The Oldest Skyscraper City | Shibam, Yemen

The Oldest Skyscraper City | Shibam, Yemen
The desert of Yemen, Wadi Hadramout is an ancient walled city Shibam, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1982. It is called the Manhattan of the Desert because of its skyscrapers. Land surrounded by a mud wall, the city of the XVI century is one of the oldest examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction. The ancient city of Shibam, built 400 years ago, was a thriving commercial center. Shibam several times, became the capital of the kingdom of Hadramaut. City famous for its incomparable with anything comparable architecture - all the houses are built in Shibam of adobe bricks. About 500 homes are called high-rises, as they have 5-11 floors, each floor was a single family dwelling. This type of structure were designed to protect residents from Bedouin raids. While Shibam has existed for about 2,500 years, most urban homes were built in the XVI century. Many of them repeatedly rebuilt in later centuries. In Shibam are the highest buildings in the world of clay, some of which rise to 30 meters or more.
These high-rise buildings is a product of the traditional family system. According to local tradition, the family, as the po-hundred, as a rule, does not divide built premises, and expands the up your living space thanks to the original roof. So, from generation to generation, gradually formed a high dwelling. Each of the 500 such houses in Shibam has from 5 to 8 floors, which are home to 7,000 people, that is, on average, every building is designed for more than 100 people. Ground floor is given to animals; the second floor is keep-lischem; third - accommodations. Usually on the third floor room host, fourth and fifth floors are rooms for women and children, on the sixth floor is a common room. In each room is not much space, first and second floors, mostly devoid of windows.
Building materials — In the city of Shibam all objects, including fences, houses, mosques and even schools are built of adobe bricks (they are made of clay, straw and water, dried in the sun for three days and ready for use in construction). Such dwellings may persist for centuries and are a marvel of architecture. This is explained by negligible rainfall in this region, at best, can be a bit pomorosit. Every year the residents of Shibam and paint the exterior walls are whitewashed, and this is sufficient to prevent water erosion. Shibam is built from environmentally friendly materials and blending in perfectly with the environment.
Shibam is 160 km long and 2 km wide, and is a dry valley. Here rainfall, torrential rains and floods are rare. However, in 1298 and in 1532 was twice destroyed Shibam floods. Today's buildings are constructed of Shibam, mainly 400 years ago.

Israel's Most Impressive Roman Ruin

Caesarea is the largest Roman ruin in Israel today. It has many impressive monuments, but the most fascinating one is an artificial harbor that's submerged underwater today. This harbor and city were built by Herod The Great, an ambitious puppet of the Romans, who was appointed as king of Judea by Rome. in order to create for himself an international city with direct links to Rome, he built this city and the harbor from scratch, using engineering techniques which I explain in the video.

Herod also built other impressive monuments in Judea, including Masada, The Cave Of The Patriarchs, and he upgraded The Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

This virtual tour and documentary explores the ancient history and archaeology of this fascinating place, from its founding by Herod, its use as a Roman provincial capital, the harbor's role in the war between the Romans and the Jews, the spread of Christianity out of this port, and the harbor's demise by a natural disaster that happened hundreds of kilometers away.

Dar Al Hajar, Wadi Dhahr Valley, Yemen.
Dar al-Hajar, the Imam’s Rock Palace is perched on top of a rock pinnacle,
15 km away from the capital city of Sana.
It is typical of Yemeni architecture, seeming to grow out of the rocks on which it is constructed,
and with characteristic Yemeni painting of its windows and building edges.
The palace was built in the 1930s by Imam Yahya as his summer residence.
The palace has been restored for visitors and turned into a museum

Dar Al-Hajar (Rock Palace) - دار الحجر

The Imam Yahya Palace.

Dar Al Hajar is a palace built in 3000 BC

The Dar Al-Hajar, as the Yemenis call it, was built on a mountain rock about 35 meters above the surface of the earth, on the ruins of an ancient Sabaean palace that was known as The Sedan fort, which was built by the Himyarites in 3000 BC, according to Yemeni historical references. The fort was destroyed by the Turks 400 years ago, and it was restored at the beginning of the twentieth century

Seera Fortress Aden Yemen

Sira Fortress/Castle (قلعة صيرة) is a military site in Aden, Yemen. The original fortress dates to the 11th century, and is still in use today by the Yemeni military. The fort is located on Sira Island, a rocky and tall volcanic outcropping which dominates the old harbor of Aden. Although it is referred to as a castle quite often, it is less of a castle and more of a fortification. Much of the fort's history is unknown, especially since there have been few archaeological studies done of the area. One theory is that construction was initiated around the year 1173 by a Turkish ruler of Aden named Prince Othman Al-Zangabili Al-Takriti. The fortress was proven during subsequent attacks against Aden by the Portuguese and especially the Turks in 1517. Although the ancient harbor began to silt up and the primary commercial center eventually moved to the other side of the Aden Peninsula, the British continued to develop and garrison the fortress after their arrival in 1839. It is about a 15 minute walk up the stairs and can be considered a bit steep. It is one of the most common tourist attractions in the city of Aden.

YEMEN, KNIVES' DANCE IN DAR AL HAJAR PALACE

Despina dances the Knives' Dance with Yemen people in the Dar Al Hajar Palace

Visiting the impressive stone palace of Yemen.

Dar al-Hajar stone palace is unique and impressive architecture of Yemen.

Located on the top of the famous stone in Wadi Dhahr valley, it is about 15km from Sana capital, Yemen. Dar al-Hajar is known as the stone palace of Imam. This is a symbol of Yemen. You can see its images on different products in Yemen from postcards, magazines to bills and water bottles.

What makes this works so attractive? The possible answer is because it is a model of Yemen architecture. The palace is decorated with window frames and the wall is carved meticulously. The palace is more prominent when it stands alone in quiet and green oasis where there only has water in rainy season.

Yemen does not have any King or President. Instead, the country's leadership belongs to Imam (the leader of Isam). After his death in 1904, Yahya Muhammad Hamiddin (1869-1948) became Imam of Zaydis (a sect of Isam). After that he became the Imam of Yemen in 1918 until he was assassinated in 1948. The palace was built in 1930 by Imam Yahya. It was used as the place to stay in the summer. This palace was recovered for tourism purpose and it became a museum.

Since ancient times Yemen has enchanted travelers, merchants, philosophers and kings with its secrets and its wealth. At the crossroads of spice and incense routes, Yemen is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world that has not yet been touched by the winds of modernity. This fascinating country stretching from the shores of the Red Sea to beyond the shores of the Arabian Sea is extraordinarily rich in historical sites.

The ancient sites are refreshingly free of commercial ventures with an atmosphere of uncluttered authenticity no longer present at better-trodden historical locations. One of the most striking features of Yemen is its astonishing architecture. The country is covered in ancient skyscrapers made from stone and mud - where people live on top of their animals.

Every visitor is fascinated with the variety and contrasts in landscape, architecture and people: From gigantic mountains with fortress-like villages on the top of the peaks to picturesque urban settlements with houses of clay, bricks and stone; from deserts to fertile valleys; from dreamlike beaches to colorful markets filled with the sounds, fragrances and faces from 1001 Nights, you will meet the old wisdom and the art of the Land of the Queen of Sheba everywhere.

A trip to Yemen is considered an experience of a way of life long since lost to the modern world, a dream destination of unusual record, a destination of a different age.
