaches in Trincomalee as well as Arugam Bay.

Sri Lanka ist ein Inselstaat im indischen Ozean, welcher südöstlich von Indien und nordöstlich der Malediven liegt. Die dokumentierte Geschichte des Landes reicht bis zu 3000 Jahre zurück, es gibt jedoch Hinweise auf Siedlungen die bereits vor 125.000 Jahren im heutigen Sri Lanka lagen. Sri Lanka war seit der britischen Kolonialzeit bis 1972 als Ceylon bekannt.
Nachdem ich euch Sri Lankas Zentrum & das Hochland in der ersten Folge von The Tropical Escape vorgestellt habe…zeige ich euch nun die schönsten Strände des Landes, mache eine kulinarischen Abstecher und nehme euch mit zu den Leoparden im Yala Nationalpark
Sri Lanka beheimatet zahlreiche traumhafte Strände und ist ein ganzjähriges Reiseziel, da der Monsun in den einzelnen Regionen genau zu entgegengesetzten Zeiten auftritt. Somit ist die optimale Reisezeit für den Süden und die Westküste von Dezember bis April, während die Ostküste von April bis August am empfehlenswertesten ist.

I have ranked the best beaches in the south of Sri Lanka to be 5.Tangalle 4.Bentota 3.Hikkaduwa 2.Unawatuna and 1.Marissa.
Like I say in the video although l am counting down to my favourite beach, my least favourite & favourite is only marginally apart.
I also mention Dalawella beach, jungle beach, whale watching & turtle rescues centre. Each of these beaches have something unique about them that make them all worth visiting.

After exploring the mountains, tea fields, tribal villages and plenty of hikes - we've arrived at the coastal towns. Starting off the trip at Tangalle, we got breakfast at Salt Breeze Cafe before heading to a special Turtle Point beach.
Irfan swam jumped in the ocean and was shocked at what he saw! This has to be the most memorable day we spent in Sri Lanka!

The great thing: this country is a year-round holiday destination due to the fact that the monsoon is different depending on the area.
If you want to go to the south and west coast of Sri Lanka the best time to visit is from December to April. For the east coast the time between April and September is the best time. To make things easier we added a recommendation when to go to each of the listed beach spots below.
1) Beruwala & Bentota
This very long sand beach is without any doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. Besides the fact that it is palm-lined it is a great destionation for families as the water is very shallow here. Moreover Beruwala is located very close to the capital Colombo (only a 2h drive).

October to mid of April
Things to do in Beruwala & Bentota:
The Masjid-ul-Abrar is the oldest mosque of Sri Lanka // make a river safari at the Bentota river, located south of Beruwala and spot crocodiles, birds and varanidaes // water activities like snorkeling and diving at the nearby reef // turtle research center Kosgoda (a short drive south)
2) Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa is a very popular beach and is situated 100km south of Colombo. Especially during the high season this is the place to go for party lovers as there are many clubs and bars nearby.

The nearby reef is a great spot for snorkeling
3) Unawatuna & Galle
The old town and the Fort of Galle are part of the UNESCO World Heritage and absolutely worth a visit. Pastel colored houses with wooden patios and small shops selling jewelry and handicrafts. Don't miss out to climb the walls to enjoy the view to the sea and watch sea turtles.
Galle itself doesn't have great beaches – therefore you should go for the short busride to Unawatuna.

Old town of Galle // climb the lighthouse for the best views // go running at the jungle beach of Unawatuna in the morning and watch the cute animals!
4) Mirissa
This beach is much calmer than Unawatuna – it is less touristy and offers colorful sunset as well as a beach full of beautiful mussels and stones.
Best time to visit Mirissa:
October to mid of April

Most tourists are coming for whale watching. You can book the expeditions mostly directly at your accommodation. If you are lucky you'll come to see blue whales // Watch the famous Stick-Fishermen doing their job in the evening at the rocks close to the beach
5) Yala
he beach of Yala is the only one in this list where you are not able to go for a swim due to dangerous currents. Nevertheless it is a great spot for a walk along the beach and watch the power of the water. Even more exciting: right next door you are able to see elephants, crocodile and even leopards on a safari!
Best time to visit Yala:
April – August (best time for safaris)
Things to do in Yala:
The wildlife safaris are the number one reason for a visit to Yala – beside the animals the huge park is also impressive in matters of its landscape. I recommend staying for several days and going on more than just one safari!
6) Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay is a surf beach on the east coast. As it is a predominantly muslim area you should wear long clothes if you're a woman. Regarding the prices Arugam Bay is much more expensive than the beaches on the west coast.

April till September

If you walk south along the beach for about an hour you'll get to a lake area with crocodiles and elephant // In the morning you can watch the fisherman doing their work at the beach
7) Uppuveli, Nilaveli & Trincomalee
Uppuveli Beach is situated at the outskirts of Trincomalee and offers wide beaches this is why the majority of the hotels and resorts can be found here. If you manage to get up early you'll be rewarded with a beautiful sunrise at the beach.
Nilaveli is located a bit more out of town and therefore it is much quiter here. You can do excursions to Pigeon Island from both beaches, the coral reef is considered to be the best snorkeling spot in Sri Lanka – a wide range of exotic animals can be found here (even reef sharks!).
Best time to visit Trincomalee:
April till September is the best time but also during the monsoon season you can be lucky. I was there at the beginning of November, only excursions have been quite hard to find or have not been possible.
