Zug, Switzerland

If you're staying in Zürich, Switzerland for a few days you might want to consider a day trip to a nearby town and one of the closest destinations is the historic city of Zug. It has a small historic center with several remarkable buildings and quaint Swiss atmosphere. Zug is half an hour away by train and all the trains leave twice an hour from Zürich, so it's really easy to get there.
Please subscribe:

It's a direct train -- you don't have to change – and you’ll enjoy some nice scenery along the way. When you arrive in Zug you'll notice that the train station is quite modern. If you think you're coming to visit an old historic town, which is really the plan, you'll be surprised at how beautiful and up-to-date the station is. In fact Zug is a modern city with a historical town, which is what we’re here to see. You don’t want to walk from the train station to the old town, which is just too far, over a mile, so get on the public bus. A short ride take you through the modern part along the lakeshore, and you'll soon be arriving within a few blocks of the old town. Now come along on our video tour of Zug’s Old Town.

Zurich, Switzerland part 2: Bahnhofstrasse, trams, museums, Zug

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Continuing our in-depth look at Zürich, Switzerland focusing on the modern side of the city showing you the great boulevard, the Bahnhofstrasse lined with thriving, modern retail frontage from end to end, and some of Zürich's other shopping lanes.
Please subscribe:
We will go out on a lake boat ride, take you on an excursion to a nearby town, visit the main museums, and generally show you around.
Bahnhofstrasse is the pride of modern Zurich, and counts as the one and only Boulevard of the city. It is famous for being one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping streets in the world. Here you can get anything from diamond rings to chocolate to fur coats. About 140 stores are located along it. A study In 2011 named the Bahnhofstrasse the most expensive commercial rent for retail property in Europe. We'll take you up and down the full length of Bahnhofstrasse on foot and in the tram.
By the way the reason that we can present such a long and comprehensive program about Zürich is that it was filmed during 10 visits to Zürich in recent years.
Zürich’s Hauptbahnhof is the busiest train station in the world as measured by total number of daily trains, but the Hauptbahnhof is more than just a train station – it's like a small town in itself. There are many restaurants and bars and cafes and the lower level has got a vast shopping mall, and it is really popular because these stores are open at night and on Sundays when many of these stores in the city are closed. You'll find a whole variety of shops available here, not just travel items, luggage stores, but clothing stores and sundries, there is the sandwich shops, there is the stationary places, all kinds of ways to spend your money. If you're here towards the end of September you might get lucky and run into the Oktoberfest celebration. These are Swiss, they also like their beer and their lederhosen and their sausages, very similar to Munich in southern Germany in Bavaria. It's Oktoberfest time with some great Swiss beer, there's some music in the air, and a lot of fun. Everybody is very friendly here and the whole station turns into one big party scene.
There are nearly 300 hotels in Zürich so you have a wide range of choice from the cheapest hostel up to a five-star deluxe hotel like the hotels Savoy Bauer en Ville. It's right on Paradeplatz and Bahnhofstrasse – a very refined and expensive place to stay, with prices generally above €500. Perhaps four-star luxury is more suitable for you and definitely less expensive. We enjoyed the St. Gotthard Hotel. It's right on the Bahnhofstrasse just one block from the train station, making access about the best in town.
For visitors who have any interest whatsoever in art, it's worth walking a few blocks to the south edge of the old town to visit Zürich's art museum, the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Behind the train station the country's largest museum occupies a huge neo-Gothic castle built a century ago and houses a grand display of Swiss history illustrating the full length of human culture from the Stone Age up through the 1940s.

Trams in Zürich, part 2 / Zürich villamosai, 2. rész (2008)

Please click on Show more and then scroll down for the english description!
---------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
Highlights:

0:01- Double-articulated trolley buses at Central and Kunsthaus
0:36- Trams in the quite steep Rämistrasse
1:10- A ride with a Forchbahn train - which is a vicinal line utilising tram tracks in the city. Note that it slips some of the tram stops. A fast and smooth ride in some nice winding streets. If you're bored with this, fast-forward to 4:06!
2:24- We pass the tram museum at Burgwies, with some heritage trams standing on its apron
2:56- Still Forchbahn, but a different type of vehicle, and in the other direction :)
4:06- Siemens S-Bahn EMU leaving Bahnhof Tiefenbrunnen
4:26- Bahnhofstrasse/Usteristrasse, an intermediate reversing loop for route 6
4:38- More Bahnhofstrasse - a really nice shopping street with trams - this is how a city center should look like :)
4:51- A ride with heritage tram number 321 (nick-named Elephant). The loud noise was the heating, if memory serves...
5:42- Passing by Bellevue on a by-pass track around the junction. Note the other heritage tram!
5:57- Number 321 with trailer number 687 leaving the stop at the tram museum
6:04- The wonderful Swiss standard tramcar number 1530. Hard to believe, that this car was designed at the very end of the 1930s!
6:13- Riding in the trailer towed by number 1530 (failed to write down its number)
6:21- Riding number 1530.
7:08- A CobraTram with a flattened tyre (Polygonbildung oder Flachstelle?)... It was unbelievably uncomfortable!
7:40- Trams on the Limmatquai - at 8:00 we see one of the heritage sets again
8:20- Weinbergstrasse with a Tram 2000 retrofitted with a low-floor middle part (Sänfte), and then with a normal one
9:10- Mirage double-set turning from Central to Weinbergstrasse - with those whale noises again :)
10:27- a Tram2000 with all-over advertising, still in Weinbergstrasse
10:53- One of the Glattalbahn CobraTrams - this was yet before the first Glattalbahn line was opened
11:25- The sharp (and steep) bend at Weinbergstrasse/Leonhardstrasse
11:58- Late evening on the Bahnhofbrücke: first Tram2000s with cab-less second units (Blinde Kuh)
12:50- ... then a Tram2000 with a cab-less four-axle second unit (Pony)
13:50- end sequence for this part ;)

Zürich[a] or Zurich (/ˈzjʊərɪk/ ZEWR-ik) is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zürich. It is located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich. The municipality has approximately 400,028 inhabitants, the urban agglomeration 1.315 million and the Zürich metropolitan area 1.83 million.Zürich is a hub for railways, roads, and air traffic. Both Zürich Airport and railway station are the largest and busiest in the country.

Permanently settled for over 2000 years, Zürich was founded by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. However, early settlements have been found dating back more than 6400 years ago.During the Middle Ages, Zürich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a primary centre of the Protestant Reformation in Europe under the leadership of Huldrych Zwingli.

The official language of Zürich is German,[b] but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.

Many museums and art galleries can be found in the city, including the Swiss National Museum and the Kunsthaus. Schauspielhaus Zürich is one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking world.

Zürich is a leading global city and among the world's largest financial centres despite having a relatively small population. The city is home to a large number of financial institutions and banking companies. Most of Switzerland's research and development centres are concentrated in Zürich and the low tax rates attract overseas companies to set up their headquarters there.

Monocle's 2012 Quality of Life Survey ranked Zürich first on a list of the top 25 cities in the world to make a base within.According to several surveys from 2006 to 2008, Zürich was named the city with the best quality of life in the world as well as the wealthiest city in Europe in terms of GDP per capita. The Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Ranking sees Zürich rank among the top ten most liveable cities in the world.
