8 Top Things to Do in Bahawalpur - Pakistan | The City of Palaces & Nawabs [4K] Ultra HD

Bahawalpur

The historical significance of the Abbasid dynasty's rule over the Bahawalpur princely state for two centuries is underscored by its establishment during the mid-18th century amid the weakening grip of the Mughal Empire. This era of transition and decentralized authority led to the emergence of numerous semi-autonomous states and fiefdoms across the Indian subcontinent, with around 70 notable princely states being recognized for their prominence and significance, titled as “Highness” by their rulers. Among them was the State of Bahawalpur, covering an expanse of 45,911 square kilometers near the confluence of the Sutlej and Chenab rivers.

Named after its inaugural Nawab, Mohamad Bahawal Khan II, the State of Bahawalpur witnessed the reign of 8 successive generations before being integrated into Pakistan in October 1955. Presently, Bahawalpur stands as the 12th largest city in Pakistan and is renowned as the region of Rohi - Cholistan desert.

Faiz Mahal: The Majestic Relic of the Talpur Dynasty | Khairpur, Sindh [4K] Ultra HD

Faiz Mahal, Khairpur

Built in 1798 by Mir Sohrab Khan, this majestic palace complex was supposed to serve as the primary court of the Talpurs. The Talpur Dynasty is truly one of the most popular and recognized royal lineages in Pakistan, that came to power after defeating the Kalhora Dynasty and ruled over Khairpur for three centuries (1783 to 1955). However, after abolition of all princely states in 1955, the Talpur state of Khairpur, became a part of Sindh province of Pakistan.

On entering inside the palace one can see the portraits of Maharajas and Princes in the centre of the Mahal giving the impression of sheer royalty in addition to the usual comfort and luxury of palaces. The majestic palace is popularly known as ‘Lakhi Bangla’ as it cost the owners Rs.100,000 (one lakh) at that time.

The grand architectural masterpiece now serves as the home of the last, “symbolic” Talpur rulers.

This palace is considered an architectural heritage site. The site of this palace was selected by rolling down a large stone from a cliff nearby & the stone stopped at Doqsai village, and the palace was built at the spot where the stone stopped.

The YABGO dynasty members continued to live there even after their kingdom was abolished in 1972.

The short video that I recorded shows the main entrance of the palace, and on the left side of the main entrance was an apple tree garden, which wasn't open for the public at that time.

Sadiq Garh Palace: Pakistan's Most Beautiful Abandoned Chateau in Dera Nawab Sahib, Bahawalpur [4K]

Sadiq Garh Palace: Pakistan's Most Beautiful Abandoned Chateau in Dera Nawab Sahib, Bahawalpur [4K]

Regal and majestic, the three-storey heritage palace epitomises the classic silhouette of a fairytale castle. Situated on 125 acres of land on the outskirts of Dera Nawab Sahib in a town in Ahmadpur East tehsil of Bahawalpur, a former princely state that merged into Pakistan in 1955. The majestic property was constructed by Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan (IV) in 1882 and while it has been abandoned for last 3 decades, still retains many of its striking original features. With 120 rooms the palace boasts almost 40,000 square feet of inside space in need of rescue.

With its grand domes, stately entrances and beautiful courtyards, it's hard to understand how this exquisite palace ended up deserted by the Nawabs. Shrouded in mystery and left to weather the sands of time, this abandoned stately building is hiding a treasure trove of secrets within its eerie walls. The Viceroy of India Lord Mountbatten, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Shah Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi were among the prominent leaders who once stayed at this white palace as the guests of the nawab.

In view of the country's burgeoning tourist trade, the need to conserve this crumbling heritage site has now become all the more pronounced. The three-storey palace may either be given to Army Authorities for its conservation on the lines of Noor, Gulzar and Darbar Mahals or to the Agha Khan Trust for its reuse as a luxury hotel. This site possesses immense tourism potential being close to Derawar Fort and the Lal Suhanra National Park. Nonetheless, across India, many other former royal households and stately buildings have opened up in a similar way. The most gorgeous and regal palaces and forts that have been turned into luxury hotels are: Umaid Bhawan, Rambagh, Udaipur Bilas, Deogarh, City Palace and Fort Rajwada.
