Yellowstone National Park is a national park in the United States. It was founded on March 1, 1872, making it the oldest national park in the world. Most of it is located in the state of Wyoming and is the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. It is named after the largest river in the park, the Yellowstone River.
The park is best known for its geothermal springs like geysers and mud pots, as well as for its wildlife like bison, grizzly bears and wolves. In 1978 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.
World famous is the Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest thermal spring on earth. However, that alone does not make it one of the top highlights of Yellowstone. Rather, it is the bright color of the source that is responsible for this. While the middle of the Grand Prismatic Spring is deep blue, the edges shimmer in green, yellow and orange. Various microorganisms that live in the mineral-rich spring are responsible for this play of colors.
The park is famous for its volcanic landscape with geysers, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs. 62 percent of all hot springs existing worldwide are in the Yellowstone area, around 10,000 including 300 geysers, so Yellowstone National Park has the highest density of geysers. Of the more than 300 geysers in the national park, the Old Faithful geyser in the upper geyser basin is particularly popular with tourists, because it spits out its water at unusual intervals of around 60 to 90 minutes. With the Steamboat Geyser, the park is also home to the largest active hot water geyser in the world. It is located in the Norris Geyser Basin.
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone offers a panorama that can only be described as breathtaking. The gorge, which is up to 400 meters deep and 1,300 meters wide, extends over a length of 32 kilometers. Steep cliffs, lush forest and three spectacular waterfalls make the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone an absolute highlight of the national park.
Annually over 3 million tourists visit Yellowstone National Park. The largest number of visitors to date was reached in 2016 with over 4.25 million people.
Around 80 percent of the park area is covered by coniferous forest, which is particularly prevalent within the caldera. Non-forested areas are a sagebrush steppe, especially in the northern area of the park. The park is a retreat for animal species that have become rare, for example bison and pronghorn.

Enjoy this 2.5 hour road trip through the breathtaking landscapes of Montana, as we embark on a scenic drive from Bozeman to Yellowstone National Park. This journey promises a visual feast of majestic mountains, winding rivers, and the untamed beauty of the American West.
Starting our adventure in Bozeman, known for its vibrant culture and outdoor recreation, we'll set the stage for an incredible road trip. As we leave the town behind, the vast expanse of Montana's big sky country unfolds before us, with the Bridger Mountains to the northeast and the Gallatin Range to the south.
Our first destination is Paradise Valley, a name that perfectly captures the essence of this stunning region. The drive takes us along the Yellowstone River, with its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding peaks. Lush green meadows, dotted with wildflowers, stretch out on either side of the road, creating a picture-perfect scene.
Moving onward, our journey leads us to Livingston, a charming town nestled along the banks of the Yellowstone River. Known for its historic architecture and artistic community, Livingston is a perfect pit stop. Explore the vibrant downtown area, grab a cup of coffee from a local cafe, and soak in the friendly atmosphere.
The town's railroad history is evident in the beautifully preserved Livingston Depot, a must-see for history buffs. Take a stroll along the Yellowstone River Trail for stunning views of the river and the Absaroka Mountains.
We then venture south towards Yellowstone National Park. The landscape becomes more rugged, with the Absaroka Mountains towering on the eastern side of the road. The iconic Roosevelt Arch marks the entrance to the park, and as you pass through, you'll feel the spirit of exploration and wonder that Yellowstone is known for.
Arriving at Mammoth Hot Springs, the geothermal features of Yellowstone take center state. The terraces of travertine formations, created by the flow of hot water over thousands of years, create a surreal and otherworldly landscape. The vibrant colors of the thermophiles add a unique touch to the scenery.
As the day draws to a close, the setting sun casts a warm glow over the landscape, creating a magical atmosphere. The geysers and hot springs take on a different character in the soft light, making for a spectacular end to our journey through Yellowstone.

Yellowstone National Park in the USA is probably the most famous nature reserve in the world. And it is famous primarily for its thermal springs and geysers. There are about 3,000 of them in the park, which is approximately 2/3 of all geysers on the planet. Every year, several million tourists come to see the ebullient life of geysers and enjoy completely unreal views of bright blue geyser lakes, framed by rainbow calcite strata.
But Yellowstone is not only geysers, but also amazingly beautiful landscapes: wooded mountains, transparent lakes and fast rivers. There are more than 290 waterfalls in the park, the largest of which falls from a height of almost 100 meters. The park also has its own canyons, which are as picturesque as the Grand Canyon. In the park you can see grizzly bears, baribal bears, wolves, elk, deer, pumas and of course American bison.

Each offer vastly different geothermal features and landscapes that you won't want to miss.

Yellowstone National Park is an American national park located in the western United States, largely in the northwest corner of Wyoming and extending into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world. The park is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially the Old Faithful geyser, one of its most popular. While it represents many types of biomes, the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.
While Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years, aside from visits by mountain men during the early-to-mid-19th century, organized exploration did not begin until the late 1860s. Management and control of the park originally fell under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of the Interior, the first Secretary of the Interior to supervise the park being Columbus Delano. However, the U.S. Army was eventually commissioned to oversee the management of Yellowstone for a 30-year period between 1886 and 1916. In 1917, the administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service, which had been created the previous year. Hundreds of structures have been built and are protected for their architectural and historical significance, and researchers have examined more than a thousand archaeological sites.
Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 sq mi (8,983 km2), comprising lakes, canyons, rivers, and mountain ranges. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered a dormant volcano. It has erupted with tremendous force several times in the last two million years. Well over half of the world's geysers and hydrothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism. Lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. The park is the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest remaining nearly-intact ecosystem in the Earth's northern temperate zone. In 1978, Yellowstone was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians have been documented, including several that are either endangered or threatened. The vast forests and grasslands also include unique species of plants. Yellowstone Park is the largest and most famous megafauna location in the contiguous United States. Grizzly bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk live in this park. The Yellowstone Park bison herd is the oldest and largest public bison herd in the United States. Forest fires occur in the park each year; in the large forest fires of 1988, nearly one-third of the park was burnt. Yellowstone has numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, boating, fishing, and sightseeing. Paved roads provide close access to the major geothermal areas as well as some of the lakes and waterfalls. During the winter, visitors often access the park by way of guided tours that use either snow coaches or snowmobiles.
The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world, after Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand and Boiling Lake in Dominica. It is located in the Midway Geyser Basin.
Grand Prismatic Spring was noted by geologists working in the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, and named by them for its striking coloration. Its colors match most of those seen in the rainbow dispersion of white light by an optical prism: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.
The bright, vivid colors in the spring are the result of microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The mats produce colors ranging from green to red; the amount of color in the microbial mats depends on the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids and on the temperature gradient in the runoff. In the summer, the mats tend to be orange and red, whereas in the winter the mats are usually dark green. The center of the pool is sterile due to extreme heat.
