Zabbaleen: Trash Town. A whole community in Egypt that lives on rubbish

The Zabaleen: Cairo's Garbage Collectors (Part 1)

An unseen army of 50,000 Coptic Christians collects Cairo's trash at 2AM and take it home to Garbage City.

• Why are only Christians recycling Cairo’s garbage – in a country that is 90% Muslim?
• Why do you want to avoid hospital waste at all costs – especially in Egypt?
• What can you learn about a city from its garbage?

The Zabaleen have created one of the most efficient recycling systems in the world. They re-use 85% of Cairo's waste from over 12 million people.

Until recently Garbage City – their home – had no water, sewage, or electricity.
The men collect, the women sort, and the children start helping as soon as they can walk.
Everything they need to live is found in the garbage - from toys to food for their livestock.
The garbage gets separated into hundreds of categories – from forks to dolls.

They’ve weathered many crises – during the swine flu epidemic the government ordered every pig in Egypt to be slaughtered. The Garbage People almost starved. Waste piled up on Cairo’s streets.

The Zabaleen: Cairo's Garbage Collectors (Part 2)

Garbage City - Cairo's dark and dirty underbelly. It's home to 50,000 Coptic Christians that make their living recycling the city's garbage. Why only Christians? Because they feed the organic waste to their pigs – and Muslims won’t touch pork.

You can learn a lot about a city from its trash. In Garbage City, they don’t just sort by garbage type, but also by brand. Among plastic bottle collectors, there’s an “American” pile.

• What one piece of garbage is sought by almost every collector?
• Cairo recycles over 85% of its garbage – more than any other city in the world. how did the Garbage People create such an efficient recycling system?
• Why was the swine flu so devastating to Cairo’s Garbage People – even though no pig ever tested positive in Egypt?

The Garbage People don’t just collect garbage – they remanufacture plastic forks into chairs and cans into shiny metal sheets.

But there is always one catastrophe away from starvation. First it was swine flu. Then the Egyptian government sold the garbage collection contract to foreign corporations. Lately China has stopped accepting recycled plastic.
When the Garbage People don’t work, Cairo’s streets overflow with waste.
But there is hope – and community. The Garbage People send their children to school, and dream of getting them out of garbage city. They've created a community with shops and cafes - they even have a mayor (unofficial). And they built themselves the world’s largest Coptic Christian Church – drilled out of a cave in the mountainside. More than anything, they are a strong community with deep family ties.
Many of Garbage City's residents would live there even if they didn't make their living off of trash.

Threatened in Egypt's Christian Hood! ????????

I visited Mansheya Nasir, also known as garbage city, one of the only Christian neighbourhoods in all of Egypt. Most people were very welcoming, some not so much...

I tried to be an investigative journalist and discover what garbage city (Mansheya Nasir) is all about. Garbage city is a neighbourhood in Cairo, Egypt responsible for the waste management of the whole city! I didn't get to learn to much about the process, but don't stress! Next video I post I get shown around by a local who tells me all about garbage city. The reason why I didn't get a chance to learn much about this interesting place is because very few people here speak English. ALSO some dude got very mad at me and threatened me with a sharp piece of metal. So at that point i was pretty bummed and really didn't care much about the garbage any more. There was a cool church in a cave that I went to see but besides that, all I mostly saw was garbage... lots and lots of garbage. What a crazy place!

Mobbed by Children in GARBAGE CITY | Egypt |

Mansheya Nasir, also known as Garbage City, is a slum settlement of around 60,000 on the outskirts of Cairo, home to mostly Coptic Christians. Many of the residents here work as unofficial garbage collectors throughout the city, collecting garbage and transporting it via donkey carts or trucks for a small fee and then sorting it for recyclable materials once home. Join me and Kata as we walk from the center of downtown Cairo to Garbage City, meeting a large group of children along the way.

Hopelessly Lost in Garbage City

I'm not going to lie. This video isn't as thrilling as Hopelessly Lost in a Nubian Village. We weren't even lost in Garbage City. It just felt like we were.

Garbage City is a neighborhood in Cairo built, literally and figuratively, on garbage. The people who live there are called the Zabbaleen which means Garbage People in Egyptian Arabic. The Zabbaleen have served informally as Cairo's trash collectors for decades, living amongst the trash they recycle to make a living.

Many of the Zabbaleen are Coptic Christians. In this video, you'll see an enormous church they've built inside a cave on the edge of Garbage City. With seating for 15,000 to 20,000, it's the largest church in the Middle East.

You will also see a goat.

The Friendly People of Garbage City

One of the friendlier places we visited while in Cairo. Garbage city's economy revolves around garbage and recycling

City of Trash in Cairo: EGYPT.

Здесь можно увидеть церковь в пещере;
Многоэтажные дома, где на крышах живёт домашняя птица и скот, а в подвалах (или на первых этажах) люди сортируют мусор;
Женщин без закрытой одежды;
Тату салон, где копты делают себе татуировки (опозновательный знак: свой/чужой);

埃及A開羅市容/貧民區購物/垃圾場及過夜火車往亞斯旺(粵語現場解述)2002 Zabbaleen: Trash Town in Cairo Egypt-people living on rubbish

Garbage City - Cairo, Egypt

Garbage City - Cairo, Egypt. Taken in Nov 2010.

Many Coptic Christians populate this area in Cario - they collect the city's trash and sort out the recyclables to sell and make a living. The bags are in the streets, in the buildings, on the roofs, and balconies. A very different way of life most of us Americans could never imagine.

I wish these people, all the people of Cairo and Egypt, only the best in the days, weeks, and years to come. Go Egypt! Woo!!

How This Town Produces No Trash

In 2003, the local government in Kamikatsu, Japan decided to require that all residents comply with a new, rigorous recycling program - perhaps the most rigorous in the world.

Since then, the town composts, recycles, or reuses 80% of its garbage. It may not technically be 100% zero waste, as the remaining 20% goes into the landfill, but it's a remarkable achievement for an entire community, in such a short amount of time. The impacts have been positive - cutting costs for the community drastically, as well as improving the conditions of the lush and beautiful environment that surrounds the town in Southeast Japan.

Residents must wash and sort virtually anything that is non-compostable in their household before bringing it to the recycling sorting center. Shampoo bottles, caps, cans, razors, styrofoam meat trays, water bottles...the list goes on and on (literally) into 34 categories. At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer.

All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors.

And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items.

At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea, says resident, Hatsue Katayama. If you get used to it, it becomes normal.

Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste.
