SWAKOPMUND, NAMIBIA: Africa's MOST BEAUTIFUL Town? Travel Guide to ALL SIGHTS
Welcome to Namibia! And welcome to part 3 of an incredible road trip through one of the least populated countries in the world. This country about 1,5 time the size of France mainly consists of desert landscape. In the previous two episodes we traveled along the coast of South Africa from Cape Town, to visit the first highlight of the country and the absolute number one sight: the Sossusvlei. After that we drove through no man's land to the industrial port city of Walvis Bay. We spotted flamingoes crossing the dunes in the endless desert and visited pink salt lakes.
In this episode we continue the drive along the coast to another tourist hot spot on the ocean shore. The town of Swakopmund is the most beautiful preserved colonial town, with a lot of German influences. The architecture is outstanding, but Swakopmund has more to offer. It's the beating heart of Namibian culture. We also visit the National Marine Aquarium, some shipwrecks on the so called Skeleton Coast and thousands of seals at Cape Cross. Up next will be Etosha National Park for some safari drives.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines. Zanzibar and Tanzania are already destination number 21 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for a year. Follow us on this world tour, first in Tanzania, from Zanzibar to the safari parks on the mainland and then to many more beautiful destinations in Africa! Gelateria
The Raith's Gelateria in Swakopmund is the coastal branch of Raith Bake. Offering a variety of continental German style specialities. We also serve delicious Italian style ice cream, which you can enjoy as take-away in a cone or our biodegradable cups or as styled cups in our cozy atmosphere.
We offer a selection of quality hams, sausages, spreads, salamis and other cold meats products as part of our superior range and supply the catering and hospitality industry with high quality cold meats.

We've been here several times during our trip because every time we think of where to eat brunch or lunch, no other place evokes happy smiles like this cafe. It's the absolute difference between food made fresh every day and food reheated from the day before. You can taste the quality!
They have a huge menu as well as daily items. Fast and friendly staff, and delicious baked goods. The potato salad made me want to cry happy tears, and the poppyseed swirly pastry with strong coffee after lunch gave me energy for that afternoon's shopping adventure. Everyone we saw ordered soup and I'm determined to try that next. The only problem is that vacation is coming to an end and I'm running out of days to try everything that looks good.
Excellent food and service
We love Raith's and never miss a chance for a breakfast everytime we visit Swakopmund. This year we were too late for breakfast so we had lunch instead. Our server actually remembered us from the last time we were here which is something I always love. The food was delicious as always... I had the tomato soup which was really delicious and my husband tried the quiche and meat pie. We ordered the spaghetti Bolognese for our toddler and he also loved that. You are always guaranteed fresh food and great service. Highly recommended!
Deliciousness has a name!
Forget about calories and treat yourself to the best selection of German treats- from traditional cheesecake to Stollen, in December. Jurgen, the Meister Backer for 52 years now, is on-site and makes the best delicacies in town. Efficient service and happy staff.
Best sandwiches in Namibia!
A brilliant place we bought filled rolls here twice and they were superb. Freshly prepared with a good choice of fillings they could not have been bettered.
Masters
On the wall behind the counter hangs the certificates of Raith's personnel having been sent to Germany to complete their training in making German meats and sausages. They are masters! Whether sit down, or from the deli or a take away ice cream, everything is super. It has become custom that upon leaving Swakopmund I make a last turn at Raith's to buy some snacks/sausages for the long road to Windhoek.
