While many tourists rarely leave the beach or the poolside, there are no end of things to do in The Gambia, even on a tight budget. The Gambia in West Africa is a fascinating place, and with no rain between November to the middle of June virtually guaranteed, and temperatures in the 30s, it is a fantastic winter sun destination. The coast has many lovely, long sandy beaches which are never over-crowded, even in the height of the season. And you’ll find it much cheaper than many other popular winter sun locations such as the Caribbean.

Take a bath in Sanyang Beach

The Gambia is the official name of the smallest West African country. Yes, there is the need to put a definite article ‘The’ in front of Gambia.
Gambia – referred to as the smiling coast of Africa – shares that ‘pleasure’ with ‘The Bahamas.’ An English language expert, David Crystal explained why ‘The Gambia’ is ‘The Gambia.’
In an interview with the BBC, Crystal disclosed that two reasons came to play in arriving at that official position.
The Portuguese who first explored the country named it after the river known as ‘The River Gambia.’ The Portuguese thus named it ‘The Gambia.’ [In Portuguese A Gâmbia] So when Britain took over, they maintained that name.
A year to the attainment of independence in 1964, the then Prime Minister officially sought the consent of the Permanent Committee on geographical names based in the UK to keep the official title of ‘The Gambia.’
The reason was because of Zambia, The Gambia didn’t want to be confused with their Southern African brothers, Zambia seeing that only the first alphabets in their names are different.
The Commission which looks after naming of geographical locations in the world accented to the request.

My first days in The Gambia: West Africa's Smiling Coast ????????
I visited Mainland Africa's smallest country, a West African nation known as The Smiling Coast with land borders entirely surrounded by Senegal. Popular with tourists for its beautiful beaches and friendly populace, I spent a week in the company of a friend who showed me things more interesting than the hotel resorts most visitors stick to which included Ghana Town and his family's impressive building projects such as an awe-inspiring mansion and luxurious apartment blocks!
Hope you enjoy part 1 of my Gambia adventure. Next up: I will explore the famous Serrekunda and wander through the black markets as well hunting for souvenirs to take home with me.

TUI Trip Report from London-Gatwick to Gran Canaria, in the Canary islands onboard on Boeing 737 operated by TUI UK (equipped with the new scimitar winglets!).
I wanted so much to fly again with TUI UK. Since my first flight on the Boeing 757, a few months ago, I've been looking forward to a flight like this one. Finally, I was able to book a flight to Gran Canaria with TUI.
Since you reach the TUI check-in counter you already feel that you are on holidays. Then, all the boarding process, the service on board, how the PA messages are said... It truly is an amazing way to start your holiday's trip.
